Toshiba makes its iPod drives slightly smaller
Toshiba has announced that they're making their 1.8-inch hard drives (the ones used in iPods) slightly smaller. The new drives will be available in 60GB, 40GB, 30GB, and 20GB capacities, with the 30GB and 20GB models coming in at 0.2 inches in height and 1.7 ounces, and the 40GB and 60GB models a slightly chunkier 0.3 inches and 2.1 ounces. That's about a shaving of 0.1 inches off the 30 and 20GB models, and even less of a shrinkage of the larger models. Toshiba's also still promising that their 80GB 1.8-inch drive will ship mid-way through this year (um, isn't that like, now?).

I want 120gb ipod drives so I can actually take my entire library with me and have room for expansion.

Maybe instead of smaller iPods, iPods with more things inside at the same size as now.
Guille @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
Nah, a smaller iPod would be nice.

I like the size of ipods currently, i think they should maybe take more width off put keep hight and length. Smaller isn't always better...

If you're talking about putting in more stuff, how about a microphone like the one in almost every other mp3 player? That would actually be useful (and wouldn't require shelling out cash to belkin and the like).

#6 the microphone attachment for the ipod is perfect because you get a good speaker. plus have you used an mp3 player with a mic in it? I have and its horrible, I can't believe people would buy such a device. There's obviously nothing better than an iPod.

I bet that 80gb drive will debut in the 5g iPod. Apple is such a huge customer of theirs, I'm sure they'd be able to work out some sort of exclusive agreement at least for a little while.

Maybe they mean the fiscal year.

The Gigabeat F40 is already out in Japan as the new F41. 3mm thinner with the new HD. No announcement an a F61 yet. I'm thinking they are waiting for the 80GB drive and a new F81?

If iPod comes out with an 80 gig i might buy one, i can put all of my CDs in raw format :D
compression ruins music

#7 "the microphone attachment for the ipod is perfect because you get a good speaker."
a "good" speaker with a 1/2 inch diameter? Sorry, but my ass makes better sound than that "speaker".
"have you used an mp3 player with a mic in it? I have and its horrible"
Yea ? FYI, many mp3 players (including flash ones) let you record @ 128 kbps, and they also have line in to record from external sources.. So which cheap generic model are you talking about?
"There's obviously nothing better than an iPod."
Yea, theres nothing worse.. Oh wait! Did you say better ?
Tomas (gigabeat freak) @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
Someone over at my forum just reminded me that this is not the same drive that Toshiba is using in their F41. The drive in the F41 resides on one platter and is much thinner using the new perpendicular technology... standing the bytes up on one side... or somethign like that :)
Nate MC @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
Jazzay, nice generalization.
Compression doesn't ruin music, bad compression does. There are lots of Lossless codecs out there, but in all honesty LAME alt-preset-extreme works just fine for me with complex music.
I have noticed some pitch changes using preset standard but come on, your a moron if you think all compression is equal and thus it's all bad.
But what do I know, I'm feeding a troll.
Jazzay @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
well sorry, let me rephrase
gimme an mp3 player thatll let me play something higher than 160kbps
low bit rate mp3/wma compression ruins music
Tomas (gigabeat freak) @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
Jazzay: Gigabeat MP3's @ 320kbps
