Samsung sez: video is hot, microdrives are not

Samsung YP-T8

So it looks like Samsung is totally down on microdrives in their portable players — so down, in fact, that they have no plans to produce any more microdrive units whatsoever, at least in the near future. They're corralling all their industrial designers to incorporate flash memory into their portable players from now on. Case in point, the YP-T8, which they're planning to endow with 4GB by the beginning of 2006 and 10GB by 2007. They're also developing classic arcade-style games for the device, and are sinking nothing into any more microdrive-based units. They're also apparently working on a new flash-based unit that looks to be competing with the iPod shuffle at a price point of $99 for 512MB, which should arrive come September.
