Engadget Podcast 033 - 07.04.2005
The podcast took a week off, but we're back in action and a lot's been going down! This week we take on the leaked shots of the iTunes phone (will Apple please just sue us already?), fool around with the Samsung i730, whine about the iPod color, and take a trip down memory lane with Palm/PalmSource/PalmOne. Oh, and we also launched Engadget Spanish and Engadget Japanese. Tune in Tokyo!
Hosts: Peter Rojas and Ryan Block
Format: 48:22, 11MB, MP3

LISTEN

Woah. What a coincidence. I was just right now playing with the Podcast feastures of new iTunes and my iPod, when I decided to hit "reload" in the Engadget browser tab and what comes up? A new Engadget Podcast. Bummer.
Unfortunately, it's not yet in the RSS feed. Hope it's only a matter of minutes, I was about to leave office and would like to listen to it :)
Sorry Julien, couple momentary technical issues with the Podcast. Hope you enjoy!
Best,
Ryan
I used the http://www.engadget.com/rss.xml, because it updates quicker, but everything worked like a charm.
So now that my iPod is synced, I can go home and listen to it. Thanks a lot!
You guys mention that the iPod should have wireless headphones... well think about the effect that would have on their entire iPod marketing campaigns...
I've never bothered to listen to the Podcasts, as I read the site regularly -- why would I need jeans-too-tight-black-hair-hipsters read stuff to me a week after I read it on the site?
But, I gave it a try (dragged the regular RSS feed into iTunes 4.9, the feed in the iTMS is apparently very behind?) and I'm impressed -- you guys actually have real information and commentary on everything from the past week. Good work, now I am less suspicious that podcasts are for bloggers by bloggers.
The one thing regarding Apple that no one has seemed to mention (and if they have, I havn't seen it here) is the Sirius deal. Remember back that Apple was rumored to be in talks with Sirius and everyone hoped that the next iPod would recieve Sirius broadcasts (unlikely).
Most likely, Apple and Sirius are working together to set up paid podcasts of the Sirius content. Howard Stern's daily show on the web 10 minutes after it ends, available for download for $0.25 or free for Sirius customers? That would make a killing; and Apple could apply the same DRM that they do for regular iTMS purchases to 'prevent' piracy, etc.
iTunes 4.9 still! has not got podcast 33 - i have dragged & dropped the link "engadget podcast feed" and i have clicked on the "itunes" link after that - no results... help?!
#6: I have the exact same problem. I was reading elsewhere that iTMS caches the feeds and the podcasts on their own servers...to do what, I don't know. Anyway, has anyone noticed that if you look at the Engadget feed in iTMS, there are TWO copies of each episode.
Looks like the Apple folks are still working out some technical issues.
heres the funny thing about this site.... whenever a tech budd of mone fonds it after i send tehm stories linking back here they swear as if they are the ones that discovered you site... its kinda funny to actually...
oh and btw, as i write this engadget is number 20 on the top 100!!! btw, whats with the iTMS on the slow uptake of #33???
i noticed the doubling of podcasts... ridiculous. btw: those who see more than 1 engadget podcast, choose the one with the author as peter rojas - not the others which have author as unknown. still no engadget 33!

Frankly, I do not think that Apple has anything to do with it, but rather the Engadget XML file ist to "blame". However it is certainly annoing that there are several Engadget Podcats listed in the iTunes directory. The ony that is linked in the article has doubled description, there are no descriptions or covers and podcast 33 is missing in the "original" feed.
Somewhat dissents with your usal perfectionism, guys ;)
Nah, thanks for giving us the podcast.
Disappointed that this podcast didn't have chapter markers for iTunes, but a great podcast as usual.

Still not in iTunes. You guys should really fix up your feed -- if that's the real problem.
Hey guys,
Actually, this is really a problem with the way Apple implemented our feeds on their site. We've been working with them to have it fixed. Thanks for your patience!
Best,
Ryan
iPod / AirPort musings:
I just upgraded my eMac (1.25gHz SD model) to AirPort Extreme, and went to get the eMac DVI-to-RCA/S-Vid cable.
Interestingly, Apple demands that in order to use this on some lower-ended systems you have an AirPort Extreme card - two totally different, unrelated processes.
Why? No idea.
HOWEVER. With iTunes now supporting Video, I can drag all my QuickTime compliant videos and stream the audio with a single video cable doing the work for me - in some cases in full dolby digital.
AirPort Express 2 - with remote (as referenced in some iTunes alerts) would see the Mac make a very holistic leap into a Media Serving market.
Make that remote a touchscreen? Internal storage? Capable of playing the media by itself, not just a bridge?
Perhaps much like its beginnings, iTunes could see itself turn into a DVD Ripping software (yeah, yeah, the MPAA would explode into fits of litigation). Apple have very quietly, over a long period of time, put things into place and developed them in tandem and seperately... I think a mass-convergence of a few of their technoligies and how they interact is the next step.
Still unable to get the latest episode of the podcast through your feed (either directly or through iTunes' directory). The only way at the moment to hear it is by downloading the MP3 manually. Any chance of updating your xml feed?
I'm having the same probelms with itunes and your feed. I tried adding to manually and it still didn't work. I think it is your feed though becuase if you click on the link in Safari RSS, you can see everything (w/o the enclosures) and i do not see this podcast
I really want to listen to the most recent Podcast but when I click the update button in iTunes it doesn't list the newest one for me to download, please fix this ASAP.
How come this podcast isn't coming up in iTunes?! Anyways have you seen the New Music Tuesdays and PodFinder podcast? You should make the engadget podcast like that where when you scroll through on your ipod you can skip through and know what you're skipping too.
Also, another thing both those podcasts do is display different album art for the different sections. You could do this too, but with pictures of the devices you are talking about for those of us with iPod photos, I mean color. Then Instead of getting off the couch to look at pictures of what your talking about online, or on google images, we can see little pictures of it on the iPod! Please mention me if you do this. :-) Love your podcasts, keep 'em coming.
~Ryan~
Hey guys-
A bit of constructive criticism.. You have to stop fighting for the mic. You are constantly stepping on each other getting louder and louder. Its great to hear the differing opinions, but give each other space. Otherwise I love the show and content!
chapters would be great. is it possible to maybe integrate this in the next one?
I want to hear the scrapped podcast. I need more Engadget-y chat goodness, darnit.
We're gonna work on the chapters in the future, so keep an eye out.
Adam,
Point taken, but we literally are just trying to go for straight up conversational--we definitely don't want to overproduce, and by no means have a script. I'll see if we can make it more listener-friendly, though.
Carlos,
Trust me, it was pretty bad--we'd been working all day, and were totally out of it. Maybe we'll air a bloopers reel one day.
Best,
Ryan
Good to hear chapters are coming, it's one of the nicest features of iTunes and podcasts, not that I want to skip over stuff, I especially enjoy your carrier talk (as I work for a european one)
keep up the good work
iPod color has always been out.. it is basically the iPod photo..
"FM Tuner and mike input is years overdue"???
"Everybody wants it"??
Hardly... I dont even see the point of having it.. I have an ipod to listen to music.. there's a reason why it has so much storage space for songs. Who even wants to listen to poor quality radio on their ipod??? And even crappier a microphone?? on the ipod?? why would you want that. Adding these features would just ruin the image of the ipod.
No one cares about all those "FEATURES"!.. come on.. who actually even uses some of them now... Games, calendar, contacts etc
"Everybody wanted to see wireless functionality"....?????
umm... no... You guys fail to realize that this is still the fourth generation ipod.. there was no upgrade.. they havent done anything new except remove the monochrome 20gb ipod from their lineup.. i mean come on! "ipod stagnating" they've been coming up with a new image for the ipod just about every year in addition to introducing new ipods such as the ipod mini and shuffle...
iTUNES 5.0 = iTunes V (Roman Numeral for FIVE)
V as in VIDEO... possibly hinting a video ipod release soon??? maybe....
Apple "Resistant"??? I dont think so... it takes time... you cant just keep throwing new ipods in peoples faces...
I have one request; please boost the audio level of the podcast. I've been listening for quite a while and can usually make out one voice better than the other. Lately, the whole show has been a bit lower than is needed.
As I'm sure is the case with a lot of other lsiteners, I listen on the go, that means the audio has to compete with traffic noise, in-office conversations, air conditioner noise, etc.
Thanks!
