Lexar LDP-200 bare bones SD-based audio player
With most new flash-based MP3 players not offering expansion options, Lexar has taken things into their own hands by releasing a bare-bones player powered by SD cards. At $49.99 without any bundled cards, the LDP-200 supports MP3, WMA, Microsoft DRM, and also works as an SD card reader. If you've already got a lot of SD cards lying around and want a cheap little player, this could be the ticket. If not, you may want to shop around; a little more cash will get you a lot more flash.

I think this thing is great! YOu can get a 1 gig sd card for something like $ 60 if you're a bit lucky. And the best thing about it is that you can also use it for other devices like your cell phone or your PDA.
X has the idea - this way I could, say, use the same SD card for my Palm and for random music when I don't feel like dragging the Palm around or it's too dangerous to do so.
Anyone know where I can get one of these?
Lexar's website (http://lexar.com/mp3/LDP200.html) has some more information, and the ability to buy it from the Lexar Online Store (although the non-bundled MP3 player costs $54.99 there).
So Lexar is moving beyond just memory now. I wonder if they will make other flash based goodies!
look, this is my mp3 player: http://www.pencomputing.com/images/MP3_PanasonicSV-SD75.jpg it's actually the same as Lexar one. It has things I don't like about it: You need the panasonic software to put music on it and you can only use their format. Sucks. The good thing about is: it's now 3 years old and at that time you could get on of these for about 500 bucks. Well, I got mine through ebay for just 50 bucks. So, my Panasonic SD-player is really an alternative to the Lexar one cause the quality is the best ever!!! (Well, what do you expect? It was a $ 500 mp3 player).

Excellent, thanks 3 and 6.

more flash for your cash
Much better product for cheaper:

It comes with a 1GB SD card, it works like a card reader as well, sounds good and the display is crisp. Also compatible with the new MP3 karaoke format.
$119 and until June 22nd, a $30 mail-in.
Mmmmm, finally an mp3 player I'm willing to buy! Anybody knows if it requires special software, or can you just dump the mp3s on the card and plug it in?
This was announced at CES in January. I've had one on order for about 2 months, hopefully it'll actually ship soon.
This is a cool idea. You could shift the cards around from device to device too.
What's the big deal? I bought a Lyra 1071 a little over a year ago and that puppy takes sd cards if you want to expand from the 128k on board. Cost me about 80 bucks but that was at Radio Scrap. I like how I can use the 256k card I got for 18 bucks after rebate for my player AND my dv recorder. With this new one, you've spent about the same amount and you're not stuck with a set amount of space. More flash for the cash my arse!
I've been waiting for these for YEARS. I can't believe that it has taken so long! I hope other mem card versions are right around the corner. I mean, who doesn't have a handful of smart media cars or memsticks laying around?
That's a great idea. I totally would have bought one... maybe I still will.
At least they're charging a reasonable amount for it.
CompUSA has had a self branded version of this player available for months at the exact same price point. The Lexar is slightly more attractive, but they both do the same thing. Two SD slots (for card to card transfers or double the storage), now that would be somehting to post about!
Is that CompUSA player any good?
Lexar players typically are good. The LDP-600 is UMS-compliant and I suspect that the LDP-200 will be too. Lexar speciallizes in SD-cards, so it's a pretty good chance that the LDP-200 will be quality in that aspect.
Who knows what company made that player for CompUSA? Who knows if that company makes decent players?
I've seen pre-order prices of the LDP-200 as low as $30 USD for the version that doesn't come with an included SD-card.
Does anyone know of a similar device that takes Compact Flash cards? I have a bunch of CF capacity lying around that I use for digital photography and wouldn't mind multi-purposing them in-between photo-shoots.
I'm going to pick one up... i look like an ass working out at the gym with my Treo 650 on my arm... No ShoutCast though... bumming..

I had something simliar that used CF. The only problem is that it would only read .mp3 files from the root folder, and their is a limit on the number of files you can put in root, so I was unable to come anywhere close to filling up one of my 1GB CF cards.
I just ordered one of these players bundled without an SD card from www.bhphotovideo.com, the only site I could find that had it in stock. Buy.com has it with various added SD cards also.
I've been looking for something like this because I listen to books on CD (soon to be mp3). Unfortunately, I can't find anywhere that says it will start playing from the place that it stopped (like my car CD player does). Anybody know if this will play from my stopping point or do I have to remember the track each time?
Do you know some reliable online shops for portable mp3 players ? I only find this one
