Samsung YP-T8: pics and specs

Sometime this month it looks like Samsung will be rolling out their successor to the YP-T7 digital audio player that we caught wind of back in March. The YP-T8 MP3 player (media player, really) is unmistakably phone-like, and it's looking pretty packed with features. It's got a 1.8-inch TFT LCD, FM radio, voice recorder, photo viewer, text viewer, game functionality, plays back MP3, WMA, Ogg, and Audio ASF and as well is going to rock some MPEG4 video action. Battery life clocks in at 20 hours, and its 43.5 x 83 x 15.5mm frame weighs in at 55g. Internal memory sizes will be available in 256MB, 512MB, 1G and 2G versions. Here's another crazy feature on this unit: it's got USB host functionality, so you can connect up your digital camera and download photos to it whilst out and about. We've just drooled all over the floor so we hope they don't break our hearts on the price with this thing — that's the one spec they neglected to mention. More pics after the jump.

regarding price, the thing about samsung daps is that people underestimate them. Generally, that means that retailers price them accordingly.

That's why on the same month that it came out, I got the YPT7Z for approximately 165.

I hope people won't pay much more for the YPT8. Then again, video playback might command a premium.

Samsung wants to win in daps over apple, it should price 2gb YPT8 @ $200 or less. If 2gb @ $300, apple will still dominate. BestBuy has online sale on ALL daps (except ipods), looks like BB clearing shelves for new products. BB salesperson said store's mp3 product display "reset" will occur in June. Will YPT8 2gb be ready by then to hit BB store shelves?

People might thing your YP-T8 as a cellphone. Well. That's because it looks like one. Actually, it's smaller than a cellphone. You might think that it's a waste of money for a 1 gig mp3 for 250, but it's worth it. Normal music video files are 20-30 mega bytes but you use multimedia studio to convert the file in to another file that can be put in to this mp3. When you convert it, the size becomes only 8-10 megabytes. HOW GOOD IS THAT? The screen is small, but the video and photo qualitiy is really nice.

Now the music part.... the screen displays the artist, track and the album. Thats kinda cool. I dunno about the american version, but in the korean version of YP-T8, you can show lyrics on the screen. I THINK that you can do it in the american version too, but im not sure. (you use yepp media studio)

The text reading. Like the mp3 files, you just drag and drop the txt files in to the yepp. You can change the colors of the font, and background in the menu inside YP-T8.

The photo viewing: You also have to convert that too. But pic qualatiy is a so-so.

THE GAMES IN THIS MP3 PLAYERS ARE AMAZING. They use motion sensors to let you play 2 of the games (hurdles and dart). They also have hetris(teteris), and this other game. The games are full color and have mission, quick play, options, etc..... The games are addicting and almost never get bored.These games are better than ipod games. even i the color ipods, the games are boring old and not-exciting. ..

Another thing... $250 for this isnt bad. In korea the 1 gig version of this is like $350... Korea also has a 2 gig version of this which is 400 dollars. Its music cheaper in the US and really nice.

look guys.. I saw many of you said that apple will still dominate if the T8's price doesn't drop near 200 bucks. The thing is that i pod nano doesn't have that many function. I have i pod mini and the fat one..i can't use them anymore cuz the battery is just..XX ㅡㅡ; samsung didn't really make to beat apple with GB and price. And the flash drive that's in ipod nano is all from samsung..so i don't know wth u guys are talking about cuz if samsung wanted to dominate they can just simply not sell the 2gb,4 gb flash drive and make their own mp3 like 7Gb cuz samsung already got 16 GB nand flash drive. These days people like function, design, and PROTECTIOn than GB and cuz look how many function it has.(T8's screen is made to last longer and not to get scratched. whilte nano's screen is just shyt.Also when you buy T8 it includes better earphone than nano + neckless so u can wear it + case +usb HOST cable + usb cable + seperate charger+ samsung has the best A/S in the world + USB speed is 2.0 while nano doesn't include anything like those up there and None of those stuff like movies, Radio, and most important out of all DNSE < this is the best sound tech. samsung came up with..i don't know why no one mentions that. It is better than SRS WOw which was the lead. DNSE is equal to listening in 6.1 channel speaker.) And let me tell you guys something. If you want to watch movies in that T8 thing..you can download a software from Samsung website which will make 700mb movies to 170 mb with same clarity and frame per sec. So if you Americans don't know about it..find out and ask.

Yea the YP-T8 is pretty cool. I especially love the games w/ the motion sensor thing. Umm can somebody help me with transfering the video files into the mp3. I pressed the convert button in the multimedia studio but it doesn't work. Is there any programs i need installed in my computer in order to do this?

Hi I baught this little goodie in hong kong a few weeks ago. Love the sound quality and the functionality. The navigation could be better though. But it's managable. To bad they didn't use the motion sensors to navigate. That would be cool.

About the conversion, i have used their tool to convert most types of video. As long as I have the codec for viewing it was able to re code it into it's own container format. I even got the sub text that I use VobSub to display on that thing. Don't know how but it works.

Note, use the export button and then convert to export and convert to the device. Works every time for me.

i must be a fool becuz i bought my YP-T8 from someone and i have all the cords but i don't have the program to put anything onto it. Can someone help me out??!! :-

datak, Go to Samsung's website to download the software associated with the player. Or just drag and drop mp3s using windows explorer.

Has anyone used this device with any of the mp3 subscription services, like Napster to go? Microsoft's "Play for sure" says it's subscription compatible, but I can't get it to work.
