Ever Green D770X multi-format portable DVD player
We've seen a handful of multiformat DVD players, like the Philips DVP-642, that let you play your DivX, XviD and other files on your TV without having to use a computer or hard-drive player. But none of these do you much good on the road. That's why we were pretty pleased to hear about the Ever Green EG-D770X, a portable player that can handle just about every format you can throw at it, including DivX, XviD, AVI, VCD and various flavors of MPEG. Sure, you can use a PMP instead, but this has a bigger screen (7 inches), and it's got unlimited storage via cheap media. It's a Japan-only product, so pick one up at Sakuraya on your next trip over, and you'll be able to use it on the plane coming back.

But is it a Region free player?

^^^ Exactly the question that popped into my mind. Better buy a stack of Japanese DVD's while you're there. :D

We here in the US aren't without hope. Magnavox's MPD820 sports an 8in screen, has Dolby Digital/DTS output and one of its undocumented features is that it DOES play DIVX and XVID. HOWEVER, YOU MUST RENAME FILES with an .mpg extension before burning to a DVD. For some retarded reason, it doesn't recognize .avi extensions as something that it supports. The only minor niggle that I have with it is that the goobs at Magnavox didn't provide support for fast forward/fast reverse from the unit itself, you must use the included remote. You should be able to pick em up at Best Buy. Price: around $220

OK folks, I went out on a limb and bought a TV/Divx/mp4/dvd player off ebay and LOVE it. It was something around $220, a bargain I tells ya. here's the good, 7inch screen, Divx, DVD MP4, Battery TV TUNER!!! It literally does everything. Mine is by a company called Orbit, build quality is darn good for the price, the menu os could use some work tho, not very intuitive. My two gripes, about 10% of my mpeg 4 files will not play and the battery is a clip on not internal, so it adds about 30% to the units size. Oh ya, I forgot it has an FM transmitter too, so you can listen in on descent speakers, double oh ya, it plays mp3's too!! I like it if you can't tell , had it for about 3 months, still works great. Hooray for no-name chinese goods!! here's an ebay link, I don't remeber who I bought it from but you can do a search. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15055&item=5781832244&rd=1

I read this article months ago. However I did find another alternative in the LG DVP7772 http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=lglgdvp7772&store=&catid=4560
After a couple of trips I've been very happy with the purchase. The screen is a little contrasty and there are no audio controls beyond volume. I played some PAL DVD's from the UK without fuss and also hours of MP3's from a DVD-R. Esthetically I'd prefer black or grey to the chrome on white. Otherwise a solid product.
