Sony PlayStation 3 for 2005?
Sony's obviously feeling the pinch from all the Xbox 360 buzz going on right now, since apparently their CFO Takao Yuhara was quoted as stating (in so many words) that Sony was considering a 2005 launch for the PS3: "For the year end sales season, simultaneously building up both the PlayStation Portable system in America and Europe as well as the next generation PlayStation is one option that we have." We're not sure what kinds of stops they'd have to pull out to make this happen, but we'd assume it'd be, um, all of them. We'll let you know more next week at the unveiling though, yeah?

Hope it gets out soon.....
the PS3 will be the console to end all consoles (till ps4)
Sure, just put out the speculation so that people will hold off on buying the XBox 360. Sounds like the move Nintendo pulled with the N64 back in the day. Of course, it will probably WORK with Sony. :-)
lol, yea, bad idea.
Here is the PS3, please wait +6months for a game
Assuming that it's actually ready, Microsoft will be reeling from this news. A weaker console and a face to face showdown with Sony. They'd be better to launch behind Sony again than launch within the same time period.
Is the PS3 going to have anything up on the Xbox360? I don't think my TV will come close to taking advantage of the Xbox's display potential, so better graphics probably won't matter. I don't really like the Playstation controller (assuming they use the same old design). I don't care about blu-ray disks. Is the PS3 supposed to have any media capabilities to compete with the Xbox?
I'm just trying to figure out if there is any point in me waiting till the PS3 comes out to get a console.
Ya my biggest beef with sony has always been the controller, something about where the left joystick is, not to mention no triggers...also the reason xbox did it more for me is that i'm a shooter person. anyone can admit sony sucked in terms of F.P.S, but with a new generation comes a second chance, i'm all open ears and peeled eyes to see what sony has to offer, long live competition
Ok, so it's the "oh we got it to..." trick I know you ps fanboys think this is the end of x-box but sales figures as well as a company that doesn't know how to lose would say otherwise. Take this to the bank, The X-Box 260 will come out first, and force a premature ps3 launch that will be like a rain cloud over the system. Keeping the market very even for longer than you think. Game titles will be the breaks.
Sony's probably bluffing. Sony simply can't afford to bring the PS3 out for this Christmas without breaking some of their promises, most notably the inclusion of a Blu-Ray drive.
The Playstation group (SCE) is one divsion that's actually profitable within Sony (except for the PSP). Sony also has a significant chunk of debt. They literally can't afford it. Coming out early only plays to Microsoft's hands since the PS3 will have to be weaker to make a Christmas 2005 launch.
Hah Sony is going to do it again. Create a hype for a system that has the possibility to kick ass, and then rush the end result, create a lackluster product, and cling onto the false hype for hopes of sales.
I think if they planned a mid-2006 release before, they should stick to it. The only thing they can do is push it even further into 2006, otherwise it is just going to be a rushed product.
Blu-ray and Hd-dvd have still have to work out their differences, so Sony isn't really sure what drive the thing will have...much less what that drive will cost them to manufacture.
After my PS2s disc read problems and my PSP having a shitty screen, I'm passing on the PS3.
Way to fuck stuff up by rushing it to market Sony.
Patrick it looks like the DVD war is over. Blu-Ray will be the new format but toshiba will be making the software to support it.
Anyways as for PS3...i was looking forward to maybe getting one...but if they rush for a 2005 release then i will wait on buying one. They cant afford to rush this system. They will also either need to charge a arm and a leg or swallow the costs of having expensive hardware like sega did...only thing was that sega had 1st party games to support its loss (until people pirated the games which killed them... but thats another story)
Anyways my point is Sony needs to be careful. they are risking there whole company. If the PSP and Ps3 dont do amazing numbers there is a chance that Sony may die off. they dont have the money. Sony needs to stop making mistakes. I love the Ps2 but they just need to rethink what there doing.
Sony, die off.... dude do you know how long sony has been around. Sony has been a leader in the electronics arena way longer than there was a playstation. Even if they did screw up and the ps3 flop, how many companies can touch their tv's? They still sell millions of laptops, desktops, sound systems, tv's, music... shall i go on?
you dont watch the news much do you? or follow business information. Sony has been losing alot of money and the PS3 project has not been helping cus they have been dropping billions into researching the cells for the longest time. and the chip isnt even ready. its way to new for the industry. sony bit to much off to chew. im not saying that its gonna happen but it could if sony doesnt watch it. sony is a big company but not impossible for it to die off. it has been hurting. but i have a feeling the PSP is gonna do well and pull them out of it. as for the PS3 i dont know what will happen with that.
Xbox will own this time around, Playstation 2 was a fluke. That was the only time that a system held first place for 2 hardware rounds. Xbox will own this time, and nintendo will eventually stop making systems. Just like sega. We're going to see Mario on Xbox 1080

Microsofts been hurting just as bad as sony... if you followed buisness information, you'd know that.
If you followed buisness news, you'd know Microsoft was hurting just as bad, if not worse.. sorry for the repeat messages that was an accident.
yea but M$ can handle the hurt. Sony is a 2nd rate company compared to most other companys. like cameras... Kodak and Canon totally beat sony. same goes for computers and pretty much everything there into. M$ will always have money coming in they have been hurting lately but god knows they can handle it. I hate M$ with a passion but I have to admit that they are one company that will survive.
sony's r&d into their cell isn't limited to the ps3. its applications are being shopped around for other hardware. the ps3 will win again because people who transitioned from ps1 to ps2 are for the most part, fiercely loyal if only for the fact that it wasn't microsoft behind it, and the x-box was too long of a wait. with sony, they have both hardware and software capabilities. another part of the fanbase are sony fanatics who see sony as a brandname and not just an electronics company. sort of like the apple ipod people. the x-box has or had yet to commit to the next gen dvd format. sony as vested interest in blu-ray. with the capabilties of the space utilized, there are better graphics and more room to utilize online features in faster time than at current speeds. the size of the disc will matter more with more games will go HD for HDTVs.
If i could put down a deposit on the ps3, i would. it will blow everything away. esp after the mtv "REVELATION" of the xbox. all they did was take an ipod inspired design, improved graphics and woaaah listen to this: made an online community... really disapppointing. nthng to improve gameplay. sony is gonna rule.. the only thing is that a late launch may bite really bad because nobody likes to wait.. though i will...
#22 and i suppose playstation has something in mind to improve gameplay? XBOX has a good design and at this point graphics are the reason i think most people want to upgrade, and the addition of a good centralized gaming network only makes it easier to play online game. I'm no xbox fanboy, i like ps2 just as well game wise, graphics wise its lame. What was the point of your post, and yes i know what is the point of my post. Go XBOX 360 and PS3!!! Can't wait to play them
Fact: God hate's console fanboys.
Other than that, I'm neutral here. Microsoft has been hurting in the stocks a lot. So has Sony. Both companies are looking for new ways to make money. Sony's stock jumped up at the release of the PS2.
You dudes are crazy. Sony is not going to win the console wars this round. I for one have always been a sony fan in both their consumer electronics and their consoles but the playstation 2 left a bad taste in my mouth. Sure after 2 years they finally fixed their crappy laser problem but by that time i was on my third ps2 and had just bought an xbox. I have never looked back ever since. I have heard the horror stories about the first gen xboxes but i still have my version 1.0 xbox and have never had a single problem. It all comes down to quality and microsoft has proven itself. They will own this time around.

Actually with the promise of exclsive games like HALO 3 and Perfect Dark 0, microsoft has the upper hand in the console race. No one has mentioned nintendo yet though?! I think they're gonna sit back ,enjoy the show, and take notes on what they want to implement on the Revolution. Plus with Nintendo falling to 3rd place they have more to prove than Microsoft and Sony.
as long as square-enix goes with playstation 3 and the playstation 3 hardware is alot better than the xbox 360 (which it will be), i think i'll stick with the more trusted company(sony). also i'd prefer a console with more hd space than 40 gigs (thats smaller than my 6 year old computer hard drive)
Microsoft will force the PS3 out early and Sony is dumb enough to rush it out. It wont be finished, but they will release it. We saw it happen with the GameCube.
Responding to the story at hand, I highly doubt that Sony will be able to bring out the PS3 in 2005, it would be an expense that even Sony wouldn't be able to afford. This is clearly a pathetic attempt for Sony to shift some of the current limelight back to themselves (That being said, I thought the mtv special was almost as pathetic, elijha wood and some stars coming out and saying how the next xbox is going to be so "hot", and then a little deathmatch where they didn't even let you see the screens!)
As far as the xbox 360 being weaker than the ps3, I think that is very doubtful. A 3-core processor running at 3.2 ghz!! 512 mb of gddr3 memory! The CELL processor is certainly interesting, but I think at the end of the day, the PS3 will be roughly matched to the xbox 3 in raw power (if not slightly underpowered). The games are of course the most important thing.
As far as bluray being the defacto next generation optical disk, You wish! It certainly has some advantages over hd-dvd (most notably capacity), but with the announcement of a higher capacity hddvd with nearly the same capacity of a bluray disk, the playing field is very close right now. Many analysts think that the name HD-DVD itself may draw consumers more than BLURAY, although this can certainly be debated. There are powerful forces on both sides, and this fight is far from over. (I'm sure Sony is praying to whatever God it believes in that bluray gets on top)
Yea as far as the hard drive, 20 gigs should be more than enough for the majority of gamers that will not use it for much more than saving games and possibly ripping discs. Give me a break. It hasn't even been confirmed that the PS3 will have a hard drive.
Overall I think it is pretty clear to all sane parties that there will be quite a drawn out battle between the two giants, but my personal opinion is that the xbox 360 will edge it out.
Yeah, nice work. Microsoft's Xbox division is STILL losing millions every year. Both Nintendo and Sony's SCE turn large profits. If Microsoft win this round of the console wars, it will be through their dump-money-on-everything business model and at the expense of games actually being a viable business.
Just thought you should know.
have you checked out the specs of the cell yet? its gonna beat out the 3 g5 cores of the xbox easily. theres no way ps3 wont have a harddrive: they have to make FFXI backwards compatable (yeah ps3 will be backwards compatible and xbox will not be due to the graphic architexure changes). sony has been working on the ps3 for a while too, whose to say if it did come out 2005 that that would be prematurely? more importantly the game selection is going to be crap on the xbox (that means halo as well. exception: for need for speed) and great on ps3 (FF,metal gear, silent hill,GTA,DDR,ape escape).
although it probably wont be as powerful i'd still probably rather get the next nintendo console for zelda, super smath bros, metroid, namcos "tales of __" series, and a few others. btw rumors say nintendo is also going cell.

You fail it. One layer of HD-DVD goodness is 15GB; one layer of Blu-ray is 25GB. And there are prototypes of eight layer Blu-ray discs. Eight layer HD-DVD discs are not even possible, as the surface layer of an HD-DVD is 0.6mm vs. a BD's 0.1mm. You proudly refer to the fact that Toshiba and co. announced a three layer HD-DVD disc, and that it's only 5GB short of a dual-layer BD. So, um, if you think the playing field is level here, you are seriously deluded. Blu-ray is tremendously superior, technically speaking, and the only argument against it is that it's more expensive to adapt existing DVD plants to its production than it is to adapt them to HD-DVD -- and that is, in fact, because it's technically superior.
I have to go with sony they have a time proven track record. They survived the beta/vhs wars. They killed the compition in the cassette/cd & vhs/dvd transition so its safe to assume(at least for me)that we will have a-lot of BLU in our future. One more thing 360 lovers will your console be internet 2 compatible probly but i havent herd anything about it.
"yeah ps3 will be backwards compatible and xbox will not be due to the graphic architexure changes" - Completely incorrect.
Xbox harddrives will have the ability to play xbox 1 games. Such as HALO 2. It is even going to launch with the system. go to xbox.com and view the specs on the console itself. I believe they are using a different GPU, however, they must have developed an emulator of some sorts. All i know is they are infact backward compatible.
Known.
Sorry for a double comment, however the bluray and HD-dvd... Oh my god. Need i mention betamax Vs. VHS??? technical specs mean nothing to an open market and the market is hardly open considering ALL manufacturers are considering HD the best as of now. 25 GiGs? Honestly, 15 is already too much. We probably wont be able to discern the differences in HD and Bluray. Gear up people, sony isn't dying, however, they are in SERIOUS trouble.
X-psFan.
If I were Sony, I'd just let the XBox release first and then spend time on making a perfect machine. They shouldn't be scared of losing market share as serious gamers will get both units. And as they all say, software makes a good console. Sony has always had a great library of games compared to it's competitors. Just as long as they keep their ties with the software developers, they can beat the XBox. But if XBox games become more mainstream and gameplay-oriented (as opposed to graphics-oriented) then Sony might have a hard time.

Interesting times ahead in the console world. Even if only to watch one or more of the companies crash and burn (and we all know...we all LOVE to watch things crash and burn...)
That being said, I do think it's interesting that people are propheseing doom for one of these two companies (or at least their console hardware interests).
I think Nintendo is really the only one that is in danger of dropping of the registers as far as market share goes, and even at that, as I've said before...Nintendo has a definite appeal in the youth demographic, and also a loyal fanbase in the ranks of those who purchase their consoles themselves (adults). So long as Nintendo does not let it's reach exceed it's grasp and just continues doing a good job serving their well established consummer base, they'll do fine. They won't dominate...but they will be profitable.
But as far as the showdown between Sony and MS...I think this is more of a boxing match than a pistol duel. One shot ain't gonna get it...it's a slugging match. If you look at history for a model of a videogame giant that fell...you inevitably find SEGA (I weep for thee...*sniff*). Sega OWNED the arena in the glory days of the Genesis and the infamous SEGA scream. But Sega eventually WAS edged out. I say again EVENTUALLY...it didn't happen all at once. They had powerfull hardware and great games, few argue that, but they also made mistakes, many and costly, sustained and in series. No SINGLE mistake toppled them (or at least their hardware division for the most part), and if you took out any one of their larger mistakes the whole landscape might be different now. But put it all together, and you've got Sonic on the Cube...
MS and Sony have troubles, and have made some mistakes on both sides, but not accross 3 generations as Sega did (not yet anyway). And they each have deeper pockets than Sega ever did as well. MS has demonstrated the whole way through the life of the Xbox that they are willing to lose money on the entire Xbox project until it finally gives something back. And Sony, well...Sony has PRIDE and a stubborn streak a mile wide (Memory Stick anyone ?). This may change with their new western influenced administration, but this far into the upcomming generation...Sony is in it no matter whose at the helm.
MS has Longhorn coming within the next year (*snicker*-by years end '06) and Sony has Cell slated for use in a number of different products. Both companies are gearing up to reinvigorate themselves, and since hype is king they probably will increase sales accross the board in the next 2 years before all the results come in about Longhorn and Cell. But that's plenty of cash to subsidize both platforms to the end of the PS3/XB2 era.
Long story short (waaaaay to late I know), this gen could be a turning point, but it's not sudden death...
I plan to just sit back and watch the fun. Or maybe this time I should use this console war for the only thing that wars are good for. PROFITEERING. I'm moving to Japan in the fall and will be there for at least a year.
Anybody need a contact for some gray market import/export ? If Lik-Sang can charge 2xRetail+shipping so fanboys can have decks 5 months early, why can't I ??? >:)

Wow, Xbox Informed, you really are uninformed. The "open market" has actually given Blu-ray a great deal of support. The Blu-ray Disc Association has over 100 members, including Sony, Matsushita (Panasonic), Dell, Electronic Arts, HP, Apple and Walt Disney. HD-DVD's biggest names are Toshiba, NEC, Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema, Universal and Paramount. To pretend that this is a one-sided battle -- let alone "ALL manufacturers are considering HD the best as of now" -- is complete bullshit.
If "15 is already too much," why, then, are Toshiba pushing their 45GB three-layer HD-DVDs? Well? Maybe it's because HD video uses a lot of space, and once you add DTS, Dolby and other audio layers, and special features, you're pushing 30GB?
"Too much" for what, anyway? It's quite obvious it's not nearly enough for HD movies, and of course, as a general purpose storage solution, we want as much as we can get. Most people, I imagine, wouldn't just decide that "15GB is too much anyway" simply because the far better storage solution was designed by Sony. I personally need 50GB to back up my bare essentials, and I'd love to put all that on one disc -- and that disc will be a Blu-ray disc.
Besides, what are you whinging about, you Xbox fanboi? The Xbox 360 has neither HD-DVD support nor Blu-ray -- it has just plain old DVD. So what is the point of championing HD-DVD? The Xbox doesn't have it anyway! Are you just trying to point out something else it doesn't have?
Seriously, the uninformed don't come much more uninformed, and stupid, than you.
Well, I could be wrong. On the news story above some charming idiot wrote that the Xbox 360 was bigger because it had to fit three CPUs in it. Apparently he didn't know what "three-core" meant. So, perhaps your uninformed stupidity is not so unique on Engadget.
P.S. I don't have a Playstation and I'm not even a Sony fan. (Their MP3 players suck.) But I really admire, and want, Blu-ray. Because I'm a consumer and not a fanboi I pick the best product.
i don't exactly worry that much for sony, no doubt there are sony-spies in microsoft and microsoft-spies in sony. it won't be surprising that sony might have known right from the start that MS is gonna release xbox360 this yr. (and who knows MS might delay xbox360? nobody knows!)
i think sony should take one competitor at a time and concentrate on the PSP market this year, this thing is selling quite nice, and prospects are there. if xbox can wow people being released a few months later than ps2, ps3 can be released in summer 2006 and still drive attention with the possibly even better chip and I/O; if they could, link the psp with ps3, psp might already have a really strong stand by then.
i don't think backward support is really that neccesarily, given that PS2 prices are low enough now, and the newer version is so small.
PS3 will rock:)
PLAYSTATION WILL RULE YET AGAIN!!!
If that is the PS3 logo...it looks like a piece of sh!t.
Hmm wasn't the PSX released early in Japan and as a result ended up missing a lot of promised features. I hope that doesn't happen here.
i consider the current ps2 to be a leader in software. xbox doesnt come close to the quality of games the ps2 offers - this is due partly to it being a japanese company and the japanese games. xbox was limited mostly to american games and the fps genre, hence all the pc gamer fans.
i think the trend will continue in the next generation. new hardware, same scenario. it just makes sense to me. again it comes down to the games and what the consumers like. it seems like the Station's games come in a much larger variety while xbox games come in narrower genres and smaller fanbases. and again it seems like the next gen consoles will play out the same way.
The question I have is will it be compatible with non-LCD and Plasma wide screen projection monitors. I recently puchased a Hitachi 57 inch, and I was told not to play my PS2 on it, because of potential screen burning, can anyone shed any light on this?
Will this new system be compatible with projection TV monitors, recently purchased a Hitachi monitor and I was told to not use my PS 2 because of potential screen burning. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I really don't understand why microsoft keep saying they are a STRONG second to Playstation 2. PS2 rackedup 87 million sales, and xbox 20 million. it is a POOR second worldwide and a strong second in USA. That's it. They keep saying they are at PAR with sony. at best, xbox is just a imitation of dreamcast. even its controllers are the same!! PS3 will be backward compatible with PS2 and PS1 and therefore MILLIONS of PS2 players will still by PS3 console. Maybe americans will buy xbox360 (a namecheat. its really xbox 2) Maybe sony will name it PS3-61, just to one-up pretenders like xbox360 and microsoft.
