Samsung's 40-inch OLED TV: pics
So that 40-inch OLED panel from Samsung we mentioned yesterday — Akihabara News has gotten the skinny on this skinny TV and snagged some pics. And — it's big. The model didn't even have to fake it — she's clearly impressed by this. One more after the jump.

1280x800 - it's 16:10!
Why would you make a 40" TV that's 16:10?
Nrage @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM

Samsung certainly seems to employ a lot of cute asian chicks.

"Samsung certainly seems to employ a lot of cute asian chicks"
There's a very good reason for that. The marketing works. It's really unfair to take advantage of us sleazy gadget freaks like that. Reminds me of that subscription I used to have to 'T3' magazine. Cool stuff I could never affor, and hot chicks I could never have. It's fricken torture on high gloss laminate...
LOL...maybe I'm just more susceptible than most. I remember when Episode 1 was about to come out, MTV gave so details away a day or two before the premier. It was just a 3 minute spot, the naration came on and said somthing to the effect that they were about to give away some of the plot (plot ? in Ep 1 ?) so if you didn't want it to be spoiled to just 'sit back and enjoy the graphics'. Then this bikini clad asian chick came on stage and started dancing like a stripper with some techno-hiphop music playing. The voice went on talking and DID in fact give away some details that I had tuned in specifically to hear, but honest to god, I was so distract by the shakin' and groovin' that by the time it was over I couldn't remember what the heck had been said, which I'm sure the was whole d@mn point. I felt like such an idiot...
So I did what any idiotic geek would do. I hit rewind and watched it again...
and again...
and again...
and again...
Then as I was digitizing the footage into an mpeg I looked up the spoiler on the internet...
Oh yeah, that's a big TV...

Samsung, sony and all the other companies are just braging about their new screens but when will these hit the stores. I'm tired of all these races but not seeing the stuff in the stores
Dustin Rodriguez @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
It'd just be neat if they put that thing on the market for $500. Overnight, it would become the de-facto standard television that pretty damn near everybody owns. It would put Samsung in such a different territory that their heads would spin. But, they'll price it way too high, it'll only trickle out slowly to market... companies are all into this slow and steady crap rather than huge leaps and revolutions... annoying.
Jeff @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
"Samsung certainly seems to employ a lot of cute asian chicks."
Perhaps that is because they are based in Korea, home to a lot of cute Asian chicks. They've gotta work somewhere...

DM @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
#16 Dustin Rodriguez - They cant prize it @ $500 cause the productions costs are obviously much more. But even if they decided to price it low, for a loss, what would they gain in the long run? It would only help popularising OLED TVs, at the most....Hehe
Gordy @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
"Someone remind me why OLED is so good again..."
Smaller devices, cheaper manufacturing, and no backlighting...all of which is supposed to yield lower prices when compared to LCD.
karmaghost @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Of course, no one has mentioned that the lifespan for OLEDs still suck. The blue color will die first. They look brilliant, but they're not ready to be released yet.
Foof @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
25 - but they're getting much better, fast. The half-life for each of the color elements, including blue, is nearly doubling every 6-8 months or so. So hopefully we'll see big OLED TVs sooner rather than later.

Hassan You are dumbass, how about your race?
does your race have a big electronic company
like Samsung, Sony, LG?
what a hater..
Christopher @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Kiaora, I don't think he meant race as an Asian but race as a competition for bigger screen.
Jason Anderson @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
If only I could even afford something like that. I'd be lucky to afford the $2000 Sylvania 42" Plasma (Non-HD... 480i) we sell at my store.
Guess it's tubes for me for a few more years at least.
Gerard Ramkissoon @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
I applaude Samsung's success with the 40 Inch OLED Display, I would like to know what is the average "life" of that OLED display? and approximate cost?
EPSON bult a large 40" OLED DISPLAY but they joined four 10" screens to make one 40" Display. If anyone at samsung could give me some technical details on their OLED Technology you can reach me the e-mail address i provided. thank you.
Ryan Salomon @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
Jason Anderson:
well, they don't have them that big, but if u want hidef widescreen on a budget, u could go w/a Samsung (or other brand) CRT HDTV. They can do all the way up to 1080i, and have better contrast than most of the lcds. That is what I plan on doing soon. I have a tiny apartment, so no use for a huge tv. I'd go with LCD, but way overpriced for quality & size for me. Plus I will be moving around alot until at least 2 years from now. So I am not looking at this stuff as a serious consumer yet.
I've been reading alot about this technology, and really hope it pulls through. I see OLEDs and DLP battling it out in the future.
To whoever said it (I don't feel like reading through) I agree that it would be nice to hear news of volume production. In the meantime, I just sit back and applaud the progress.
BobObay @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
I agree Jason. I use my old Sony Multiscan G500 21" monitor in my bedroom
for computing, TV,and vid. With a good video card it can deal with any resolution that is commonly available -- and more. Seperate isolated and redundant systems are over and just don't realize it -- but the high price panels have a way to go in both value and performance. Actually projectors are looking better and better to me and may be the way I go next. I like the idea of an integrated system with a projector and an inertial wireless mouse and wireless keyboard. Total freedom of movement and position, with full and easy pc control. Very erg.
TheZodiac @ Dec 19th 2005 1:21AM
