The viliv P1 portable media player
Ok, there are iPod knockoffs, and there are
iPod knockoffs—we've seen our fair share,
trust us—but you gotta love a device that not only rips it off as such, but does so with a 30GB drive, 4-inch QVGA
screen, FM tuner, line in, video out, CF slot, and support for just about every codec you ever heard of (DivX, Xvid,
MPEG-1/2/4, SWF, ASF, WMV, MP3, WMA, OGG, AC3, and AAC). Did we mention it's only 6.3 x 2.9 x 0.7-inches? Did we
mention it's Korean? So keep your pants on.

Anything that has a white scroll wheel looks like an ipod to you guys. It isn't even shaped like one!
is it gonna make it to the us?
Damn it! I was in Korea 2 months ago, I guess I have to go back to pick one up.
Darnit.
(Putting pants back on...)
does anyone even care about the ipod at this point. if apple comes out with a player that plays video THEY will be knocking off everyone else.
"It isn't even shaped like one!"
It's, like, totally in landscape mode vs. iPod's portrait.
Keep my pants on?! Damnit I already had them off.
If you're going back to Korea DMF, I'll give you a crapload of money. Bring me back one and a bunch of obscure video games LOL.
So, are these guys blatantly endorsing P2P/Torrents and copyright infringement?
Why on earth would they chose to display the image from ROTS on the display when they know the movie has not even made it to DVD yet and the only place to download a DivX bootleg is off of the internet.
Smart marketing group they've got there...
"Why on earth would they chose to display the image from ROTS on the display when they know the movie has not even made it to DVD yet and the only place to download a DivX bootleg is off of the internet."
Most marketting materials are meant to last some time so the product doesn't look stale. The ROTS DVD is due on Nov 1 2005 which isnt that far away.
The one thing that usually keeps me away from things like this is the lack of one codec or another. With all that this thing plays... damn.
price.. What is the price? I'm currently using my PSP for watching movies, but my 512mb duo doesn't really hold much.. 30gb HD sounds hott.. but i think to myself, if an 20 gb ipod costs 250, how much will a 30gb MOVIE PLAYER cost? ahh
Q is: is this thing for real or just a computer rendered model somebody rendered with a wishlist of specs?
(and thus not related to any company or anything that'll actually see production)
This thing looks really cool. I like its widescreen and its proposed playing ability. I think it would be great for storing porno, hentai, and sharing such things with friends.
OK I will keep my pants on. For now.
I second JGs opinion. Apple is going to have to come out with something really amazing if they expect to have some kind of impact on the media player market... then again, I still lean towards them never coming out with one at all.
#12 It is widescreen (4in)
#11 It is real. Here is the actual company website http://www.pmpevent.com/
It also states that it can play Macromedia Flash Games.
When I get home I will be able to translate everything...most importantly where to buy and the cost.
I've got a few PDA's already that have QVGA resolution IMHO a media player has to have at least VGA res 640x480. But since even most Portable DVD Players are Widescreen you would think PMP's would go wthis route
I have a PVP....it's called a notebook computer. It plays every codec out there, can be upgraded to play any new codec out there, and can handle any and all DRM'd content. Oh yeah, and the screen's big enough that you don't feel like you're watching a movie/show through a keyhole. And you can actually get work done on it.
And what about .mov?
I havent seen any Personal Video Player that supports Mov
I did a quick translation with Google's Korean beta and a currency conversion. At the highest price on their survey, which is on the homepage (409,000 Korean "won" dollars, it equates to roughly $387 USD. Not bad if that's the price!
Looks like a cross between iPod and PSP.
fuk..why don't engadget make online shop?
Information update. It does not support WMV or ASF files.
Here is some interesting information. They are having a sweepstakes to give 200 of them away for 30 days, but then you have to return after the 30 days and write a review about it. If you then choose to buy it, they will give you 50% off. But the sweepstakes expires 7/21/2005, limited to 200 people. Winners are announced 7/29/2005
BTW..you have to have a korea ID number (i.e. korea social security number) to regester. :(
There is no current price. They are actually taking a poll to see how much people are willing to play. So far the results are as follows:
61% people will pay $349
13% people will pay $369
7% people will pay $389
7% people will pay $409
12% people will pay more
Thats it for now.
Here is a little user controlled demo of the player. It's Flash based UI is awesome!

Does anyone know if this is coming stateside? and what is the price? Also does anyone else find it weird that this is the companies only product?
Hi. glad to see your comments..
Viliv's price is about 350 usd in korea.
that include cradle, earphone, remocon(remote controller),wireless remocon and viliv.
ok. I'm korean. and I'm one of developer of viliv. but I can't any comment about viliv's perfomence until it will be perpect.
"dmf" comment about poll for price. but it depends on exchange rate. :-)
and yukyoung is going to make online shop.
That price poll in #23's comment is actually in South Korean Wons.
349,000 KRW = $335 USD
369,000 KRW = $355 USD
389,000 KRW = $375 USD
409,000 KRW = $395 USD
But that's not all! The 17.5% VAT tax is included, so if this is ever available to the United States, it is likely that this tax will be removed, as U.S. citizens do not have to pay it. So, from the point of view of one who does not have to pay the VAT, the poll is actually:
$285
$302
$319
$336
But remember that this is just a poll, and the actual retail price may be more.
OK...I'm new to the site and the Viliv. I'm in love with it, but alas, I'm American, NOT Korean, and I don't anticipate going there any time soon....though I don't know what good buying a Korean version of the thing would be for me!
That aside, the last comment made here is from JULY 2005!. That's some time ago, with NO update. Is this thing going to come to the U.S.? Are the 'surveys' and 'polls' done and the marketing people ready to make some REAL cash in The States?
If anyone can provide some kind of link where I might be able to actually purchase an English/American version of this thing, I'd be REALLY happy!
Hey does anyone know where i can buy this..WITHOUT GOING TO KOREA...or do you know of any other pvps this size. thanks for all the help!
