Engadget & Joystiq's live coverage of Sony's PlayStation 3 launch
Hey everyone, we're at Sony's press event in Culver City to cover their unveiling of the PlayStation 3 this afternoon. Things are just getting started, to stay tuned for our comprehensive live coverage on Engadget and Joystiq!
Update: the parking lot ordeal was harrowing — they almost didn't let us in! It was a mob scene out there. Some journos were so desparate to get in that they went through all sorts of contortions for the gatekeepers. Check this lady out. That's a pushup with one foot above her head.
Ouch.
The presentation started with a little game history. "PlayStation 2 defined digital entertainment.... PlayStation
Portable, the next revolution!" The chest thumping was accompanied by thumping speakers.
First up: Kaz Hirai. "Are you guys excited about E3?" The audience barely cheered, so he had to try again. C'mon, show us the goods, then we'll be excited... maybe.
He does the numbers: 190 million units of hardware, 2 billion units of software. He does the backwards compatibility thing. These are the Sony strengths, so he reminds the audience that these are the goods that Microsoft can't match. No surprises here, but a specific response to the Xbox team, who weren't so sure last week whether they'll be able to make the Xbox 360 play Xbox games. [Update: Xbox 360 will be backwards compatible.]
Queue pointless interlude of flashy CGI graphics (not sure what that was for).
Ken Kutaragi introduced, and he proceeds to give the audience another lesson on the history of the PlayStation consoles. From "Real-time 3D-CG" to "Emotion Engine." He confirms backwards compatibility of the PlayStation 3, eliciting the first audience applause since he took the stage.
Cut to a video of an IBM dude woodenly reading from a teleprompter (his eyes dart quickly left-to-right) about the cell processor system. "Even though at times it seemed like an impossible journey, the entire team overcame impossible challenges to meet the goals.... We are very excited to look forward to see all the entertainment this chip will help create." All that's missing from this mess of trite mumbo-jumbo the word "synergy."
Highly technical performance overview given, including the following slides:
Sony's let go of the final specs and shots of the PlayStation 3. Here you go!
- It will support Blu-ray (obviously), DVD±R/W, CD-R/RW
- Backwards compatible with the PlayStation 2 and original Playstation
- One 3.2GHz Cell processor—total system performance rated at 2.18 teraflops (uh, that's actually about twice what Microsoft is claiming the Xbox 360 will do); it will have 256MB system RAM 3.2GHz, and 256MB GDDR VRAM at 700MHz
- The nVidia graphics will be called the RSX ("Reality Synthesizer"), and will trump the Xbox 360 with 1080p (yes, that's a p) graphics support.
- There will be a 2.5-inch hard drive (i.e. laptop hard drive) attachment—a first for a Sony launch (no, we don't
count the PSX and/or the FF add-on)
- Memory Stick Duo slot, and very surprisingly, an SD and CF slots
- Bluetooth support with up to seven wireless controllers
- Six USB system ports
The Technology Demos
So the specs are beginning to wear on the audience and people around us are shifting in their seats. Show us the graphics already!
Sony is only too happy to oblige. In one of the earliest demos they show a gas station blowing up, repeatedly. Lots of bits and pieces flying through the air to prove that the processer can handle the detritus of an explosion with ease. Another demo showcased a flyover of luscious and detailed landscapes that had been generated through procedural software routines only. That's like fractals, right? Well, it looked good.
This was followed by a demo showcasing the PS3's new LOD technology, or "Lots of Ducks" as the executive showcasing the technology referred to it. It was a reference to the little rubber duckling that was shown during the PS2 "Emotion Engine" demo. Hey — it's been 6 years since the PS2 launched and still nobody can explain to us what the hell the "Emotion Engine" is, other than great marketing.
So back to the LOD technology. The old PS2 demo was shown and morphed into the PS3 rendering of the same scene. Ok... better graphics, same damned duck. Then they popped in a couple of pirate battleships, each with impressively animated sails getting shot through with cannonballs.
So what's better than a bathtub with one rubber ducky and a couple of toy ships? Well, there's probably as much plastic in an E3 booth babe as in one of those ducks, but unfortunately Sony filled the tub with about a thousand more ducks. They all bobbed happily on top of each other, each individually rendered and beautifully colliding.
Sony also demoed a new and improved EyeToy interacting with the water in the bathtub. Holding a cup in each hand, the demonstrator dipped them into the water and filled them up, and poured them out. He filled one cup and poured it into the other. This was very cool and one of the wow moments of the presentation. Ripples of excitement bounced through the audience. Sony clearly wants everyone to know that the PS3 makes bath time lots of fun.
(Photo: this is one of those "architecture" slides. Does it actually tell us anything? Someone sic Tufte on the Sony people, quick.)
Games, games, games.
The game demos were divided into two groups: established franchises and new stuff. The demos of established franchises were arguably the more impressive and more polished of the two batches.
New: Motor Storm (Sony). This demo included about 60 seconds of truly chaotic game footage. It's a racing game, but a wonderfully muddy, violent and georgeously rendered-one from the looks of this footage, which definitely jazzed the audience. On reaction alone this was a crowd favorite. In the footage, motor vehicles of all types (dirtbikes, ATVs, dune buggies, rally cars) crashed into each other as they raced through muddy gulches and over high embankments. Motorcycles rode over the tops of slower vehicles and sometimes got crushed by larger vehicles. The violence was crunching and visceral and the entire experience immersive as a result of the realistic way in which mud, people, and parts of vehicles flew absolutely everywhere. Screenshot shows a motorcycle rider about to get creamed by an exploding rally car that's flying through the air at him.

Established title: Killzone (Sony) This game about interplanetary strife appears to be Sony's answer to Halo. All of the elements are here: explosions, guns, high-tech vehicles that drop marines into hostile territory at great risk of bodily harm, blah blah. The demo footage looked extraordinary, and maybe this time developer Guerilla will nail Sony's answer to Halo. One of the reviewers of Killzone for the PS2 said:
The potential for Guerrilla to develop a truly impressive FPS title on the PS2 is obviously there, but it's a learning curve that players won't be scaling anytime soon. The PS2's answer to "Halo"? Don't make us laugh.
Here's to hoping that the game lives up to the impressive footage we saw during the PS3 unveiling.

They both have advantages, Xbox's main advantage is the already builtin hd and media center deal oh and don't forget the billions of cash they can spend on marketing. The ps3's main advantage is better hardware and better hd support (much better). The sucess will be determined game selection and pricing
Wow, I have never seen so many PS haters. Just admit the defeat now, poor PC wannabes.
To those who are knocking the PS3's controller, don't be that easily discouraged...Sony is going to have another controller that is functional with the console and it beats any Xbox controller hands down, I also have the pleasure to hold one in my hand...see link below:

some impressions on e3:
xbox: decent showing (mostly because there was no comparison when they first showed off their box) and good to see strong online plan but plan was a little unclear.
ps3: too early to tell but definitely beats everyone with hardware. even if they didn't quite meet their own specs-they would still beat everyone. it's good that they were specific because that will hold them to their promises. ps3 seems to be the only console that is at least trying to define the much hyped term "next gen console".
nintendo: interesting online plan but no real hardware or software specs makes their showing the weakest for gamers. nintendo once again proving they are the little japanse company moms go to that want safe games for their kids.
overall: there should be an overwhelming release of playable demos to get excited about but i saw very little meaning xbox launch titles will be slim pickings and same goes for ps3 and nintendo.
the ps3 is far better looking will have better games and has more than twice the graphics capability of the xbox 360. And a game on a 50 gig blue-ray disk compared to the old 4.7 gig dvd format makes a BIG difference in length vs graphics in a game. the ps3 wont have to sacrafice either. And every game so far for the xbox 360 are games that were said to be on the standard xbox last year, i think this is all just a marketing scheme by microsoft. please dont fall for it.
I know this may be a little old now but I just read through half of the comments of people saying 'it's not the real one' before the pictures proved it.
Well, did anyone actually bother to watch the whole Sony press conference over at gamespot like I did?..Sony actually unvieled that console near the end of the 1hr50min presentation.
So yes, it is real, now let's concentrate on the actual games.
To post number 507((maybe 506, can't remember)). You are nothing greater than a Fan-Boy. Yes, the Revo will be awesome. But you don't know a single thing about it's specs, so you can't say either of the 360 or PS3 sucks compared to it.
Personally, I'm buying all three. I'm going to enjoy my PS3 and Revo way better than my 360, though.
What we see here at E3,
Game consoles by companies.
From 360 to Playstation 3,
Revolution is what I see
The good, the bad, and the ugly.
I have to say it honestly,
Who care if it Xbox 360,
Or PS3 or Revolution, you see,
Show me the games honestly,
Not the tech demos that look like CG.
Then which system will lead the industry
I can tell you it's will be me
With my Revolution-360-3.

PLAYSTATION I LOVE YOU!!!!
Been a playstation fan since day one... i've never picked up an X-Box, or Game Cube.
Keep it coming sony, and i'm going to keep on buying it...lol
The Battle is over playstation is the winner. Obviously we are all nerds, we realize playstation has defeated this puny xsquare thing. The design does not matter what matters is what is in. To all those xsquare lovers you must accept defeat and do the math.
The ps3 console looks great and i like the 3 colors (i wont get white cuz ill stain it somehow) but i personally think that the controllers are to different than the ps2 ones but the xbox 2 ones are just like wireless xbox controllers you can buy i hope there will be a different controller for ps3
To all of the Sony fanboys out there. From what I read and seen, the PS3 will outperform the Xbox 360, but not by as much as Sony wants you to believe. As all of us should remember, Sony has overhyped the power of their consoles so far. For example, Sony said that the graphics of the PS1 would look like the T-Rex on Jurassic Park, but we all saw what the truth was there. Sony also said that the PS2 would be able to run Toy Story-like graphics in-game, but as we all can see, it did not turn out quite that way.
I am not saying that the PS3 is going to be a bad system. In fact, after watching some of the videos of some PS3 games, it looks like I will be spending a lot of money when I buy a Xbox 360 and a PS3 (I still wonder how much that will cost).
As far as I can tell, both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 have a lot of things going for them when it comes to games. On the Xbox 360, I am looking forward to such games as Perfect Dark: Zero, Quake 4, Project Gotham Racing 3, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 3, and Dead or Alive 4. The will also be other games such as Ninja Gaiden: Black, Fable 2, and Halo 3. On to the PS3, games suce as Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Tekken 6, and Killzone 2 look interesting, and I may have to check them out when the PS3 arrives.
There are other games that I am looking forward for these consoles, but I don't have the time to list them all.
As you can see, I am not what you would call a fanboy. I tend to give consoles a chance, and even if a console does not live up to the hype, it all comes down to the games in the end.
Thank you for reading my opinion. If anyone has a complaint, just let me know and I will provide you an email address to send your complaints to me.

Check this out...Interview with Phil Harrison (Sony VP) on what the real deal is with the game trailers (eg. Killzone)
This is an excerpt of what he said:
"Eurogamer: One question on the lips of many people at the moment: how much of what we saw in the PlayStation 3 demos was actually running in real-time?
Phil Harrison: Everything in the demos was real-time.
Eurogamer: And what about the game footage clips?
Phil Harrison: Not all of that - in fact, none of it was real-time because it was all running off video. If you make a presentation to two and a half thousand people, you're going to put some of it on video just to be on the safe side.
I've been asked this question a lot. The way we put those videos together, everything was done to specification. Everything was done to PS3 spec. Virtually everything used in-game assets; some things were rendered.
Eurogamer: How representative of what we're actually going to be seeing in PS3 games were those videos?
Phil Harrison: I think very. I think depending on the game, different games took a different approach to their way of expressing what the games are like - but clearly, something like MotorStorm uses more cinematic, replay-like cameras than you would ever enjoy in-game. So that makes a big difference... But everything is done to spec."
Here is the full interview:
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=59243
Basically, what he said is that many of the trailers were rendered (because the actual PS3 hardware that is able to real-time render it was not given to them with enough time to produce a proper realtime demo....
YET...and this is the good part...everything in the motor storm and KILLZONE game trailers were using a ps3 rendering/computational asset to the PS3 specifications, meaning that this is nearly/exactly identical to the game that will be produced by the ps3 when the game is actually sold to the public (at least graphics, sound, AI, and physics-wise). This also means that the PS3, at 2.18 TeraFLOPS can make a game that looks and plays as pretty as the KILLZONE game trailer.
Awesome.
Revolution is superior.
People in Ms were/still pissing in their pants because they know they will lose the battle before the war starts.
I don't give a $@*t what the PS3 will looked like but the spec is the thang we should take notes.
And i'm sure the PS3's design is not the final design.
Does anyone notice that the Playstation3 fonts exactly the same as SPIDERMAN fonts? (what a crap)
BTW, hail to PS3.
you sad people
GET A LIFE
Kool. i m 531 number post.. So many Ps3 lovers around. all i can say is "ITS A SONY"
In this post in IGN this is what was said..
IGN:Is the Killzone sequence a fair example of what people can expect from realtime gameplay on PlayStation 3?
Jan-Bart: Yeah, it's basically a representation of the look and feel of the game we're trying to make
....
That sounds to me that is not real time. as it was a demo representation.. Lies Lies. Some people at sony cant get there story in sync.
As for the graphical power.. Wait till the ATI is finally done and lets see how well it does against the Rsx. Remember guys the Rsx is a PC chip the ATI is not.. Custom made for x360. Read these articles on the design of the ATI chip and how it might even beat Rsx in performace. Keep in mind they are going for performance and efficient. Not just raw power. Kind of how AMD is more efficeint design and still outperforming Intels raw power in alot of calculations.

I am interested to see what Halo 3 will look like on the Xbox 360. This is going to be an interesting time to be a gamer.
I say Killzone is real.
If there are any 3D developers out there like me you should know some stuff.
OK, it's a video. Of course it's a video! It's a demo presentation for gods sake! PS3 is still in development, they wouldn't risk to play any game in real time in the E3 press conference...
I think Sony is not building a next-generation console, Sony is skiping one generation trying to deliver something way ahead of our time.
The Cell processor along with the RSX are capable of doing things like Killzone is real-time, I have no doubt.
The Cell will calculate physics and interactions, all the math calculations and RSX is going to process all graphics - this will be a GREAT duo, trust me.
People, they made an uber-graphics processor just for the PS3, something that has no comparision with today's GPUs...
If Unreal was in real-time why don't you believe Killzone was too?
Also, do you remember that other FPS they showed? Killzone isn't that different technicaly.
Look at the videos again and make your judgement, but I say PS3 will kick ass for many many years... Sony is doing history...
(bear in mind I have NOTHING to do with Sony or PS3 or Killzone)
The whole point is that if the demos were prerendered were in for another potential ps2 scenaro where everything looked great until the actual console came out. Im certain these were prerendered and enhanced beyond what developers are capable of creating at this point in time. Maybe once the ps3 starts to get towards the middle and end of its probably 6 year cycle will we see games look like the killzone 2 demo. Remember, sony can show off all the games they want and make a super computer with a million teraflops of power, but if developers are incapable of harnessing this power, at least to the extent they need in order to show significant improvement over xbox 360. Even the current Xbox is only just now reaching its apex of graphics and power because developers now know the system well enough and technology has caught up with the systems specs.
i personly can not wait for the ps3 release it is gna be so much better then the ps2 it looks to be about the same size as the ps2 but it is gna have much more technoligy in it and the graphics are incredable so much more realistick then the other consoles
Xandui: developers have to adapt to new systems when they they come out, one way or another. I mean, when a new console is released, if the system changes, developers must adapt.
If a game system has power, developers will use that power, I have no doubt about it...
What do you (and everyone else) understand by 'pre-renderered'?
I believe Killzone was ran in real-time in a PS3-like system with equivalent capabilities but of course, what you saw was a video 'recording' of that.
I do believe Sony is going to aim way upper that any company.
For example, Havok, among many others, is capable of calculating very difficult physics in a nano-second in your own home pc. As the games don't aim to use global illumination for now and only textures/shaders (which are easily renderered, too) I guess a very-well-built system (like I hope PS3 to be) is capable of doing things like Killzone in real time.
Shoot me if I'm wrong (don't, please. I was just kidding :P )
ummm heres a link to a game trailer... forgot where i got it but its awesome.... nice graphics
http://playground.hypnotic.net/killzone.mov
I understand your point completly, developers are going to adapt to new technology, however, no one was really expecting ps3 to be as advanced as it is. Dont get me wrong, i love technology and i am just as excited as the next guy to see what the ps3 will be capable of, but a logical jump in terms of technology is shown in xbox 360 over ps3. I believe we will see games that look like killzone did at E3 in the future on ps3, but not until developers really fully understand the ins and outs of ps3 and develope new techniques and gameplay experiences that will truely harness its power. There is also the problem of costs to developers with this next generation, and i simply dont see the motivation for a company, who has created a beautiful and engaging title, to spend millions more and make look as good as it really could. There are also many games that go across all platforms and a developer like EA, who is more concerned about pulling a profit then delivering that classic gaming experience these days, is not going to invest extra effort in a madden title for ps3 when they can ship the same exact title across all three platforms.
Theres really no point in arguing about whether it was prerendered or not because if im wrong, its a good thing meaning that we can expect games like that. But if ps2 has taught me anything it is not to be fooled by sony's press conferences and early displays of power because early ps2 footage looked a thousand times better then its launch titles. Just remember, take everything sony says and shows with a table spoon of salt.
PS3 Its gonna Rule....Yea Right.
Where is this piece of Vaporware ?
No one, including SONY had one present at E3.
They have a MODEL. They have a PLAN.
They spout specs, but have NOTHING to show you.
If MS did this people would Scream Bloody Murder.
You SONY Fan Boys listen up.
I bought a PSP, guess what? Its NOT AS POWERFUL AS SONY PROMISED. HMMMM
I bought a PS2, guess what? Its NOT AS POWERFUL AS SONY PROMISED. HMMMM
I bought a Beta Max, guess what? It was NOT AS POWERFUL AS SONY SAID IT WAS.
See a pattern here yet ?
Hype is good, but be able to SHOW THE GOODS if your gonna talk trash.
SONY has NOTHING to show ANYONE
Someone needs to stand up and call cough BULLSHIT.
yup thats right they talk 2 much bull.. console line up
#1 revolution
?i dont care about the rest
i do not believe my eyes on how horific ps3 looks like n had to check few more sites to b sure the pics were real. i am a ps hardcore fan. Had my ps1, ps2 and soon psp but no way am i gona fit that thing in my living room.
dude #542... ur a complete idiot. the psp WAS as powerful as they said it was gunna be. dont try to come over here acting like u no crap when all u did was hear it from angry xbox fanboys. OH and xbox said if u put the power of ps2 in the size of a penny, and fill up the xbox, thats how powerful it would be. and ur saying sony talks bullshizzle. go suck ur man friends dick.
Xandui: we'll have to wait. :)
Take GT4, for example (and I think it's best example around), for PS2.
It uses 94% of the console capabilities and DAMN, it looks good! It is, indeed, a pretty damn good example of what PS2 can do. Constant framerate, hi-polygon models (and many of them), reflections, flares, bump maps, specular maps, audio files (a BUNCH of them), etc.
If you think about it, it's pretty advanced as it is.
Well, just an example really. I think PS2 is very powerfull as XBOX is (and I'm not comparing), so I can say I'm very anxious and looking forward to see what next generation entertainment systems are about to provide us.
Developers will just have to adapt the quickest they can... :)
RM: They don't have PS3 ready - true.
But they do have its hardware put together for developers already. Of course it's not the final product but it's close and they (developers) are working with it already as it is...
patrick yee: You got a point on that...damn you be Sony! =
Stop bitching, nobody knows what the systems will be like untill they come out.
Hey Sony fans, I think you guys need to realize something. When was the last time that Sony delivered on a promise when it comes to the power of a console (or other product for that matter)? I believe we all know the answer to this question.
Don't let Sony trick you into thinking that the PS3 will be as powerful as they say it will be.
The truth behind the specs of the consoles:
Xbox 360's three dual-thread 3.2Ghz processors, though about half as effective in floating point calculations, have three times the general purpose processing power as the PS3. Of the articles I've read, analysts agree that from a game console point of view, XBOX360's six-hardware-threaded general purpose central processing unit matrix gives Xbox 360 the edge over Sony's less versitile, harder-to-program-for CELL CPU. Don't let Sony's floating point numbers make you think that the Xbox 360 is only half as powerful, because if you do, you will be disappointed.
Xbox 360 has 5 times the memory bandwidth as the PS3. (278.4GB/s vs 48GB/s) The PS3's memory bandwidth is insufficient to maintain its GPU's peak rendering speed, so don't expect and anti-aliasing or alpha blending in your PS3 games.
Xbox 360's ATI Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is more flexible and has more processing power, even when you discount the PS3's memory bandwidth bottleneck.
i think that the ps3 will be a new revolution for sony i feel if the console looks as good as they say then i will just have to belive them, but if they put as much effort in as they did with the ps2 then this games console will be a huge hit. I have looked at some of grafics people have put on the internet and they look out of this world. but there is one thing lots of people still dont no when this contraption is going to be released on the shelves and we all would like to know when it dose, please take note of this comment i am just intrested in these macines are made. thank you (yours sinserly) (benjamin armstrong)
the ps 3 is about as long as the creator of it
and xbox fanboys, dont admit that the ps2 had better games because they hadnt, just alot of stupid japanese bullshit, with final fantasy on xbox, the xbox has taken away one of the playstations best franchises, if they contract rockstar
RIP sony
We were not comparing PS3 with Xbox... Just discussion PS3 and Killzone demo...
But hey, I'll comment:
I think this is all good news (PS3 AND Xbox) because now games can evolve a LOT and the final consumer is the lucky one a.k.a. us! :D
I dont like the look of the new PS3 much but it is still MUCH better than the xbox and much cooler.
BUT the PS3 kind of looks more like an electric heater than a games console.
The Spiderman font on the front is awful - nobody uses italic anymore!
The new controller design is a piece of shit and I hope it never sees the light of day!
You can tell it has not been designed well aesthetically. It is not well designed like the PS2. The PS2 design was radical and interesting. The PS3 looks like somtihng just quickly rolled off the Sony production line. I think maybe the design of the PS3 is simplified to cut down on production costs.
Chris Royston: you're so right at that point... PS2 design was revolutionary and stylish... PS3 looks like a kitchen accessory like a toaster or something... it really sucks...
The final controller has not been revealed yet, so the one we see there is just an ugly concept, which, taking in consideration PS3 looks, will not be very different...
The exterior sucks. And I really hope the interior to be far different from 'just good'... *sigh*

#554, interesting article, i cant believe that microsoft is playing the our system is more powerful than yours since theyre releasing earlier and have every right to be somewhat less capable a system, hardware wise, than ps3. Now to a more interesting article i read about an interview with Ken K. himself. Apparently were not the only one who have seen that article and he simply brushed off the shot taken at the cell saying that xbox's 3 processors only have more power for "general applications" while the cell will bolster ps3's multimedia capabalities to a level never seen before. The most interesting thing he said was of a new online storage system called cell storage where you could store videos and other sorts of files and access them with your ps3. He also said that ps3 can be used to upgrade standard videos into high defination. This can be done with your dvds as well as he stated the cell will allow you to rip your dvds for viewing and upgrading while still retaining its copy right protection, while im not sure how long itll take someone to get around that. He also said that there is no need for codecs because the cell can decode any kind of video, allowing all formats of video to find a home in the ps3.
#44 ps3 this,ps3that..so much power BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH.calm down there buddy don't nut on ur self over ps3..DONT GET MAD OVER SOME COMMENTS NOW ..i dont care about sony...they still over do it and lie with there trikery...i mean come on what are they gonna do next have it cook you some dinner while you play
ok now sony didn't make up final fantasy, nintendo did, As for some the other games;contra, metal gear, and there is maybe more..but most of the games they got off of ninty were big for sony...sony may have impoved the games but if wasn't for nintendo sony wouldn't have thaught of making a game as good as final fintasy or metal gear.
Okay, let's put this absurd level of controversy surrounding Killzone and Sony's "lies" to rest. I'm going to try to cut through the favorite pre-renders, and remind people of what they may have forgot. Let's go one by one through what Sony showed us on a box that isn't even "final hardware" (the MS fanboy's own saving grace).
1. Luna Pixel Shader Demo - I believe this is real-time. I've heard nothing to the contrary. And this alone looks better than anything I've ever seen done in real-time.
2. Unreal Engine 3 Demo - Real-time. Absurdly beautiful. It speaks for itself, but there are some interesting Tim Sweeney quotes: "Shaders that are more than 200 times more complex than was possible in the previous generation" "All of the effects that you have seen in previous generation movies are now being done in real-time" "We got the first PlayStation 3 hardware only 2 months ago"
Let me guess, Tim is lying for Sony?
3. "Lots of Ducks" Demo - Real-time. Very impressive to anyone who understands the kind of processing power required.
3b. Eye-Toy Duck Demo - Real-time. The things this guy does with two neon cylinders and a current-gen Eye-Toy is jaw dropping (you can hear it in the audience). I've never seen water seperated like that in real-time.
4. Leaves Vortex Demo - Real-time. Hundreds of Thousands of leaves. 5.1 Surround Sound. Every leaf has it's OWN audio channel.
5. Blow-It-Up Demo - Real-time. Uses only the Cell processor. "Renders volumetrically all of the performance required to simulate an explosion, thermo-dynamics, heat, gas, smoke, fire." And this is for a game in development.
6. Alfred Molina Demo - Real-time. Breathtaking. I showed this to a friend and he said "So what? The PlayStation 3 can play DVDs..." not realizing what was happening.
7. Satellite + LIDAR Landscape Demo - Obviously a video, but claimed to be real-time using only the Cell.
8. SOE Fantasy Landscape Demo - Another pre-recorded real-time. Impressive, even with a grain of salt.
9. The Getaway Demo - Pre-recorded but believably real-time.
10 Spider-Man + Gran Turismo Demo - Not sure exactly what's going on here, but the combination is seamless.
11. 12 Simlutaneous Channel HD Decoding/1000 Decoded Media Thumbnails
12. Fight Night Demo - Real-time. You all know it and love it.
13. Final Fantasy VII Tech Demo - I assume this is scripted real-time, otherwise it's just the FFVII intro with a super nice looking Cloud at the end.
14. Video of developers praising the PlayStation 3.
After this is where the drama begins. It's not really clear if any of the game demos are real-time, or just pre-rendered.
So let's assume Sony is "lying." After all, they're not Microsoft. Let's just say all the Sony developed games (The F-1 Game, Vision Gran Turismo, Killzone and some of the games from the second segment) are just CGI.
What about the demos from the other developers?
Are Square-Enix, Electronic Arts, Capcom, Ban Dai, Namco, RockStar, Insomniac, Sega, and UbiSoft lying to us too? Trying to over-hype Sony's system?
The key difference between the hype of the PlayStation 3 vs. the PlayStation 2 is the large showing and support from third party developers. So they're all taking a risk if they're bloating it's capabilities.
Due to this, I think such a level of cynicism based around what has been shown is unrealistic and desperate.
And even with just the REAL tech demos I outlined earlier, anybody with sense would leave their conference impressed. I can't understand this hyper-focusing on a couple of demos, simply because they look too good to be true. I think everything shown was too good to be true.
So anyway, let's just see what happens.
no no tell me it aint so it looks looks like 57 chevy with a boomerang antena lol.
Well said, for one, I think the system is attractive, it says more than just play me (xbox360), it says turn me the h*ll on!! I think the controller is lacking but it's going to grow on us, espcecially when we are playing FFXiii and we are simply blown away.
BluRay is the next standard multiple layers can hold 25-200Gigs of data which will make the games look even greater,
second if you think these videos are too good to be true, you are in for a surprise, since these are just alpha dev kits used to create this. games will only get better on this system.
If you were at e3 you were probably at the Xbox360 playable demos section, not impressive as nextgen games, yeah nice graphics, but nothing thats gonna blow you away, thats the simple truth.
Those demos show that the games changed little, you are still jumping or swimming in a 3d world. Therefore, your talk about better games makes the best system is futile because every system has great games, but sony is favored and will release the highest amount of great games.
Sure Xbox live is great but it wont hold Microsofts market share, when all the hyped games are coming out for Sony who has entertainment corp backing. When you turn on the tube, the only commercials of video games you might see for xbox exclusive titles are halo or kotor.
However everything sony puts out gets on tv even ratchet and clank, spy cooper, I dont even need to mention popular titles, and when you see those commercials on tv sure you'll want a ps3 but you'll want to play those games because they will simply look marvelouse and true next gen.
When Multiplatform games appear, the reviews will favor sony, why? they look better, they play the same, but overall it's just better on the sony ps3, you will see.
Guys this is the new PS E3. It is alredy official.
Go to this site and see the videos. Also the Press Conference: http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/playstation3hardware/media.html
