Google down? Google hacked/not hacked!
Not normally something we'd cover, but damn, is Google down? Is such a thing even possible? Anyone know what's going on?
UPDATE: They're back! Seriously, anyone have any idea what happened?
UPDATE 2: GigaOm has a screengrab of a site called SoGoSearch that Google.com was redirecting to for a little while there. Sounds like somebody got themselves hacked!
UPDATE 3: Ok, to be fair, no one knows for sure that Google got hacked, this story is still developing. But hacked or not, something pretty catastrophic must have happened for them to have a system-wide outage like that. Sounds like there may have been some sort of Denial of Service attack, whether that was combined with a redirect of some kind isn't entirely clear. We'll keep you posted.
UPDATE 4: Google is now saying it was a DNS issue. They haven't said what the source of the issue was.

Theo DuBose @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
It's back up now, but it wasn't working earlier. Google DoSed?
nujjy @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Seems to work fine for me. I live in the UK, by the way.
Skylar Givens @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Geeze, yeah. I was just managing my adwords account and all of the sudden it stopped working. I thought my internet got shut off or something. The last thing I would've expected is Google (of all sites) to be down.
Robert @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
And to think... for a few minutes half the world thought they lost their Internet connection (I checked my cable modem!)
DK @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
gmail is still down...
retro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I think all they did was disconnect for a second.
It's back up now.
Dave @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Many other sites are still down, too. Like Domino's. Man, I'm hungry for pizza. =(
Vital @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM

Jim Meyer @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Crazy corrupted DNS.
x2cube @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
this just in: microsoft mole infiltrates google and misconfigures their server files to reject people trying to access google.com
retro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Well, the comment I just sent was not able to be confirmed by me becasue I thought gmail was up.
No gmail. :(
I knew my internet connection was up though, because I had other sites running and my Messenger.
But the weird thing is, the Gmail notifier is detecting new emails, but when I click on it it says : gmail.google.com cannot be found.
Pancake @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Gmail is still down for many people
Outsingia @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Gmail pop mail still works, and if you visit Google.com for the first time (try clearing your cache, cookies, etc), it will forward you to your local google, i.e. Google.com to Google.co.uk.
x2cube @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
My friend who works at google says someone there was actually working for microsoft and they want MSN search to succeed so he messed with google.
Skylar @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM

#22, it always does that for people in Canada. Auto-forwarding from google.com to google.ca, I mean.
Shizzle @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
My adsense ads aren't showing on any of my websites and I can't find the google adsense page. Something strange is happening! Must be some kind of alien invasion ;)

Everything Google went down on me for about 20 minutes, then google.ca came back, but gmail and most other apps are still down at 4:22 pacific time. A little wake-up call for all of us out there leading the march to web-based applications.

It was definitely down for me for at least ten minutes.
Chris @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
it appears that the DNS entries for all of googles sites were broken. However, you could still search using google by going directly to thier IP http://216.239.37.99/
All seems to be well now, for the most part. Certain google pages still dont come up though.
At least I know i didnt break the interent.. this time..
Galt @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I can't access any Google sites (froogle, news, etc) from my PC via eiter Firefox or IE, but I can execute Google searches from my Sidekick (Hiptop) and via my PPC (google.com/xhtml)... Weird.
genghis @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM

Firefox has problems connecting, though Internet Explorer Works? Strange.
nick @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
My friend just asked me if this was a sign of the end times. I'm starting to wonder...
Phil Gross @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Google working fine from here, but no gmail. They may have lost a particular site, or there may be DNS problems (an attack?)
retro @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I think all they did was disconnect for a second.
It's back up now.
Ryan @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM

#28,
?
Were you simulating a Whois?
I didn't really get the joke in the URLs.
Scott @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Google didn't get hacked.... browsers go though all possible combinations when a given address doesn't work so that gets:
www.google.com.net
www.google.com.org
www.google.com.com
etc...
