Siemens SK65 Burlwood - those bite marks are a feature
We still don't get the appeal of wooden cellphones, but we've got to at least give Siemens some cred for trying to
make their woody a little more interesting than the standard sleek polished
luxury phone. The upcoming Limited Edition SK65 Burlwood
phone is encased in what the company says is wood from the thuya tree, and each phone is unique — some may even have
marks from animal bites. The phone will also have all the standard
SK65 features, including swiveling keyboard and built-in Blackberry software. This isn't Siemens' first wooden
phone; there was an SL55 woody released last year. We do believe, however, that this is the first phone on the market
with animal bites being promoted as a selling point (take note: if this sells, you may be able to flog that phone your
dog chewed up after all).

Actually #1 and engadget, there is an appeal. I would like one as would a lot of the people I work with (showed them this post and asked them what they thought). To truly find out though the phone would have to be marketed better. I have never actully seen one for sale at any wireless store, only really bad fake wood cases made of plastic. Also, the price is usually way to much.
Target market: really old executives with far too much time on their hands.
The wooden iPod is still cool, however.
Huh? Executives? I find wooden accessories quite cool (though too expensive for me to afford). It gives the device a feeling of old world quality - something lacking in many products made today. Heck, even a bakelite cell phone would feel higher quality than some of todays plastic models (yes, bakelite is plastic, but I consider it a thermoset...and above ABS).
remember those old nokias that had the wood grain in the mid 90s. if you had one of those you were blingin! i like the wooden ipod as well.
I'd prefer wood cases over metal or plastic. If the wood was 'sustainably harvested' and the price 200 or less, I'd buy it. But since people turn over cell phones so often now, I doubt such products would take off.
It's bad enough there are not enough recycling programs set up for cell phones and other gadgets that they now they have to cut down trees for fashion statements.
I agree with #8. This is the worst of both worlds. Some dude is going to throw it away someday, and if, by chance, there is a facility to deal with e-waste instead of sending it to the landfill, they'll throw out the wood anyway. No prob, it'll biodegrade, right? Hmmm...probably not. It's probably been preserved anyway. Why cut trees for your phone? Really. They don't mix. Wood is used for structure, for heat, for paper, not for bleeding edge electronics. If you can make a phone look like wood or you want faux walnut paneling in your car, great, but the amount of trees you need to get high quality, non-knotted wood in blocks large enough for a phone doesn't seem to make sense to me. Why not use it to make a home. There is a reason there are bite marks on the wood anyway. Something lived there. - I guess it just feels like the equivalent of wearing mink fur or something. - If you want the natural look, get a leather case to match your alligator shoes, silk shirts and wool pants. You'd better not think of wearing a polyester blend with this phone. - Okay, I feel better. I guess it's the gear head in me that thinks phone features are worth more than the color of plastic or wood that encases the phone. You can make a phone trendy by the shape, the curves, the feel. What a waste.
Ahhh... So that IS a woody in your pocket!
Are you still happy to see me?
Yeah, I can imagine all the "woody" jokes made for their last wood phone -- especially from a company named "Siemens."
Fishes,
narco.
Ugh, two words you naysayers...
STEAM. PUNK.
Retro is in. Deal with it.
Stylish....Impressive...Creative...Unique
It's an amazing and cheap hack for the iPod. I would take a kick at it however it requires to much work for my lazy self...
Plus, I prefer a nice metallic color over wood...However, the device does look GOOD in wood...
Once again, I give kudos to the inventor...
nobody in their right mind would buy this shit anyways, seimens is getting out of the cellphone industry, consider this a final 'huzzah' while the door hits them in the ass.
also, i fail to see how wood finish is both "luxury" and "retro".
that's like saying a polyesther suit is "luxurious"... when infact it just happens to be a fire hazard... the same could be said about this phone.

All these bitchin' wood products (this phone, that iPod, and that company making wooden keyboards, mouses, and monitors) makes me want to get off my lazy bum and fashion a wooden case for my cell phone. And my Game Boy. But probably not my Game Boy, since it has those damn proprietary three pronged screws holding it together. Either way, it'd be fun, since I'm wasting my father-son carpentry skills as we speak. And I'll get on hackaday. :)
Limited edition? Cos noone'll buy it.
What would go better with that wooden iPod, than a pair of those wooden JVC headphones...

Just think about it. Big office. Nice veiw of the city. Big cherry wood desk. Wood cell phone lying on desk next to expensive Mont Blanc pen. Who else would want or have the money to waste on one? If they make it, somebody will buy it.
