NES emulator for the PSP?
We're issuing a pretty major disclaimer alert here, since we haven't had a chance to check this out for ourselves, but someone has supposedly banged out an NES emulator for the PlayStation Portable. This one comes just a few days after that Game Boy emulator for the PSP turned up, and we're guessing that like that hack, this app (assuming it's not fake) only works on Japanese PSP running on version 1.00 of the firmware, too.

Yes this is the real deal. You can get more details here: http://www.psphacker.com/2005/05/snes9x-for-psp.html

Why doesn't this work on a JSP version 1.50 PSP? The firmware came out the 24th of March, way before the first hack was made!

The reason these things don't work with newer firmware is because Sony disabled the ability to run non-Sony endorsed code from the Memory Stick in the newer versions.

NES emulator or SNES emulator? The article says "NES", but according to the 1st comment here, it seems to be a SNES emulator...

What's it to Sony what *I* am going to do with *my* PSP in *my* house? Assinine restrictions, like this, aren't going to win me over.

Since one can upgrade the firmware in PSP, what's the reason you couldn't downgrade it back to 1.0 to get the apps working?
How is it blocked?
Tamer Brad @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Woolly Mittens, it's Sony's business because Nintendo could sue them if they didn't prevent it. There's nothing assinine about stopping you from playing the COMPETING COMPANY'S GAMES ON A DIFFERENT PORTABLE.
Personally, I think this is just a terrible thing to come into existence in the first place!
Kirin @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
#7: Uh, why could Nintendo sue Sony? It isn't Sony that's doing the copyright infringing. If I were to crack into a bank's servers using a Dell PC running Microsoft software, would that mean that Dell and MS would be responsible? Anyhoo, emulators aren't illegal, I might want to run perfectly legitimate homebrew NES code on my PSP.
Jim Thompson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Actually, I am sorry. I thought this was the SNES version (The latest). The NES version came out a day or two ago.

Wow that was quick...but comon guys...this is torture. Get to figuring out the version 1.5 encrypted signature.
Andrew L. @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
It's in Sony's interests because the possibility of losing control over the games run opens the door to piracy and other things that would directly hurt Sony.
Bootes @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
I need to figure how to downgrade to 1.0 :(
Davie @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Wow, being an early adopter (v1.0) and paying $400 for something (i hardly ever use) has finaly paid off
Drew Perry @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Yeah, well, all I can think about right now is some old school Legend of Zelda on my PSP. Now THAT would truly kick all.
Cullen @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
yeah but does it use the browser?
Jason Anderson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Forget Zelda, I'd be happy with Tetris, (The original and still the best.) Super Mario Bros trilogy and what the hey, Earthbound Zero for the heck of it. And why now, all those puzzle games that came out for the NES but never had remakes or sequels anywhere else.
Tamer Brad @ Dec 19th 2005 12:14AM
Here's an idea: BUY THE GAMES YOU WANT TO PLAY.
