Colani's sci-fi-style trucks
We'll leave it to our pals at Autoblog to cover the nuts and bolts of these things (if they have nuts and bolts) but we gotta hand it to Colani Design for at least trying something different with the venerable 18-wheeler. No word on if it transforms into anything, but we'll keep you posted.

Something new... but its ugly!!! ^^
P. @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
Old stuff, must be from the early 90's. Never made it in production (for obvious reasons... ugly, useless... ;-)
mal @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
actually not only ugly but absolutely useless:
the entry of the cabin is to the back of the truck.... hmmmm how do you get in or out once a trailor is hooked on... ? ? ? ? ?

They also make pianos:

Prince uses one...

#2, this is not new, Colani came up with this stuff in the late 80s, early 90s. He also designed completely impractical PC boxes at that time. He used to work in a fairy-tale castle in Germany about 50 km form my hometown.
mclaugh @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
This looks like a direct ripoff of one of the tractor trailers in the 80s NBC show the Highwayman....

Unless they use a more standard trailer, I doubt anyone would use these. I am sure many of you have seen trains and ships with tractor trailers on them. Unless they stack easy and can be converted to a train car easy, like I said, I doubt it would be used.
Gordy @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
Okay, it's just me I see. These trucks look like Lady Liberty's d!ldo.
Mike @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
The whole design is completely impractical. What would happen if the truck got a flat tire? The driver would end up taking a sledge hammer to that peice over the rear tires to get to them. Or maybe that was thought of and you just cant tell from the pics.

#9: very funny, very true.
Question Answerer @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
It looks like some of them tow the standard rectangular box trailer and as far as I can see the door is on the left side not the back.
frank @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
I just wanna know what the deal is with the Jesus-looking dude on their catalog. Go to the web site and look at the images on the right pane...
WTF? I thought they made trucks.

I'm amazed at the fact that this is a blog for new, innovative technology, yet every time someone creates something really different, all the sad sacks on here start throwing out their offhand remarks like "dude, it's ugly" "it sucks" or "uh, huh huh, useless."
The best part is that the biggest haters (and worst spellers) are always the people who not only haven't SEEN the thing they're pissing on, they haven't even bothered to read about it.
The Colani can certainly haul a regular trailer - look at the pics. The door is on the side, not the back (do you think they're idiots?).
And did someone REALLY think that covered wheels mean you can't change a flat? Have you never seen an old Lincoln or Caddillac with these?
Sheesh.
Maybe these trucks aren't addressing a desperate need in the world, but they look cool as flock, and I like a world where Transformers roam the roads. Chill out.

This might even go back to the *early* '80s. Colani's work was featured in Omni magazine in January 1980 (http://westcity.org.uk/html/omni-vol_2-no_4.html). No pictures online, and of course I got rid of my Omni collection a looong time ago. I think there might have been an early version of this way back then. There was a weird motorcycle that looked like it enclosed the rider, too.
File under "new from the wayback machine."

I hope everybody can read German.

They are irregular trucks with regular trailors. The most visible one on the picture is a tanker (hence the roundness). I like the windshield wipers :P
