Sony defends the delay of the PSP European launch

Sony has made a statement to press in defense of the delays on the European launch of the PSP. They're still saying it's gonna hit on September 1, and they're also saying the decision to delay the launch was warranted: "If we had launched in Europe before September, then we would not have been able to meet demand." Right, thanks — we're sure European gamers are completely mollified now. Anywho, when it does finally hit, it'll be going for £179 in the UK and 249 euros elsewhere, which executive VP of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe described as a "killer price point." At about 30% higher than its counterpart in the US, it's a killer, alright.

Those public relation guys back at sony must think this is the best way to sell the psp, and give themselves a good name for the PS3... but seriously, why don't they just ship out all the extra PSPs here in north america that were supposed to be sold out
I feel bad for all the Europeans, they always get the good stuff after Japan, and the US.
Funny, you can order one now in the UK from lik-sang for the 130 price point. Free shipping on all games too. Or you can wait another few months and pay 40 pounds more? Hmm.
maybe they'll fix the dead pixel problems!!
grrr...
That price point killed my desire to buy a PSP. I dread what the games will cost.
That whole corporate euro-to-dollar conversion thing is getting ridiculous. The only thing stopping me from importing one is that dead pixel problem.
I'm not accepting any dead pixels after waiting for half a year and paying half as much again.
i ordered mine thru sonystyle here in hongkong, and they gave me 2 boxes to pick, if the first psp i opened is not satisfactory (dead pixels? dead analogue stick?) they'll open the other one, if the 2nd one is still unacceptable, they refund. quite an interesting thing to do, and i have not heard that in JP nor US....
220 euros for an imported version now vs. 249 euros later this year ... what is sony thinking?
199 euros would be a nice "price point" ... especially with the DS available for only 139 euros ...
And what about Australia?
Again somebody screwed the currency conversion and forgot that European prices have taxes included. The price difference (vat included) f suggested retail prices is more like 4%. It would help if the reporters would actually read these comments and learn. This has been told so many times.
Taxes or no taxes, it's still way more expensive then the DS. I prob won't be buying one for a long time at that price. For some decent functionality you also have to get a bigger mem stick duo, games etc.
Late release and over priced, year old technology from Sony. I think the XBox 360 is looking more attractive.
"... executive VP of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe described as a “killer price point.” At about 30% higher than its counterpart in the US, it’s a killer, alright."
haha..
lik-sang is selling it for 135 but u'll get charged 40 as import tax, brings it right up to the release price.
always someone whinging about not calculating the tax, even if u work out the tax its still £20 over
Sony, do what you want.. you're definitely not 'holding the fort' as DS sales are going through the roof..
Nintendo has all the marketshare and the game releases are starting to pick up.. Animal Crossing DS is going to sell like CRAZY
Yes, Australia always gets shafted. We get the european delays, AND the european prices. At the current exchange rate it looks like the PSP is entering the market at over 400 Aussie Dollars.
You can buy TWO Nintendo DS units for that price... and I think I might do that. Two units with the hope of multiplayer which I can use right now far exceeds one unit with no hope of finding a competitor until September!
And if it isn't insulting enough that we get the console late, we'll even get the game late, with all the shitty european multiple language selection which took them half a year to add to a game which we could have played perfectly well in English, seeing as it's the only official language here.
I love console manufacturers.
Oh, now I feel relieved. I was afraid if I go to the shop now to buy PSP I might have to wait a month or two to get it. Now I know that when in September I go the shop I'll get it right away and be happy to cash out more money than people few months ago for old PSP. Usually, as gadgets get older they get cheaper. So, the end result would be that I'm not buying it. It's way too old, too expensive and they'll anounce PSP2 probably couple of months later.
I don't get it. People who really want one can import a jap one for £130 INCLUDING postage, avoid the duty and have one now.
Hey, I've had mine for 2 months, and it was cheaper even then, with a game, than the UK release price.
Idiots.
I got mine off ebay.COM for $200 for the value pack. cost me £120 incl p&p and no import. I see so many on the tube with them! I really think its going to get to the point where everyone who wants one has one by September for sure!!
