Engadget's Summertime Sand Sculpture Contest
Ok, we're willing to recognize a burgeoning trend and help it find its feet when and where. And since it's summertime, we want to see your mose amazing gadget sand sculptures! The rules are pretty simple, here ya go:
-
No Photoshops (duh)
-
Big minus points for iPods—they just too easy! (Ok, ok, if you can do it well, then do it really well!)
-
Bonus points go to specific devices (i.e. do a Panasonic Toughbook, and not just a generic laptop-shaped thing)
-
Email your entries (try to send at least two pictures) to engadget att gmail dott com with the subject line "Summertime Sand Sculpture Contest"
-
Deadline for submissions is 11:59PM, Sunday July 17. Don't say we didn't give you enough weekend hours!
-
Grand prize winner gets their sculpture featured on the site, and a little something summery-special! Like, say, an Oakley Thump?
Now get your pasty nerd butts to the beach this holiday weekend, and make friendly with the kids while you hog all
that sand making your 4x scale Atari joystick masterpiece!
P.S. Mind your manners when it comes to the nice lady above and her sand iPod, gentlemen. We know where you live!
Thanks to Mark for the pic.

She's hot!
Shocker! I first saw this picture with Mark in it... It is much better without him ;) At least he wasn't wearing his Tron costume.
What a fun idea. Keep on keepin' on, Engadgeteers!
alright. I'm heading to hawaii for this one!! heheh.. okay, actually, I am going to hawaii. It just gives me more incentive to make sand stuff. lol.
I don't care about sand-sculptures... what's her name???
There's an iPod in that pic? Oh, yeah. Sorry, I was distracted.
Anyway, she's very cute. And I'm very married. Oh, and - look - there's an iPod in that picture. (Sorry, got distracted again. ;)
Can I make a sand sculpture of HER???
man.. I would f*ck the sh*t outta that iPod
There is an image of an ipod there?
My goodness, she's scrumptious!
Uhh, July 12th is a Tuesday... not a Sunday.
"Uhh, July 12th is a Tuesday... not a Sunday."
They must have meant, "11:59PM, Sunday July 12, 2009". After all, they did say "Don’t say we didn’t give you enough weekend hours!". 4 years of 'weekend hours' is enough to produce some reeeaaaaally geeky sand sculptures, I guess.
an Oakley Thump??
But you guys keep making fun of the thing. What kind of a prize is something you dislike?
It's like, hey guys, be really creative for us and we'll give you this bag of newspapers. Sure, newspapers are infinitely useful, but these are all OLD news papers, so YMMV.
I don't know what I'm talkin' about.
Wait... so she's not one of the prizes?
Submit your dullest sand ipod creation. As long as there is a bikini clad model next to it your entry will be permitted.
OMG... I guess no one who reads engadget has ever seen a girl before...
is it going to be posible to see all the entrys?
cause i want it to plezzzzzzzzzz
OMG you geeks!! she just a freakin' girl, get a tan, lose some weight, brush your teeth, be a gentlemen and find one at school/work/beach. there are 3 BILLION of them on the planet, have you not run into one before, or are you the kind of geek who goes to CalTech and needs remedial bathing?
is it just me, or does she look like jen garner?
She's very cute, until you zoom in. Then she's extremely cute.
She's got good taste..
#15 and #17 are clearly insecure about... something, and overcompensating. Dudes, whereever there is an image of a nice girly, guys are gonna make a fuss, no matter their ability with the ladies. So give it a rest.
#16 and #18 are clearly insecure about... something, and overcompensating. Dudes, whereever there is an image of a nice girly, guys are gonna make a fuss, whether they're hopeless geeks or mr ladykiller. So give it a rest, you're embarrasing yourselves.
whoops! I posted #23, went to post a retraction/correction and managed to get confused with my confirmation email and screw up... I was referring to 16 and 18 only .... I'm just making it worse, huh? I'll shut up now.
Clearly, this is this chicks 15 minutes of fame. So, lets see more of her, more clearly. (Am I making myself clear?)
Hmmmmmm........
How much you want for that bod?
All 'sandy' entries should have her accompaniying the in a photoshoot, preferably she be in the foreground, in the middle of the picture and doing different poses. For example the picture featured here is sub-par because shes in the background ... tsk tsk tsk the quality here is dropping! hello!!
So when did Engadget become inhabited by 14 year old boys?
hey, this page is a geek magnet. put a good looking lady in a bikini up on it and every geeks brain have to fire up that part that have not been used since before puberty ;)
You know that Oakley Thump sucks meat pipe, do you not?
#28 -
Right from the frigg'n start.
28: "Since when did Engadget become inhabited by 14 year old boys?"
Hey! I bet most of those kind of comments are made by way older people.
And we do want to see entry pics!
she's not like really that cute or great looking.... sorry guys, but she's not. I wish i had sand here in Denver, I'm kind of lacking a beach to make a sand sculpture out of
Neat sand sculpture and all, but as an single adult heterosexual male, I barely notice it with her in the picture. She's a beauty.
so what happened to showing off the entry images?
I just did mine in Santa Barbara, about 200 feet south of State Street... if you live there, it's prolly still there, right near the water... unless of coarse some jackass kid jumped all over it... don't make me have to kick some ass :|
it's pretty crap, and I took the pics with a disposable camera (witch I need to develop), but i'll enter them prolly 2 marrow...
compotition dates changed mite give mine another go see if i ca ndo better
I think that whatever item's sculpture wins the contest, that should be what is given away! For instance,if you were to sculpt an Xbox, you could win an Xbox. Then again, maybe the reason why you're able to sculpt it so well is because you already own it. I don't know. Either way, anything to convince computer nerds into going outside is a good thing. We probably don't get nearly enough sunlight! There seems to be a large shadow cast over the girl's entire body,so it's not the greatest pic. However, maybe that's because it's designed to show her sculpture. Plus, women won't respond well to you oggling over them. There comes a point where it's perceived as creepy. Just go up and introduce yourself.
And the winner was a "sand-Aibo" What in the bloody moon is that anyways?
The chick makes the picture - no doubt.
