Indian man sends 182,689 SMS messages in one month
File this under asinine and absurd along with the
cellphone throwing contest: Deepak Sharma went on record
with the Guinness Book for having sent the most SMS messages in a single month: 182,689. We're not sure if that's
total, or unique messages, but if you'd like us to break that down for you, that's about 6,100 messages a day, 253 an
hour, 4.2 a minute, or a new one every 14 seconds or so. So basically this guy gave up a month of his life sending
texts—way to go, dude. His other reward? A 1,411 page bill (don't worry, he has an unlimited texting plan)—compare that
to, say, Joyce's Ulysses (speaking of Guinness books… aw come on!), which is a mere 780 some-odd pages, though every
bit as difficult to read through.

He probably was just putting a unique character and sent it.. i dont believe he had written long texts. and sent it
pimp @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
who were the recipients?
matt @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
how do you know he didnt use some type of script to automate the messages?
Pookie Ray Ray Johnson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
This dude is waisting precious trees, precious ink, precious manpower just to have his name in the freakin Guiness. I need to go whip his asp!
Side Step @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
He probably didn't send each message one-by-one. I'm sure he just sent mass text messages to many people at once. Hell, my phone lets me send a single message to 20 people at one time.
iPodTodd @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
So he's the bastard that's been spaming me!
DM @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Im from India, and I know a guy here who sent 1200 smses in a day, and his cell phone provider blocked his sms services for "spamming".
So Im wondering what cell phone service does this dude have that lets him go on sending messages like this without getting blocked?
Trejkaz @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Seems like he'd be easily beaten by a two line script. ;-)
simran singh @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
#6-It never said anything about him being in India. I'm Indian, and I'm in Dallas, Texas, lol. Not important anyway, but whatever.
I think that this is a big waste of time. There's no point, except the fact of being able to go into the Guinness (sp?) Book and being able to show off your name.
jfb3 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
#11,
Actually TFA ~does~ say the man is India.
Title of article:
"A Ludhiana guy sends 1,82,689 SMS in one month:-"
see: http://www.mapsofindia.com/maps/punjab/ludhiana.htm
Parker @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Bet it would be easy to beat him if somebody tried it in morse code.
appleEmployee @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
#12 is right ... Plus #11 have u heard abt AirTel ... the largest indian cell company ... ? Actually he must have just forwarded every stupid textjoke to all the people in his address book !
And the other thing to note is that incoming sms is free india ... so ppl would not really mind
LTM @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Damn, I was so close. I had 182,688 text messages last month. Oh well, there's always next month! :-)
Finishing.Law.School @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
this guy should be beaten for this not rewarded
Jasmine @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
This wouldn't be the life I would like to live!
Mike @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Why do you want to beat this guy? How is this worse than all the other stuff people did to get into the guiness book?
ojor @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
for sure it is using auto script program. How do you keep sending sms without sleeping. :):)
bob @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
I know there are some website to send SMS.
he probably invented some program to flood everyone with sms.
DM @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
#14, appleEmployee, Ya Ive heard of AirTel - I have an Airtel connection, and so does that crazy 1200 sms per day dude. But he was apparently blocked cause he had one of the highest sms/day in Delhi!
Anyway back to topic - Im sure this person used some sort of Script / SMS Distribution list (which btw, is already there in many modern phones). And sending one sms takes about 14 seconds anyway, if you also count the delivery report!
sam @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
so what's his address so I can text him?
Paperless @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Here incoming SMS are free too
I think only in the USA where peo__ple are robbed by every company you pay incoming...
Europe my precious.
lav @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Incoming SMS is free in America too, tardicus.
Peter @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Incoming SMS are NOT free in the US. Not on my Cingular and not on my previous T-Mobile phones. You either pay by the SMS or buy 300 or 500 or whatever SMS plan you want. Currently Cingular charges me 10cents per SMS sent or received and 25cents for sent or received international messages. If I used the service enough I would have bought a plan but I don't so I have to pay 25cents every time a friend of mine from abroad decides to sent me the latest SMS joke.
Andy Garcia @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
I have unlimited texting with Sprint PCS and I send around 4500 text messages per month. I'm in class all day, at work all afternoon, and doing homework all night. Its not like i camp out on the phone. But its just much easier for me to carry on conversations with text messages rather than talking. With text messaging I can carry on conversations with multiple people, where with voice I am dedicated to the one conversation. I do carry another phone to talk on if someone does happen to call.
How many text messages does everyone else send?
Greg @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
"Incoming SMS msgs are not free in the US" ?!?!? Well that all depends on your cell provider, now doesn't it? I have Cingular, and have to pay the ten cents for every outgoing message, but get unlimited incoming messages for free. Of course, I was one of the AT&T people who got moved over to Cingular recently -- so I'm sure it's just a case of Cingular having (or wanting) to make sure they don't piss off the millions of former at&t customers by honoring our original plans...

Wow, the previous two comments (#30 & #31) are purely commercial...for some garbage SMS service's webpage that only work s in INDIA -- and isn't free like they claim here either...
Amazing, people are talking about SMS service and pricing on *CELL PHONES* in the *USA*, and some stinky smellin' raghead thinks that this is the perfect place to spam everyone about his scam that has NOTHING to do with *CELL PHONES* nor the *USA*...
Bah.
Pookie Ray Ray Johnson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Still punching in a unique characted nearly 183k times is insane. What kinda job did this schmuck have?
Raffy @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
What I'd like to know is, when you've got only 14 seconds to send out a text message to make that record, what sort of substance did his messages contain, if any at all?
This sort of record is just plain dumb. I'd find it much more interesting to hear about a record for, say, the Most Number of Text Messages Sent That Actually Meant Something (phrased in proper Guiness-speak, of course). Instead we have to read about a guy who wasted an entire month plugging away on his mobile for a silly commendation.
bhix @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
Why didn't they arrest him for spamming?
Riyaz @ Dec 19th 2005 12:53AM
He probably used PC software to do this... that would make it quiet easy... there are programs for sending sms automatic (timed) which could also have been used.
goosegooseape @ Nov 19th 2007 12:54PM
So I've definitely texted more than this a month. Not using quick texts or sending random stuff. I haven't gotten the official text count yet but when I last checked I had 20,049.
Just wait I'm sure there will be a Guiness Book Of World Records record for it soon. If there isn't already. I couldn't find it though.
