More Motorola ROKR pics?
So MacDailyNews has some more, even better pics of that mysterious
iTunes phone that popped up courtesy of a Motorola
presentation yesterday. Yesterday this thing didn't have a name, but they dug up a second presentation that lists this
thing as the ROKR phone we've been
hearing about since February. They include a closeup shot of the left side of the phone, where you can see control
buttons, as well as a better shot of what looks to be some sort of scroll wheel embedded into the keypad.
[Thanks, Zep]

How the scroll wheel will work is beyond me
jg @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
this looks terrible, i'd take the nokia n91 over this any day.
Don @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
If it has an Apple logo on it and comes in an array of five colors and white, it'll sell like hot-cakes.
vianetman @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
I call BS. At least I hope it's BS.
wink @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
arg... with the controls on the left of the phone, the click wheel has lost its beauty... arg...
craig @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
I hope that scroll wheel is not capacitive - if so I think the phone is going to be a disaster. How many false positives (due to capacitive sensors inability to create a treshold for sensitivity) will the average person make? yikes!
TheCheeks @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
are theres specs on this? i dunno how an itunes phone would work or watever...
we'll just have to wait and see i guess

It seems obvious at least that Apple has had ZERO to do with the product design on this one. I do find it a little hard to belive that they would even liscense software to something this visually disgusting.
We can only hope that July 7th brings their "own" version of the iPhone, thats compatible with the same networks as the motorola one...
David Crowe @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
well one thing is for sure. it looks much nicer than the Treo.
JMac @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Ugliest phone ever, is this for real? Motorolla has finally been making decent looking products and this looks nothing like anything Apple. I don't buy it.
john @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
eeeenteresting! The colors are pukatronik, but I am intrigued by the interface. Certainly not what I was expecting.
Vic Matson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
My girlfriend say's it's hot!
sunz @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
I think it looks good from those shot .. pretty distinctive .. not necessarily my style and not elegant but look rugged and i think fits the "rokr" moniker .... imho
ChrisXS @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
The Nokia N90 is far far far beyond superior in terms of styling compared to this. I'd assume this ROKR has a microdrive in it, to put it in the same product category as the N90.
Dave @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
#14 Two lies in one post ... good job! :)
Lars Groeger @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
No way ! Someone wants to bait us !! This is all rubbish !
I mean look at the SLVR silver Candy Bar Mobile from Motorola.
Thats the one Apple would count on...it would fit perfectly to there actual Computer line.
ZSX @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Does this have a hard drive? If so, I still think the winner in the phones-with-HDD categroy is the Samsung SGH-i300 in terms of styling. The N90 is huge. And what's with the XBox colours on the ROKR?
stinky @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
i love that usb dealy in bottom left pic. that's green and hott. two t's of hottness. that's right.
Matthew B @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
$50 that circular part rotates to become a scroll wheel....look how deep the phone is...
aleitry @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
n91 -- not n90.
i agree, if this is the way the cell will look I would rather have the n91, with the w800 coming in as a close second.
Anthony @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
umm - how is one to tell what numbers they are pressing or what button is the answer key?
Anthony @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Oh - and why have a joystick when you have a scroll/click wheel? Why have all those buttons on the side for that matter?
Matt @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Matthew B (#22),
I thought so too, but if it were a dial, turning it would cause the middle column of buttons to move from their usual positions, making it very hard to dial. Let's hope that it's either capacitive, or it's not a dial.

Matthew B @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
rrr, not rotate that way, flip so there would have to be a half sphere cut into the phone....but i just read someplace that moto has a combo touchscreen/numberpad in another phone....seems more likely
some dude @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Please...can you say "prototype". The turd in the photo is as ugly as an XBOX, and was probably designed in 2001.
Rich Brome @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Who knows what this is. Could be the ROKR - or something else entirely. I do know this isn't the first iTunes phone - could be the 2nd, I guess.
I think this is a real Motorola phone, though. It all fits.
It has PEBL styling, and Motrola has promised more phones with the PEBL "design language".
It also has the scroll touchpad, which is technology from Cirque:
http://www.cirque.com/
...that Motorola has already used in the A668, and I know for a fact thet they have been looking at putting it in more of their phones - perhaps like this one.
It also looks like it has fabric sides, and lately Moto has been big on unusual finishes and materials.
Finally, that joystick is 100% identical to the one on the Moto V80 (which I hated, but oh well).
I think what I've seen so far looks hideous, but I think I mostly object to the colors. Purple and green?? ...someone in Schaumburg seriously needs to lay off the LSD. But I could imagine this being quite attractive in black or white.
locknroll @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Please let this be a concept...
PLEAASE!
Mart @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Apple wouldn't get involved in a project like an iTunes phone unless they had control of the design. With one of the top tech design departments in the world, and with Stevo obsessive about every last design detail, why would Apple let Moto or anyone else design the hardware? At least not the exterior?
billyboy @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
I can't get over all the negative comments - sure, it's not what people expect from Apple necessarily but it's kind of cool in its own right (besides the weird purple). It looks like it would be fun to use, with the audio controls and hold switch right where the fingers of your right hand would wrap around from the back, the iPod-like scrollwheel integrated with the numberpad, and you know this thing is smaller than it looks... it's actually not that bad.
mike @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
they may end up having white, silver and black versions.. with the buttons adapting to the 'screen saver'/visualizer.. so the green colour is not really permanent..
they'd be insane to not make it green..

I will buy this phone in a heartbeat, regardless of the color. And, it seems in opposition to the rest of the posters, I really dig the colors of what we've seen so far. I'd much rather have a phone with some "uniqueness" than a bland silver block. And the fabric on the sides adds some visual and tactile interest.
TZK @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
This sort of looks like a PEBL but, not a clamshall? Hard to tell. Im sure it will look sort of cool - though I am suprised it dosnt have any WHITE in it :) Maybe that will come as a special edition sold on the APPLE site later on :)
Jules @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Id buy it if the purple was replaced with silver and the rest with white. Or if the green was removed, a silver + black combo would look good (like the e398).
Miz221 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
LOL check out Julian Kay's blog! What a nerd!
Subhodip @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
Nothing wrong with the phone. Will buy it if it's price is descent. It looks better than the W800I.
David Thompson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:17AM
If the scrollwheel works like the iPod then that might be a revolutionary way to overlay two different control mechanisms on a phone face... I dig it.
