Longhorn official name = Windows Vista
So there's been some buzz on this and now it's looking confirmed by a few insider sources — the official name for
the new Microsoft Longhorn operating
system is going to be Windows Vista. As in "a view into the distance" which surely refers to the prolonged development
timeline of the OS (ouch, we had to.). Look for the official announcement tomorrow morning.
[Thanks, Mitch]

Heck, at least the Longhorn Saloon in Whistler will loose the dorks that visited for the name only.
"Vista"???? Please tell me your kidding!
To phrase it as nice as I can, "That Name SUCKS!"
Whats wrong with "Longhorn"? or just "Windows 2006" (or 2007, or when ever it comes out).
Vista means Save in Icelandic, guess it means I'll never forget to save again...
Vista, it sounds like a 70's car than an OS.

Vista really isn't that bad of a name at all. It's a ton better than XP. The only thing not so wonderful about this name is now we will be saying Vista Vs. Tiger, or whatever. It just doesn't sound right but it could be because we are so used to the XP moniker...
Now if MS started using dogs as their names, we might have some competition...
Why does everything have to be so negative? Look on the bright side!
Seems like engadget.com turns into a mac fan site and the quality of most comments are from a bunch of high school kids. Sad, I used to like this blog.
well at least microsoft doesn't come out ever year with a new operating system asking $120 and claiming that is the best ever.
Windows HASTA LA VISTA. What a kick ass name. They should get Arnie to do the adverts. Stuff like: Windows, Ill be back.... In 2007.
BTW. Mac OS 10.5 is Leopard. Said so in the keynote.
Are you sure it doesn't refer to Windows Vista's ability to obscure your long-distance view with HDCP?
vista ??? what the hell ?
And indeed it is Vista!!!

Vista = Save = Chicken in other languages according to comments above.
Anymore translations?

Beta coming August 3rd 2005
VISTA is already a rather large software system used by publishing companies worldwide. Could there be any trademark issues here?

Wahoo! I gotta get me that beta!
Anyone know the requirements for systems yet? I heard it needs a min. 1GB of RAM to run... Don't know if it's true or not.
Is that like the Vista Cruiser from "That 70's Show"? The OS is named after a POS 70's teenager car?
#41 Tupper gets the prize for coming up with the eventual shorthand for Windows Vista: WiVi.
vista simply means view not view in the distance as it says in the post
Well, Windows does have decimal numbers for their OSes.
At least, for the NT-based OSes.
NT3.5.1
NT4
NT5 (Win2K)
NT5.1 [Version 5.1.2600] (Windows XP)
NT5.2 [Version 5.2.3790] (Windows Server 2003)
I wonder if Longhorn is 5.3 or 6?

I loves me Macs too, but honestly Vista isn't a bad name as OSes go.
Besides, ingen ra is right, y'all might as well get used to it cause you'll be screaming its name later ;-)
Does anyone know the requiements for the BETA?
'Vista' means 'View' in Spanish. That means that Windows Vista is going to have a revolutionary view and look.
Does Windows "Vista" mean more Viruses, Infections, Spyware, Trojans and Adware?
I think it does...
Jedda, I would assume there could be some trademark issues with that but who's going to take on Microsoft though.
As for the specs, from what Microsoft said about needing a "Current Processor" we could assume soemthing like a 3GHz Processor, 512MB RAM and a 64MB DirectX 9 graphics card for that flashy interface.
Microsoft have said that a 1GHz CPU and 256MB of RAM can run the basic interface windows 2000 style though.
Face it: it's gonna take a NASA sized computer to run and even then will crash every time you plug a USB device in.
I think 'Mac OS X Pussy' would be great: a pleasant, easy ride, unlike 'Vista'. I wonder if they have replaced the blue screen of death with a pretty view
Did anyone notice all the people in the crowd at the public announcement of Vista? Notice they all were wearing cowboy hats. The last thing I want to see is a developer working on a platform wearing a cowboy hat. I basically told all of my immediate family that if I catch them using a windows vista machine in the future they will never be able to ask me any more technical support questions .... ever again. Tired of all the stupid trojans, spyware, etc. getting loaded and having to FDisk machines. God Loves us and wants us to be happy.... Apple OSX is proof of that.
Why stop at "Windows Vista"? They should have gone all the way and called it "Ventanas Vista"
come on guys, face it its a operating system code name, its not like its the end of the world whatever it gets called, maybe they should have been in sync and bought it out as windows 2006 just like windows 2000... that should be the pattern. I just think microsoft like getting alot of people worked up about this stuff ya no what a mean? "Windows Vista" sounds catchy IMO... but never the less its peoples opionions and people will still buy it regardless of their codename. It just gives people headaches..
well to start Vista is fine! It means (in english)
A distant view or an extensive mental view or picture. that is straight out of websters! and what does it matter what they call it. to start people hated the number names like 3.1 then they changed to XP and people hated that so Vista is the comprimize
and you cant blame Windows for there being so many viruses! (firefox is proof of that) when something is popular people want to take advantage of it. and if OS ten had 90% of the market then they would have just as many viruses
The Blue Screen of Death has appearantly been replaced with the Red Screen of Death. I guess its to make those Mac commercials obsolete! Still, it seems to be a screen of death in the longrun. I think blue matched the theme a bit better.

"well people though 'xbox360' was a stupid name for the xbox 2, but people got used to it and frankly it was a brilliant marketing move. how much do you want to bet the same happens here?"
i still think xbox 360 is the worse name ever. worse than vista. and that is really bad.
why don't they call it windows pouts?
i just want an operating system that works. i want to turn the computer on and not get any error messages and not encounter any problems. if this isn't the case, i say hasta la vista to microsoft, hello apple. besides, apple comes up with some pretty cool things, e.g. dashboard. plus, it won't kill you to upgrade your operating system when the new one rolls around.
ok you all really can't say that the blue screen of death(bsod) is common in xp i have been using it practicaly since it came out and i have got maybe 3 bsods at max and that was because i over clocked my computer to about 4.2 from 3.2 and it was amazing that it even past the post and it bsoded because it was over heating and the only other time it did it was when i used a 10 year old driver that was only 3.1 compatable
my point is you really have to do somthing wrong to get a bsod!
Hey! If Apple is going with cat names, then maybe Microsoft whould have used dog names! Windows Rottweiler! :) Vista...yeah, we get it, you look out of windows to see the vista before you. Great. I hope the programming team was more creative than the naming team.
stupid name. in lithuanian language vishta means chicken :D
Great abbreviation, "WiVi". Smart quick thinking there!
'Vista' is ok, but it's too ... expected. predictable, execrably cute Yuppie thinking, complete with cowboy hats.
'Longhorn' at least has a strong, male imagery, and the source story about the Whistler hill and the Longhorn bar was pretty cool.
so, i guess they'll go with Vista. (sigh)
cheerz
Vista FTW
