Windows Vista is officially official
Yep, it's confirmed: Longhorn = Windows Vista. They couldn't keep the news from leaking out last night, but Microsoft just made the official announcement a few minutes ago. Hope you're as pumped up about the name as these guys, because you're going to be hearing the name "Windows Vista" A LOT over the next eight years or so.

... I really thinks the name sucks. I'll call it MSV to avoid calling it Vista.
Main Entry: vis·ta
Function: noun
Etymology: Italian, sight, from visto, past participle of vedere to see, from Latin vidEre -- more at WIT
1 : a distant view through or along an avenue or opening : PROSPECT
2 : an extensive mental view (as over a stretch of time or a series of events)
Lame
-Drrck
i think the name sucks. Since it takes them so long to make an os atleast dont leave us with this name.
Why does the name matter anyways? Even if it had a bad ass name, the OS would still be the same.
vista is icelandic for save, as in to save a document not to save someone.
[shaved ape Ballmer]I! LOVE! THIS! COMPANY! WOOO! VISTA! WOO! GIVE IT UP FOR ME![/shaved ape Ballmer] Sorry. I know there's no Ballmer in that clip, but I can just imagine him bouncing around the stage whooping it up.
That was about the dorkiest announcement video yet . . . I love it when the guy removed his cowboy hat and put on a MSV logo'd baseball hat. Sheesh.
The audience reminded my of those infomercial groups who applaud like mad when the pear gets sliced into a spiral . . . . nothing like canned enthusiasm.
Longhorn's dead, long live VISTA!!!!!
;)
#4, and even if it had a totally different code, as long as it has "Windows", or "Microsoft" in front of it, it will be universally hated...
#5 I was thinking the same thing lmao
Man, is that a terrible name. Really, really terrible. Gotta wonder how much money Microsoft spent coming up with that. I'll bet it was a small fortune. Either that or they just drew names out of a hat...a more logical explanation.
Vista...hmmmm..as in a long, long way until you actually see an OS?
Something tells me the think tank at msft is getting a little shallow if you know what I mean. Time for some chlorine in that water...
They should have stuck with an x.x system. But they had to go and gay it all up for the common people.
They have set themselves up for "Hasta La Vista, Baby" jokes for years to come.
When will we see the first governator/Vista photoshop?
that's soooo ridiculous.
So I wonder what will happen to the program called Vista thats been around since the early 90s. It is a landscape creation tool, much like KPT Bryce.
MSV = MicroSoft's Virus?
Just one idea ;)
- Lodders
Think these guys have a copyright infringement case?
http://www.vistawindows.com/
Yeah Dale, Microsoft does have some pretty cheesy announcements. There better be some major changes to Vista because I'm not ready to spend $100+ for an add-on to Windows XP. I'm not yet convinced.
I don't think it's a terrible name, but I can't help but think of "Del Boca Vista", the old folks community Seinfeld's parents lived in. That is definitely tainting my view a bit. Makes it seem like somethin for my grandma.
Vista sounds like an appropriate name for the end of the MS era. I can't imagine in 2016-2018 (When the next version of Windows comes out) anybody will care about the former monopolist.
"Hasta La Vista, Baby"
LOL!!! Hard to believe they didn't think of that being an issue! . . . Ah . . wait . . keywords: "didn't think".
That explains it.
Vista?
Awful. Even Mac OSX sounds sort of mean "Tiger", but Vista? Sheesh...
It seems like they named their last OS well. After Mac OS X runs on Intel, we'll be seeing people saying "Asta la VISTA baby!" to all Micro$oft crap!
Is it just me or was that a really crappy video file? Couldn't even see the text. Not that I care that much.
Hmm. I wonder why the file was not made in the better alternate video formats like QuickTime or MPEG?
You damn fools just popped out of the wombs. XP was a bad name. It still doesn't even make sense.
Vista is a suitable, average, normal, expected, decent name.
18: VistaWindows has no rights to the name, as it's quite clear the trademark is limited only to the scope of the business. Vista sells windows, Microsoft sells software.
I believe there are many precedents in law for this already... think TigerDirect and MacOS X Tiger as the most recent case.
(Although, I'm pretty certain MS will just kick them a few million to skip any lawsuit.)
3.1 -> The begining
95-98 -> The ramp up
XP -> The apex
Vista -> The begining of the end
...
Hmm, another iteration of Windows that will be 2 years behind the innovation applied to OS X...
Lame, without question. What about playing Boom by POD at the end of the annoucement. Never let geeks intro their own product, it loses a ton of cache. I'll stick with my Mac. Oh and I love the 'Confident' remark as a descriptor of the OS. By 'confident' you mean releasing code with holes in it, exploitable Internet browsers and patches on a 5-times-a-week basis?
Big woop. They hold a special press even just to announce the name or did they do something else?
As for me, I'm sticking to OS X.
I knew they weren't sticking with "Longhorn" probably because of "Tiger."
FYI: vista in Latvian means chicken!
all of you complaining about the name are idiots! do you really think "longhorn" is better than "vista"? longhorn has got to be the gayest name ever!
Are you telling me there is not one condo available in all of Del Boca Vista??
I found a secret screenshoot of the new Windows Vista OS!!!

This is what Vista reminds me of:
http://images.google.com/images?q=vista+cruiser&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images
The big ugly station wagon of OS's.
That video clip was the worst presentation I've seen. How about some details? Maybe MS should hire Steve Jobs to help them out with any public speaking.
VISTA is already a software (although not an OS) used by many publishing companies.
http://www.vistacomp.com
All the script kiddie MS haters crack me up. I don't see why the name of the OS affects them, it won't run on an iPod anyway. The name is pretty lame, but the OS is far from the downfall of MS.
I can't wait for the kiddies to start grabbing Vista Pro off of bittorrent... oh wait.
Honestly, I don't think the name "Vista" is that bad. I guess I'm the only one. I like Apple, I really do, but am I the only one who realizes that unless your editing video or recording audio professionally, once you step out of your house your in a windows world? Everyone here will learn the in's and outs of Vista eventually, but the same can't be said for OSX.
A friend of mine gave me a copy of Longhorn last week. Before I had a chance to install it, he told be don't bother. He uninstalled and put XP back on. I guess Vista is quite the RAM hog!
Hello mum!
I've got a spudgun!
#26 you had it all wrong its more like
3.1-> the apex
95-vista-> long drawn out death
The name is fine...better than endless number revisions, besides, MS stopped numbering their releases after 3.11!
OS X Tiger is awesome no doubt, but Joe McCullough said it right - Apple is popular and because of their "underdog" status, people will cherish everything they do, while M$ could do everything right and still be despised. Oh well, I like the name none-the-less.
"Why does the name matter anyways? Even if it had a bad ass name, the OS would still be the same."
So the OS will just be ass???
Vista is also a sign system:
http://www.vistasign.com
"The name is fine...better than endless number revisions, besides, MS stopped numbering their releases after 3.11!"
There is a reason why they stopped the numbers and its purely from a marketing standpoint. Numbers show that there is only a marginal increase in the version. Windows 2000 = 5.0, Windows XP = 5.1, Windows 2003 Server = 5.2 Its a good way of eschewing the truth that there really is little difference between 2K and XP.
DAMN IT! Now whenever I use this Windows and say the name, I'm going to have some guy with a deep New Yorker accent saying "Vista..." over and over again stuck in my head. >:@
who cares what its called? it'll no doubt need patching every two weeks and updating with some service pack so it wont turn your computer into a pile of smoldering circuits.I'm buying a Mac instead
Someone had to do it. It might as well be me.
Enjoy!

Ever seen the little creepy movie, I hope for them they will use a better video code in the further system. Although the quality is bad, ohh they are soo cool on this video, so dam hard rock hip hop windows cool
Grng what do you want I think the name fits perfect,
a useless name to a useless OS ^^
Although, Vista is a crazy name. It's a very streamlined and clean sounding name.
What a lame name. I can already imagine people saying they are running "Windows Vista" and laughing at them. They should have just named it Windows V or something. Less humiliation.
To #40 Chris: Huh? I know lots of folks who use Apple and are not in the creative fields . . In fact, when I walk out into the 'Windows world', I see people wearing white earbuds.
There are many folks at my company who use their Dell laptop for email and work, but they go home to an Apple that they bought in the last year. MS is far to entrenched to be unseated anytime soon, but times are a-changin' . . .
Oh thats BLOODY RICH!! I just went to the M$ website and tried to watch the naming announcement video and windows media cant play the friggin extension. A sign of things to with Vista (lame name, we'll get used to it though) maybe???
They should change to "Windows Open OS".
let bug come in the windows. bwhahaha
Vista, Altavista? WTF
Microshaft is slowly killing itself, stealing from Mac OS, getting buggier, and ruining people's lives at the same time. Hey, they're great at multi-tasking.
Dale: Bringing the iPod into an argument about OS's is useless. Just because people have iPods doesn't has any respectable share of the computer industry. Say what you will about Microsoft making OSes that are already behind Apple when they come out but I sure as hell would rather download a service pack then buy a new version of Windows each year with a different cat name.
I think they should call it "Windows movie downloading, porn surfing, mp3 sharing, and the occasional timeout to read Engadget O/S".
how do you all complian about MS when you're using it right now?
Sofa king we Todd Ed.
TNT: I'm not, Mac OS BIZNITCH!!!!!!!!!!! Don't assume, you when you do, you make an ass out of you and me.
To quote #2....
Etymology: Italian, sight, from visto, past participle of vedere to see, from Latin vidEre -- more at WIT
1 : a distant view through or along an avenue or opening : PROSPECT
2 : an extensive mental view (as over a stretch of time or a series of events)
Now, I'm sure there is a joke in here somewhere about a view, and DRM, I just can't quite find it. :)
To Trae Shaw: I referred to the iPod, but mentioned the OS in my second paragraph. I'm not sure I 'get' the rest of your comment . . . the iPod actually HAS affected the marketshare for OS. (Apple up a fraction)
It's fine that you enjoy working in Windows . . I'm just glad there are alternatives. My 'cat names' have been pretty awesome feature upgrades to a pretty awesome system already. To each their own.
Am I supposed to be excited about the re-release of Windoze 95 AGAIN?
I can't watch it because Windows Media Player crashes in OSX... not that I am surprised!
Windows Vista
MMmmmm catchy
I just hope that this windows doesn't come with a crappy boot screen and colors. And the name Vista sucks.
yeah windows sucks but i have to be stuck with it
the world revolves around windows . they're too big of a monopoly.
VISTA = Vastly Inferior System To Apple
put that in your pipe and smoke it!!
=)
yeah, well I'll be running it eventually I guess.
Watching (if you can call it that) the video is a lesson in the differences between Apple and Microsoft. Windows Media Player sux little baby bird eggs in comparison to Quicktime 7 using h.264 codec for streaming. I can play Apple's streams full screen on my 23" LCD and it looks great. I can read everything and actually see what's there. And not only that, but all the flash and color and effects were outside the screen. While in OS X presentations, the cools stuff is inside the screen. :-P
Marketing sure did blow it on this one. Thoughts inspired by the name "Vista":
* Small California suburbs (Chula Vista, Monte Vista, Rio Vista, Bella Vista...) and all the high schools that go with them
* An old line of brand name PC clones
* The name of an old apartment complex
* A motel name trying to sound "fancy"
It just doesn't sound appealing or even new. I'd like to hear the pitch they gave to propose this name. How bad were the other candidates that they resorted to using "Vista"?
#15, #23 and #50... first thing I thought of when I saw the new name.
Regardless of the name, we'll see if it crashes less and can reduce spyware, trojans and virus attacks.... HA HA HA HA!
new OS = new leaks, holes and flaws.
I give it 2 months before the RTM release before it's seriously compromised.
Sticking with OS X here and finding ways to protect my clients when they eventually move to Vista.
so what....for the revealing of the name, Microsoft just summoned like every M$ employee into that auditorium so that it makes people think a large crowd gathered up for the announcement? lame.
and the music at the end is so lame.....Nowhere close to how Apple brings in music artists like U2 and such.
http://www.vistawindows.com.au/
windows vista's first wallpaper:
http://www.l33tist.com/vista2.html
pretty cool
asta la vista, baby
sorry, i just had to.
;P
I had a south african friend tell me the new name earlier. He has quite a thick accent so it came out as 'Windows Vesta'. For me, a Brit, that immediately reminded me of...
http://www.britishcornershop.co.uk/britishfood.asp?id=IF0057
...by far the most evil food on the planet (except for Marmite), but somehow appropriate, turning something that might have been prime beef into plastic mock imitation food that you rehydrate but leaves you wanting something else to eat.
'Vista' isn't much better. It just screams of a committee naming session. Boring.
that's funny... because i both live and work in vista!
That looks like the Skipper from Gilligans Island, and Michael Moore break-dancing!. jeeeze the scarey thoughts.
they need a new branding department because windows vista is about as good of a name as xbox 360...
they need a new branding department because windows vista is about as good of a name as xbox 360...
LOL...what a piece of shit. Vista?? LOL...only an idiot (aka Windows User) would buy such shit from a garbage factory (aka Microshit).
LOL!!!
The sheer amount of morons commenting on this article is unbelievably overwhelming. Please get a hold of your self. Every time Microsoft and or Windows are mentioned, you zealots feel a need to boast your opinion. NO M$ 4 MEEEEE!!! M$ IS STEALING FROM APPLE!! I GIVE STEVE JOBS HEAD!! I can't stress this enough; saying "M$" or "Micro$oft" doens't make you look cool, funny, or witty. It's stupid, immature, cliche, and just plain annoying!
What was so wrong with Longhorn? I thought it had that secret government, crypto, high tech ring to it. Now all we've got is VISTA! What gives?
I like it. When you break it down it really isn't that bad. It's Vis which is like vis a vis (or something like that) and Ta...which means buh bye. So when you think about it it's not that bad. It's a TA with a VIS in front of it.
//What was so wrong with Longhorn? I thought it had that secret government, crypto, high tech ring to it. Now all we've got is VISTA! What gives?//
Longhorn was the codename. Just as XP was Whistler.

For the love of god tell me you're kidding.

well....if Microsoft makes better products, people wouldn't hate on them. Why give them credit when all the innovations is done at Cupertino?
Windows Vista? I guess I'll just call it Wista or something since I'm a lazy bum.
What's with all the MS hate? Sure, they have some bugs in their software, but what company doesn't?
Anyways, I think the name is, ok. I would think they could come up with something better, but most of us abbreviate the names of our OS' anyways (WinXP, OSX)so I'll probably be calling it MSV. And after about a year or so when everyone has made the switch we can all just refer to it as "Windows" and nobody will care what the suffix is.
BTW, Apple fanboys and girls, how can you complain about MS being so terrible and at the same time accuse them of stealing all of Apple's innovative ideas. Lol, isn't that something of a contradiction? If everything MS has is taken from Apple, and MS sucks, then, doesn't Apple suck worse for coming up with crap idea in the first place? haha
Just wanted to share. Oh, and before the Apple zealots get on my case about this post: I have an iBook with OS Tiger and love it. I prefer to use it for my entertainment (recording/editing/managing music, photo editing, movie making; all via iLife) and it works great! However, when it comes to productivity, gaming, and networking to other computers, the Windows PC is easily my favorite.
But, and there's always a but, Microsoft has something that Apple does not: a virtually unlimited supply of money.
Yes, it's all about the money.
Despite what all the naysayers think, Microsoft is not going down. Not for a VERY, VERY long time, if ever. The reason is this: MS has the ability to compete in just about any technology or software related market it wants to. Microsoft has been expanding the way people depend on it for everyday tasks. Even most Mac users have copies of MS Office and IE. And now, it looks like Microsoft has taken to the idea of competing against Adobe in the area of graphic design software. If the vast majority of graphic designers are using the Mac platform to do their work, and Microsoft creates the next standard for graphic design and then suddenly decides to pull its support of that software, as well as its Office suite, then what? APPLE WILL DIE AS A COMPETITOR TO WINDOWS. Apple will perhaps evolve into a consumer electronics company and perhaps a software developer for the Windows platform (think evolved iPod, iLife, and Media PC extension writer).
SO, if anything it will be Apple going down the tubes :(
That being said, I'm looking forward to the new Intel iMac so that I can run Windows Vista and OS X Leopard on the same computer.
Well, I'll quit rambling. I guess I got a little off-topic :)
To all of the people with the "Asta la vista" cracks, I believe it is actually "Hasta la vista". The "H" is silent (at least if my high school spanish is correct). Then again, maybe you all meant what you typed, "Asta" is "Spear" in english, so "Spear the Vista"?
A Vista Virus has such a nice ring to it!
Do not underestimate the marketing wizards in Redmond. They don't make Vistakes.
Oh, yes, and something else I forgot; in response to, well, someone, lol :)
Microsoft IS NOT killing itself. Are you freaking kiding me??!! MS' user base has inflated at such an incredible rate in these few years that we have had Windows XP.
Whereas Apple IS killing its long term succes by keeping control-freak Steve Jobs on hand. Just because the Mac is moving to Intel microprocessors, doesn't mean that the Mac OS will be sold at grocery stores, Wal-Marts, or BestBuys like the Windows OS is; and it won't be running on current Wintel machines.
So, as long as Apple has the likes of Steve Jobs that doesn't seriously want to expand the Mac's market share, it will most likely level out, and then drop like a rock when Vista rolls around.
Sucks, I know. But such is the life of software companies that piss off MS and don't have a good enough CEO to compete.
Yes, it is "Hasta" with a silent "h" like in the american version of "Herb"
Anyways, I thought Longhorn was a catchier name then Vista is... Vista sounds like some fruity OS ... Longhorn has POWER! c'mon guys, learn off the Mac names... panther, tiger, cheetah, siamese... just fricking use a cat name and people will buy it.
http://www.vistawindows.com.au/
http://www.vistawindows.com
they are going to sue microsoft.
It's really strange to see so many people have a problem with the name. Maybe that's just because it's Microsoft. I'm actually tired of all the relatively meaningless acronym names like OSX, NT, XP, etc. that just sound like car names (although I guess you'd have to add a number to make it completely sound as lame as car name - oh, wait... OS/2). Although non-acronym names are equally meaningless, I like the word vista.
Regardless, it's not about the name. It's about the software, so I'll wait to judge them until I run the software.
