Sony going after gray market PSP sellers, not buyers
Sony will cop to being a hard ass and cracking down on grey marketeers who are importing the PlayStation Portable to resell in the UK before the portable game console officially goes on sale there in September, but they are expressly denying the rumors that they're pressing those online retailers to give them their customer data so they can find out who exactly who has bought one. Not exactly sure what they'd do with the data even if they could get their hands on it, it's not like they'd be able to go around confiscating grey market PSPs anyway.

Uhhh... it's illegal to import a game console in the UK? I understand that console manufacturers don't WANT you to do it, but that doesn't make it "grey" market. Unless it's actually illegal, the most Sony could do would be to stop supplying the store with Sony products.
Not sure if they could do anything at all to the buyers.
Knock Knock "Open Up"
"Who is it?"
"SONY!!!"
"What do you want??"
"YOUR GREY IMPORT PSP"
"Erm No, F*ck off"
"OK BYE"
I bought mine of an eBay seller who had imported them already into the UK. It's sony's fault for posponing the relase date, I wasn't prepared to wait until September so I bought an import.
I'm sure there probably some laws or EU legislation against importers providing personal details about their customers to 3rd parties without consent. It will be hard for them to get customers details off eBay sellers anyway so I'm not worried.
Sony is obviously doing this because the PSPs which are going to be launched in September are going to have the newest firmware installed on them, thus reducing Homebrew by alot.
P.S: I also have an Imported Jap PSP which I stupidly updated to v.1.51
Heh, the adverts that google picked for the bottom of that article for me :) - 2 out of 3 offering to do what the article says sonys trying to stop. Good thing that over here in NZ there is nothing they can do about it :)

FOR ALL WORRIED ABOUT IMPORTATION PROSECUTION & CONFISCATION OF PSP CONSOLE/S BY SONY........
There is no law which can stop anybody importation of the PSP Console, as long as it has been done legitimately. Similarly if anyone has bought and paid for a PSP console legitimately, regardless where they bought it from - eBay, Market Stall, Auction etc - no one can bring prosecution against them. The actual fault is of the exporter whom Sony can prosecute, if their contract terms clearly dictate that they will not export these or other Sony products. Does Sony wish to spend millions fighting lawsuits, I don't think so, or do they wish to concentrate on their new PS3 promotion. People RELAX and enjoy playing your PSP Console instead of getting worried everytime there is a knock!!!!!!!! HAPPY PLAYING.
