Game Boy emulator for the PSP
It'll only work if you've got a Japanese PlayStation
Portable running on version 1.00 of the firmware (so don't even waste your time if you have a North American PSP),
but someone managed to get a Game Boy emulator running on Sony's new portable game console. They haven't figured out
how to get the sound part working, but it's probably only a matter of time until they sort that out.

When will they find a way to break trough v1.5 firmware? Or to degrade the PSP...
Anyway this is only a small start.
What i am waiting before getting a PSP is for a PSP emulator in PC.
yamakiyo @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I guess that means I can dump my gameboy sp soon. I was using it mostly to play old NES games.
semi @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
so we can expect megadrive/genesis/SNES emulators?
eg. street fighter II?
m05 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
As far as I know, the 1.5 firmware only reads encoded files, while the 1.0 reads not encoded files, too. So we first need to figure out how the encoding works before we can get stuff running on the 1.5 firmware.
Extinction @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
They need a zoom feature
Tesla @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Gameboy would be great but honestly I would really rather see an SNES emulator. Keep up the good work guys and please don't forget that you need to get through ver 1.5 of the PSP firmware for all us non original Japanese version PSP people.

Ok so you load Wipeout Pure and run this through the web browser....? Oh wait, a real HACK?!
I'm just bitter because I missed the deadline and couldn't submit my "Turn your PSP into an email terminal" hack which involves using the Wipeout browser to access your webmail.
But seriously, it's very cool that someone's working hard to make emulators happen on the PSP. I would buy one like that if there were arcade emulators available.
Cullen @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
yeah, but does it play halo?
Jayson Elliot @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I'm surely stating the obvious here, but the top emulator I'm looking for...
MAME.
Seb @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
D'oh didn't work on my Jap PSP, although I did upgrade the firmware to 1.5 :(
The game could not be started.

a psp emulator on my psp to run psp games is good enough...
lupinstel @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
If you are looking for a handheld game system that runs emulators check out the Gamepark 32 BLU. It runs emulators for practicly all cartridge based video game systems. The Gamepark is a South Korean system which embraces the homebrew community, and everything runs off of cheap smart media cards. Make sure you look at the BLU (Back Light Unit) and if you want to buy one, consider buying it overclocked, or overclock it yourself.
Martin @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Finally, the PSP gets some good games . . . :)
Kaegan @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Wow, it's funny to see how small the original gameboy screen is in comparison. Just goes to show that son of a bitch on the PSP is huge... wowzers.
bazald @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Yeah, it is for stuff like this that I always try to get first generation hardware. It is too bad that I didn't go for the first generation *Japanese* hardware. Oh well...
Hideki @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
#12, I might be wrong, but I think the PSP's higher pixel count and smaller pixel size are shrinking the emulated screen. Kind of like changing the screen area size in Windows. The emulated screen looks like it's only 1 inch in the picture and I think the gameboy was bigger than that.
So it actually goes to show how far screen resolution has come, which is still pretty impressive.
Peter @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Anyone know how to get the Japanese PSP back to 1.00, i upgraded mine to 1.5?
Jim Bob @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
An N64 emulator would kill the DS. It's possible...
WizarDru @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
So, we're taking some of the most advanced hardware on the market and....using to emulate a much older, technologically inferior device. A device, I might add, that already has a commercial emulator available on the market that does the job flawlessly, if you were so inclined. I mean, I guess it's swell that someone managed to do it, but why would you actually bother to use it, other than proof of concept? Just go buy a GBA SP, fer crying out loud.
There are far better things to do with the PSP, like playing Foamy the Squirrel flash animations converted to MPEGs, playing Gorillaz videos released in PSP format...or playing games. I hear it does that last one, too. ;)
Philip Wesley @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
An N64 emulator on the PSP would be plausible.. just barely.. considering the PSP uses an R4000 and the N64 uses an R4300i chip. They're both 64-bit.. so it would be plausible.
Simon @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Wow, a real hack. Way to go ...
#16: Maybe some people like to play some cool, funny games in a while and not carry another device with them. It's not all about megapixel, megaherz and megashiny, there are even some PSP owners who appreciate those old goodies.
dionysus @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
#19 (Simon), yeah totally.
lol "megashiny", so true
Martha Stuart @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
If this goes on in Japan they'll get sued.
blackninja @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
gamecube has better hardware...but i agree ps2 kicks ass!!!
mike @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
and most of us (that aren't moron fanbois) realise sony's got a knack for making sure their systems have kickass games
---
ah i notice you made a point of saying 'Sony makes sure their systems have kickass games' and not 'Sony makes great games'
Are you forgetting, Nintendo makes the best-selling games on the freakin' planet. Mario? Zelda? Metroid? Oh yeah, Pokemon?
The new zelda game comin this Xmas is going to be unbelievable. and amazingly it WIll push hardware sales A LOT.
Furthermore.. PS2 had worse hardware than the Gamecube.. the cube can actually push the most GFLOPS of all three systems, it's just that its discs are so fuckin small, you have to cram games on there.
Jason Anderson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
The day someone releases an NES emulator for the PSP, I will be in heaven. It's all I want. All I need. And would increase my enjoyment of my PSP ten fold.
Manfesto @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I really don't ever get the "PSX won out - N64 failed" or "PS2 won out - XBox failed" or "this won out - this one didn't." To me, it always seems the major systems all do pretty well. I mean, when I think "flop," I think Virtual Boy or N-Gage or that handheld Atari had back in the day. Far as I can tell, the N64 did just fine, and the Gamecube isn't exactly in financial hell or anything.

I can play GameBoy, GameBoy Advance, Genesis, MasterSystem, GameGear, NES, SNES, TurboGrafx games with Morphgear in my Pocket PC. I don't need the PSP to do emulation for me.
Marc @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
For me this just shows why the PSP is so good. Hacking the PSP is becoming one of it's main selling points (at least for me anyway).
Sony should be encouraging this and making it easier with future firmware updates not restricting it.
Jonathan @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Man, thats pretty neat.
Aaron @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
If there was a n64 emulater for PSP, i would buy one instantly.
Ashigaru @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
#30 (Marc) we can only hope they'd let us do it. Like back when they had a game developer for the PSX, that was awesome ^_^ I guess I could do it though, just reset the firmware in my PSP. What damage would rolling back the firmware do to my PSP?
wonders @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
SWEET!!! just seen that there are emulators out there for 1.5 firmware! here's a emu pack with megadrive, snes, MAME, etc....
