AVI player for PSP
Yep, it's just the very beginning of this — there's still no sound — but Myungwoon go has released an AVI player for
the PSP. It'll play back 320 x 240 (and possibly
other resolutions) DivX files, and if anyone tests it with XviD, let us know your results in the comments.
[Thanks, Ian Nott]

i wonder if it will strech/blow up the video?
Here's the deal as I see it:
This homebrew/exploit stuff is eclipsing the "legit" offerings from Sony just on sheer scale.
Despite Sony's best efforts to tightly control the PSP, some extremely talented coding wizards are learning to bend the hardware to their collective will.
The result: The PSP is transformed from a comparatively sterile gaming/media device into a personal, portable gaming LIBRARY of titles from all kinds of consoles!
Admittedly, some of the Home Brew stuff and a few of the emulations stull need tweaking, but considering the hurdles, this is nothing less than a breakthrough for portable gaming.
Bummer it's so taboo and illegal, because it's the hottest thing happening on the PSP -and in poratble gaming- right now.
Hottest thing happening on the PSP at least.
maybe sony's just playing smart: why invest time and money in development of psp apps when you can just sit back, relax, and watch the psp community do it for you? ;)
What's the difference between Xvid and Divx besides XviD being open source?
As I understand they both come from project Majo and are based on the same code. If so both should work the same.
If someone has more info on differences or wich one is better please chime in.

Well, that's not bad, but the resolution on the video is decent. This is why I wanted to buy a PSP because eventually they are going to be able to do everything with it!! Now if that price just dropped a bit....
Well, I have a Dell Axim x50v Pocket PC and it plays videos in 640x480 and the quality is DVD quality when playing AVI files. Plus I have emulators so that'll do for now
is it worrying that I could care less about the PSP, but immediately recognised the anime as Cardcaptor Sakura?
"this is nothing less than a breakthrough for portable gaming."
Except for the GP32, which did this YEARS ago, sans brand name and commercial games. Plus it was an open platform.
My thoughts exactly 'Edz'. The GP32 dun been there and done that.
Albeit, since the GP32 uses smart media cards, even memory stick allows for a bit more flexibility...
Trouble is it doesn't have the chic and image of a Sony product. To bad people are so hung up on image. The GP32 is a nice bit of kit. And if it had been a bigger international seller, I'm sure an updated version would be even better.
Just too bad...
Anyone heard plans on a VLC port?
And from the sheer mass of GP32 owners, it was obviously a major success. Whaaa?
Nice of you to mention a years old failed gaming system, but thanks for playing.
So.. does this mean the PSP is more versital then the DS? WAs that a silly question? :)
i have a gp32 and its great but the psp just has so much more power, the resolution on the videos is better, and its mainstreem so its bound to have more people developing for it that and the gp32 has less than perfect sound
So.. does this mean the PSP is more versital then the DS? WAs that a silly question? :)
Considering that the DS also includes the more hackable GBA, it is just as "versital" as the PSP in the homebrew turf.
@#14
wow maybe you should pull your head out of your @$$ and take a look around because almost anything you can do on the gba can be done better on the psp and the psp is capable of doing a hell of a lot of things the gba cant the same goes for the ds ...unless you were joking in wich case disregard that
why is this so much better than just putting it mpeg4?
someone explain why this isnt pointless, seriously
It won't be pointless if it means movies can be played at full res.
Yah PSP pron at last!
Next someone will make a SCUMM port so we can play the old DOS classics like monkey island and maybe broken sword; full throttle?
TZK asked about versatility Yupster, not power.
