Hands-on with the LG VX8100
Haven't had as much time to play around with it as we would have liked, but we managed to get our hands on the VX8100, LG's new EV-DO capable flip phone which Verizon popped out earlier this week.
Note the dedicated music player control buttons.

Awesome! Thanks Tycho.

I went to the Verizon store to confirm the last post and it's true, I got an updated vx8100 and it does include an mp3 player.
Picked up the 8100 yesterday at a verizon store and asked the sales rep about the new firmware. he confirmed that that all the ones in their stock had the current version. no i need to pick up a mini sd card.
Right on! I had my firmware updated yesterday and there is a new My_MP3 folder on my mini SD card and my outside buttons work. Press and hold the Play/Pause button to bring up the list or go through as described above. Much better.
BitPim allowed me to back up over 250 phone numbers and it 'sees' the mp3 files but I cannot managed the files with the app. Bummer.
The firmware update also addresses a camera bug and a couple of other issues.
The 8100 is now much closer to the phone I was hoping for. Good luck all!

Does anyone know if the phone can take a 1gb card? I want to get a decent-sized memory card in there for the mp3 player but I know that some things have limited expandability.
my sales rep told me not to go above 512 on the mini sd card. -- but speaking of listening to mp3's... how is everyone listening? is there a special set of headphones somewhere? i can't imagine just using the built in speakers
About the mp3 player on the 8100... no need to change the file extension with the new firmware edition. It would be helpful for newbies who happen here to have a little more info as to how to access music from the mini card.
On the main menu on the phone go to tools, then to 'system', then 'manage memory', then 'save options', then 'sounds'. Select 'card memory'
I looked and looked on the internet for instructions and finally got a guy who works for Verizon who taught me how.
Other than that, if you have a card reader you can jut drag and drop mp3 files to it. I don't have a cable or jabra so this works for me. My regular mp3 player uses the regular san disk so I got a mini with adapter to use in both.
There is a special set of headphones you can get at any retailer of this LG VX8100 phone. I have them, and they work great. My one and only question about them is why one wire (left ear) is waaaay longer than the other for some odd reason. I am sure there is reason behind the design, but it's not mentioned anywhere on the packaging material. Anyway, so in answer to your question, yes, there are headphones. Cool thing is, if u get a call, they double as hands free kit, cuz there is a mic on the wire as well. Music stops, take your call, end your call, music continues.

T9word mode can be set as your default. Go to Messaging, then click the left soft key button (top left) to get into the settings mode. Then press #7 to go into Entry Mode and you can make your selection there.
For Zack, the short wire is so that the microphone ends up somewhere near your mouth. I didn't like it at first, but have gotten used to it.
YEah on the 8100, how do you get MP3's onto it? Is there an additional purchase required...and then what do you do after that?
For converting mpg, wmv, avi, etc. to 3GP so that I can watch them on my LG VX-8100 phone, I use the FREEWARE app "Super" v.1.811 (http://fever.link.free.fr/SUPER.html). It's easy to use and I leave all of settings on default and the movies look and sound great on my phone. Enjoy!

I just got the LG 8100. Is there any way to set it to "vibrate then ring". My old LG4400 used to be able to do that. A download, an upgrade, anything?
I am thinking about returning my e815 for the VX8100. However, I wanted to know if there is a way to download ringtones from a separate site other than Verizon? On my Old VX6000 I can; and also on the e815. But as much as I love LG, I don’t want to have to pay the same price for a ringtone that I would pay for a song.
Can the VX-8100 have more than 10 contacts in
a group? I have "Company", "Family", and "School" groups... but... what if my company has more than 10 employees... or my family has more than 10 members... or my school has more than 10 students in it????
Stone (#49),
You can change the entry mode to default T9 by going into the messages menu, hitting the settings (upper left-hand) button, and scrolling down to entry mode.
If I get the cable to connect the phone too my laptop computer how do I get my laptop online? This is with the new verizon firmware on the phone, V4. You can email me at daniel.bolander@gmail.com
