Sony Ericsson K750i coming to the States

So it looks like the Sony Ericsson K750i
is heading Stateside pretty soon — Sonyericsson.com just added the phone to the U.S. section of their website. To
recap, it's sporting a 2 megapixel camera, records video in 3GP, plays back MPEG4/MP3/3GP/WAV, and has 32MB on board
memory expandable via (good ol' Sony) Memory Stick Duo. Just between us, we recently got our grubby mitts on this
phone, and… it's pretty sweet. One caveat: there's no standard 1/8-inch audio out jack, so you're stuck with the
supreme joy of paying through the nose for extra "accessories" if you need to direct your audio anywhere besides the
stock headphones it ships with (good ol' Sony!).
[Thanks, AFD]

all in all, even with the rumored firmware flash --- wouldn't the w800i be a better choice?
To Aleitry:
The K750i and w800i are the exact same thing, the only diff is the firmware and the bundled memory.

That is incorrect David. According to BengalBoy's review and pictures, the W800 uses a *significantly* lower quality screen in order to keep costs down.
has nothing out of the ordinary on it so i guess it will just be another adition to the ever growing collection of camra-video-mp3player-mpeg4player-phone that just happens to make texts and talks :/
Old news...it's been on the SE US website for over a week...and that doesn't mean it's coming to the States...this phone does not have the 850 band, so no US carrier will pick it up. Case in point, the Z600...it is indeed on the SE US website, but it was never carried in the US. We will not see the K750i here in the mainstream, which is nice for those of us who like our exclusive phones ;-)
so the w800i is worse [lcd] and not special because there are several other phones that do the same, but it might come to the states ....
aside from smart phones, what other phones do all that? not being sarcastic, really asking. If I can find something that is already out that allows me to take 2mp pix, play mp3s using my shures, playback video, BT, card slot, BT - i'll buy it now.
otherwise, I'm gonna wait for w800 or n91.
The biggest thing that the k750i has going for it is that the interface for the music player Does Not Suck, which includes the dedicated buttons for when you're not actively using the media player app. I mean, various Series 60 phones have been taking pictures, playing music, using bluetooth and boasting expandable memory for a good long while.
Let's hope the k750i is only the first in a long line of convergence devices that does more than one of its many functions well.
Also, it's fairly easy to modify the hands-free kit that it ships with to end in a 3.5mm jack instead of the sony earbuds, all it takes is a steady hand and a small soldering iron: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=654198&page=1&pp=15 which is pretty cool.
Phone has been available through US dealers for some time now, even Tigerdirect carries it...
Congratulations! I had the k750i for some time now and it's by far the best phone I have ever held in my hand.

hey wille, are you the one from k750i.org? if so, finish the review man.
The real beauty of this phone is:
- 2Mpixel imager
- Autofocusing lens
- Takes decent pics
- Expandable memory
- MP3 Player
- Small candybar phone
Look for some sample photos in the reviews to see what I mean. If your carrier supports GSM (tmobile) you can find this phone at myworldphone for $375 right now.
No, it's no me aleitry. But you can reach Mathias at "mathias at k750i.org" :)
i modded my nokia 6230 to allow any headphones, it was pretty easy and the greenboard circuit inside the button/mic on the cable they provide has the audio left and right marked. i love being able to plug some sweet headphones into my 1gig of mp3s on my phone.

Since when was 1/8th inch socket a standard?
There's a 3.5mm standard. Like most phones, the SE has a 2.5mm socket. A 2.5 to 3.5mm adaptor costs a couple of groats. If that's 'paying through the nose' then remind me to never ask you to pay for the next round of beer.
You can always buy a set of HPM-70 headphones to solve the 3.5 mm jack problem, but then again you can't charge it and listen to music at the same time. Still the hottest phone out though.
thx for the info alan. Now I'm considering venturing out into Long Island to get this thing.
from the rest of the comments, I guess no one would consider the n91 as drastically more attractive? looking at the n91's battery numbers and weight, I guess I don't much either. If people like it as much as reported, the n91 will be like a 1st gen ipod = gonna take a few iterations for it to kick ass.
Shaun - NO 2.5 mm jack. K750i headphones attach to the FastPort on the bottom.. Later this year SE will be releasing a new headset (for the w800i, but can be purchased sep.) that will include a 3.5mm jack adapter. For the record, w800i has a better MP3 player (can sort by genre, artist, etc.), but there are several sites that will flash your k750 to w800 for you. K750 has higher quality components (according to previews of the w800 that have leaked onto the web), so it's the way to go. Finally, w800i is *supposed* to have better sound quality, but basically *everyone* who has flashed their k750 to a w800 reports that the sound quality improves, meaning that it's a firmware trick.
Thanks for that info Dan. LINK PLEASE!! One point - you can sort by artist on the K750i, but not genre as far as I can see.
Regarding comparisions to the W800, an advantage of the W800 is that it allows for playback to continue while the phone is switched off.. apparently. Though I'm not sure why you'd want to do that.
I wonder which carrier will carry this phone?
T-Mobile will have an american version of the K750i called the D750i, however I doubt that a true K750 will be picked up by carriers. Very rarely are higher end SE phones supported by the wireless companies in the US...just look at the p800, p900, p910i, s700i (yes, there is the s710...but still)
America just gets the shit end of phones most of the time...
I've browsed SE's site in the past, and something confuses me (this isn't necessarily relevant). Can anyone tell any difference between the S710a and the S700i besides the color?

Sorry about the long URL's. :

s700a uses the 850 mhz band over the 900mhz band in the s700i...also, s700 has an fm radio while s710 supports EDGE instead...
You can use the HPM-70 handsfree to give you a standard 3.5mm socket.

I saw this 3 weeks ago at a Vegas test thing. It's not that much bigger than the T-637 that I currently have. I might have to trade up if it gets to Cingular.
Any idea how long this may take to come here? Im looking for a new phone and while the Razr v3 looks nice nothing beats the features in this phone but I cant wait much longer.
Why does sony insist on a "candy bar" form factor?
I'm waiting for a good clamshell phone from them...
How does one obtain these products in large quantities when they're not in North America? Anyone know of a legit distributer?
Hey,
I got to play around with one of there a few days ago at work, ( virgin Mobile Australia ) and really dig it. Realy quick and smooth through the menu's, screen clarity is wicked the the camera seems to shit over any thing else I've seen. Expandable memory is great ( pitty its memory stick but they arnt as expensive as they used to be )
I would happoly reccomend this phone. especialy over things like the V3 Razor.....
cheers

I'm an IT writer in Brazil and I've got the chance to play with one as well here in Rio. This phone ROCKS! I've had it for two weeks, and I've never seen a cell get so fast to the music -- you just press a button, and voil? And great sound, too.
Plus, it has the best camera I've seen in any phone, bar none. If you want to see how its pictures look, I've uploaded a few to Flickr:
http://k750i.notlong.com/
The only thing that keeps me from saying this is the best phone I've ever used is the Samsung D500, which doesn't get me so fast to the music and doesn't have that awesome camera, but is smaller, prettier and much more fun to play with.
Great, but how's the reception? My old T610 sucked big sweaty ones...
Can anyone confirm this is a SMS Duo and not Duo PRO. I have the 910a and love it, except the memory stick portion is somewhat of a waste since it maxs out at 128MB (Duo, not Duo Pro). If this is a Duo PRO, I would consider this a great phone, if not... skip it.
I've been using the K750i for 3-4 weeks now and compiled a review of it at http://www.bitpad.com. It includes links to some great reveiws and pictures to compare it with the D750 version and the 800W.
Its a great phone and I am happy with the purchase. Its nice not having to carry a Blackberry anymore, and with a 1GB memory stick, my iPOD is staying at home to!
Here's the direct link to the reveiw: http://bitpad.typepad.com/bitpadcom/2005/07/a_truly_great_m.html
I doubt this phone will be coming to Cingular anytime soon... I bought it (the international version) hoping that the lack of 850 band support wouldn,t hurt me that much... But it did.
@ Matthew: the k750 will take any capacity Duo card (and comes with an adaptor)
Don't get me wrong... Its a great phone with great features... But unless you can ensure 1900 coverage on Cingular networks, don't even bother.
from mobile burn:
"There is a slight issue with the new Fast Port, though. If you wiggle the headset connector, you will hear the audio level drop a noticeable amount. I fear that this might happen too easily once the headset has been connected and removed many times after frequent use. In general, I don't think this type of connector is appropriate for music. Sony Ericsson will be offering a 3.5mm stereo headset jack adapter in the future, if not already, but that won't fix the problem, though it will allow you to use your favorite headphones instead of the included ones."
Not crazy about that -- and the same applies to the w800. dang
My friend brought his new phone over yesterday and it looked exactly like this one, but he has Cingular, which model is it?
I picked up a K750i in India last month.
Swapped my Nokia 6600 for it. So I can definitely see the advantages of the 2mp camera. The photos come out great (i only use the fine-mode with the biggest photo size and it works like a charm)
My only problem with this phone (aside from the fact that it lacks a standard 3.5mm jack) is that you NEED to plug in the SE headphones to use the built-in FM Tuner ... I know it uses them as an external antenna ... but no reason to software-block this feature. If I get bad reception without that antenna ... so be it, let me choose.
Also, cannot easily direct the music to my bluetooth Jabra.
Still, i'm in love with the size and the amount of features I get!
#37, it was probably the SE T637, which looks similar and has been out forever.
Everybody else: I heard that you can't use this phone as a USB key without installing drivers on the computer first. Is there a fix for that?
SonyEricsson has now taken the K750i off of the US website.
Has 750i been discontinued ? It use to appear on products page with coming soon text. It's nowhere under products and nowhere under support. In fact if you do a search on sony erickson u.s website you won't find it anywhere. I want to buy it but if it is discontinued.
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=us&lc=en&ver=4000&template=pp1&zone=pp&lm=pp
Dull I have noticed that too. It's nowhere on u.s website. Has it been discontinued ? I have sent an email to SE to clarify.
I've had K750i for a month and a half now. I am still amazed with it, and became even more so when Apple updated iSync to be able to sync this phone among other new models. It has replaced my Sony Clie and iPod. The sound on the earbuds is great, the radio perfect, the pictures amazing. And I am able to check my email without any problems. And, no, it is not discontinued - you can find it on SE site under World Support
Yeah um for that Dorkus that posted number 6, simply because a mobile phone doesn't come with 850 frequency, doesn't mean that "no US carrier will pick it up". T-Mobile USA recently (as in last month) started testing 850 frequency in the mid-western states, it was not offered anywhere else on that network. For those of you who think that T-Mobile USA will be getting this phone I can safely say that for the next 2 months there is NOTHING in T-Mobile's plans for this phone. Mainly for 2 reasons, first for the terrible performance record of the T610, and second for the price of the phone. How do I know, gee could it be that I work for T-Mobile USA's handset approval and netowrk testing department?
I doubt that Cingular will pick it up; not because of the 850 thing, but because they are too obsessed in selling phones that look half decent and have crappy features, this phone doesn't fit that mold AND the phone in terms of data isn't capable of EDGE at least. While I will agree with that last part in number 6 about the exclusivity of the phone, it will only be that way for a couple of reasons: people like free phones nothing too expensive, those of us that wouldn't mind paying for a phone with good tech only make up like 1% of the population, and for a while this phone may not come to the states because T-Mobile International has exclusive rights to the D750i (T-Mobile version fo the K750i, which looks more like a blue version of the W800i) so the other European countries will be trying to get a version of it leaving the USA out of the loop in the eyes of SE.
To answer the thing about the memory stick, it uses DUO PRO, I haven't tried on mine yet but you probably could use a regular DUO on it (if you don't mind 2/3 of the card sticking out of the side of the phone lol).
Alot of things can be done with the K750i firmware. I have seen this service that will even flash the firmware to make it exactly like the W800i's (which really isn't a diff, except for the flight mode thing). Huge Caveat though, for all that are planning to get the phone and for those that have it DON'T FLASH IT if it's working fine. I have seen 2 of these phones ruined by doing that, they were working fine until they were flashed and then they started freezing up and acting all crazy.
I was just wondering do you think $500 for K750i and SE Bluetooth Headset w/Caller ID is worth it????
The W800i and 750I are similar. It has been proven by those who bought both, plus I have used both and found them to be similar. Major difference is that on the W800i You can turn off the phone functions, leaving just the MP3 playback, hence, its known as the Walkman model.
Can you tell me : which countries make Sony Ericsson K750i ?
Can any one of you who have the phone tell me where the sony ericsson K750I is manufactured
So will the K750i work if I use my American T-Mobile sim card?
I bought my 750i in Bahrain and I absolutely love it. The GREAT thing about buying a cell phone overseas is GSM and UNLOCKED phones. I was not tied to any carrier - and as I had been overseas for 5 years - I didn't know which carrier I would go with until I got to the States. Also, living overseas, we aren't tied to a paticualr phone/carrier the way it is here in the States. Can you say monopoly? We are so advanced, yet so far behind. The only problem I see is with my bluetooth on my new BMW 330. I can see the BMW on my phone, enter the passcode - vice versa - can see the phone on the BMW. After trying to connect - the phone just hangs as though it is still trying to connect. This will go on and hang up the phone - have to turn it off to get back to normal. Strange thing is - in Bahrain - sitting in BMW there, the same phone connected and worked with no problem. Does anyone know if bluetooth is different based on countries? Same phone - US speced car. Thanks.
