Sahara Computer enters HDTV market

Sahara Plasma

Just when we thought there wasn't room for another Plasma HDTV vendor, along came Sahara, a South Africa-based computer manufacturer. Much like Dell figured to enter the consumer electronics space, Sahara is adding a 42-inch plasma to their current offerings. If we've done the currency conversion correctly, the unit lists for approximately $3,200.

The Sahara PDP handles input resolutions of 480p,720p,1080i but like many plamas, its top output res is 1024 x 768 (720p). The unit also provides SRS True Surround sound with virtual 5.1 audio via two external speakers. Inputs are the standard sort: composite, DVI, and S-Video, but no HDMI jack. We don't know about Sahara's computer business, but we hope they remember Gateway's entrance (and exit) from the digital television market. Is it us, or are all of these plasma offerings starting to clutter up the retail shelves?
