More Treo 670 pics
Mr. roc a fella hooked us up again, this time with a couple more pics of that new Windows Mobile-powered Treo 670.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Is it possible that maybe he used a Windows Powered phone elsewhere, took a screenshot (if thats possible, i dont know - ive never used one of these things) and transferred it to his Treo 670... somehow. And then, even less likely maybe he set it as a wallpaper or just displayed the images fully in his phone?
The question is - is it the OS or the Hardware that makes my treo reset every five minutes? I'm guessing the software, in which case:
BRING... IT ... ON!
john
dude, that says Verizon!
why not ask for a screenshot of the system info? i guess if they can photoshop these pics with the correct lighting, they can also photoshop a pic of the sys info too.
#3, duh it says verizon. verizon carries the other Treos too.
Also, what's so special about the GPS stuff in the first shot? My crappy little 40 dollar phone does that.
Give it up please. There is no WM 5.0 devices out with a square screen to take a screen capture from. This is the real deal.
#1 - Tom
Clearly you have not seen the video. Do a search here on engadget for it.
How convenient that just a week after the Motorola Franklin debuts we get these "spy-pics" of the Treo 670.
Duuude.. this is real, check the windows mobile button.. duhh..
And this overshadows the fact that there is also a new Palm Os Treo version. So all you Palm Doom Prayers back off.

Has anyone ever though it maybe just a Plastic Treo Shell around a windows smartphone??
the hw6500 has a square screen.
for time #76,983 : hey palm! the treo hardware is what blows.
if i wanted a WM convergence phone there are numerous better solutions than a treo... now if i wanted a palm os convergence phone... the treo was king... but the hardware was always like 18 months (at least) behind. let me guess... still no wifi. genius.
Does the screen resolution seem like 320x320, like the other Treos? Or do you think it's 240x240?
Apple is next!
Wow the company that created Palm OS is now bending knees to Microsoft.
Definitely Apple is next. First they changed to x86 Intel just like windows, now they created a Windows compatible two button mouse. NExt they will dump mac and start using Windows Vista!
NOT TO MENTION---
there is a windows key. Look. Right above the keyboard on the left side.
thank you sur, all day yesterday i was telling ppl its real with the first crappy photo, then with all the videos, everyone was like oh no its not real. And again ppl will say its fake, why dont they just go hide in a closet
yea dummies there is a windows key on their, then you will just argue that he made, well just shut it and try to find your beeloved treo 650, before they will be no more palm powered handhelds.
Gotta love that black marker on top to mask the prototype ID.
Unfortunately, it reads HD677. Somebody's up for some spanking.
As much as I love PALM, it the Treo now runs WM, we might as well go with the iPaq hw6515. Smaller, faster, no antenna, built-in GPS and Mini-SD AND SD.

Sweet pics... instead of using a Sharpie though, maybe the dude should get Photoshop. ;) So my question is, when can I buy it???
I believe this one. Anyway, seems the pics were taken yesterday - this guy is really fast bringing these to us.

I believe this is a true treo windows mobile 5.0 running. But I think this was made during the PalmOne period (before Colligan). Its not logical for Palm to get the PALM brand name back from Palmsource and then release a windows mobile treo a few months after the acquisition. They would've wasted $30M for that "brand". As stated by Mr. Paul Blinkhorn in asia.cnet.com, and I quote (when asked about a WM treo) "Today, we believe that the best OS (operating system) for customers is the Palm OS. Why? If you compare us with any other OS, there is no comparison--this is the most intuitive and easy-to-use OS available, and we think this is the right product for us now." If ever Palm will release any windows mobile phones, it may do so in the future. But not today.
It's definately real
i told roc a fella to post a side by side pic with the treo 650. he said he can't get a hold of a treo 650? can you believe it?
engadget, please send the poor guy a treo 650 model or something!!
just kidding :P
DIE SQUARE SCREEN DIE!
DIE SQUARE SCREEN DIE!

DIE SQUARE SCREEN DIE!
DIE SQUARE SCREEN DIE!
The BIG problem here is that Palm must think that a Windows Mobile environment is a desirable one. Trying to configure network connections, setting up a cellular modem, even trying to configure remote syncing, or installing other software is like, well, it's like trying to do all that on a Windows PC! Windows Mobile on a Palm device? YUK!
I think if you WATCH The videos in previous engadgets posts - you will see the truth.
Apple is next!

If it did not had that sqr screen it would be a very large device or it would not had that cool keyboard
This phone has one major thing over the HP 6500 - WM 5.0!
It delivers on the POS Treo advantages (one handed usage, non-volatile OS), while adding other features such as "push" activesync, and a pile of API changes. If I had to choose between a wm2003se HP phone, and a WM5 palm phone, Palm, here I come.
Surur
question is, why the ugly battery cover?
i've been saying this for months, nobody believes me.
#2: the OS resets itself when you sync data to the phone that is corrupted or does not match the phone model in your backup folder.
try hard resetting your device, renaming the backup folder in your palmone// directory and resyncing the device.
that usually fixes that problem 99% of the time, the other 1% have a bad phone.
My theory as to why the HD677 id wasn't covered up in the first place and remains still visible: this is a publicity stunt from Palm or Verizon to get people hyped about this. If it is, it certainly worked!
No matter what Treo does, it can never compete with a BlackBerry.

I don't know what makes me more excited....that the WM Treo 670 is real or the fact that Verizon will likely get it! :D
Given the bigger type sample from the "The phone has not been activated." image, it's clear that the resolution of the phone is 240 pixels across and, presumably, 240 pixels high. That sucks. I'll stick to my nice, high-res 320x320 650, thanks.
I was scepticle for a minute too, thinking "what if this is a screen shot." But then i looked at the hardware buttons, if he faked those, then he is DAMN good. The hardware buttons seal the deal for me, this puppy is for real!
I wish it ran Linux
I hope this is what the Verizon Girl was reffering to when I returned my 650 this week and she suggested waiting a couple weeks for some announcements. I was asking her advice about trying anouther one or waitng for something better. I sure hope so but I'm a bit skeptical they would 1) roll in such a major change and only make a small incremental change to the model number 2) Even more surprising if Version had it out of the chute. I hope they prove me wrong.
I alos hope it has a better radio in it, the reception just wasn't cutting it here in steamboat Springs even thought our service is generally excellent.
Dear Verizon,
Thank you for, yet again, plastering your vomit-inducing, poorly designed, insulting-to-real-designers branding/logo all over your new Treo. I believe that heavy heavy discounts on your equipment is in order since your customers are basically walking billboards, especially with a logo on the REAR of all the phones as well. I thought this was a practice limited to your cellular phone business, but when an installer slapped 3 (three) big Verizon stickers on the small *power adapter* for my T1 line's router, I believe graphic designers all over the world felt the anguish.
What does Verizon even mean? Sounds like a disease - "Hey man, ya know my Verizon is acting up again, but I just slapped some ointment on that shiz and it died down."
Indeed, perhaps some ointment on your "shiz" is exactly what is in order, maybe it would cover up the logo. Funny thing is, I'd probably be a Verizon customer instead of a Sprint customer, but as a graphic designer, my soul could not take owning a product with the worst branding ever unleashed on this planet.
Love,
*j!
If the Treo design has a center button (its like ok button) why they add an extra OK button?
I still have some questions about the photos, because they can take some screentshots from a PocketPC and view it in full screen mode in that Treo prototype as I did it in this post: http://www.pdamexico.net/content/view/78/ I put some PalmOS 6 screenshots in my Zire 71.
The center button is for "Action" while the "Ok" is to minimize/close application windows.
On that first pic, both radio buttons are selected. Must be a bug.
Nice phone though.
This would be awesome, I like the Treo 650, but hate the Palm OS!
#31: she was probably saying you should wait a few weeks until they got devices with the new firmware update on them to fix MMS issues, etc.
if we had a treo running WM5 coming down the chute, we would know about it... considering WM5 is a farstep from Pocket PC 2003SE.
Your "verizon girl" is still a sales rep, and doesn't know jack about product releases, most of the time they dont tell reps about phone releases until the day it comes out. Infact they did that exact thing with the 650... reps knew it was coming out... but didn't tell them when or give a timeline because they knew sales would slump on the old device if they told the reps when it was releasing.
I'm looking at a 650 right up next to these pix, and I have to say, I think these are a fake. There are too many similarities to the 650. The only thing that is really different is the middle row of buttons above the keyboard, and even those look fake to me. Also the back speaker section is uncharacteristicly large and the camera section looks fake.
note to self there is no treo 670 i have scoped out verizon and they only have the 600 here in NJ
this guy is full of shit!
i have the 650 from sprint pcs and the keys are the same i think he added a extra key and relabled it with windows. there is a program called Zlauncher which will change the palm os look to windows xp or mac osx or make your own.
I have installed the macintosh osx look on palm and it is identiical. note this guy is full of crap don't let it full ya.
I asked verizon if they had the 650 they told me they not have it yet they were so surprized they went to look at my sprint phone to see what was new.I also have heard there is a hack to maybe install windows moble on a palm but i have yet to discover it. i think this guy played with the rom settings and they called his treo 670 lol.
THIS IS A FAKE!!! ITS A CASE swap!! You guys are all fools for falling for this crap. Look at it, its a POS. This thing is fake!! Until I see a video of the user touching the screen and launching apps, its A FAKE!!
FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE!!!
of corse you say it's pretty similar, hence why it's a treo 670 instead of maybe... 700. they change the OS and add in a better camera and EV-DO...
Let's hope it's a fake.
I wish ALL Windows versions, of every size, were fake. If you have any experience with other OS's vs. Windows, and are able to make money, be productive, appreciate good GUI design, and post intelligently please write here:

I just don't buy it.
-Why would Verizon be the first to get a new Treo anyways? Woulnd't P1 want to introduce a GSM world phone above all others? GSM phones can be marketed all over the world and be sold unlocked and unbraded for maximum P1 profit. Not to mention all of the GSM carriers that will pickup the model on release. It just doesn't make sense!
Besides, after release to a global market a buzz will erupt. And then all of the CDMA customers can get Treo's : - )
Fake, real, who cares? Another brick with Winblows on it.
Was it suddenly less of a brick when it ran POS? And is the Motorola Q a brick also?
There is something fishy-looking about the close-ups of the screen. The Pixel grid effect doesn't seem to line up with the pixels of the OS. Plus there are some funny morie patterns on other shots.
It's possible that the person has taken a photo of the Treo with the screen turned off, so that the highlights/glare stand out well on the black screen, then used a screenshot or custom made image with the "overlay" or similar layer effect in Photoshop, as well as adding some pixel grid effect to make it more realistic (if they did, then that's the give away, because it wasn't done properly).
to the next 20 who doubt the authenticity, since i didn't catch the first 20...you have no idea who this guy is...do your homework. be glad we have this info and understand the fact that if the wrong person finds out this guys next post picture might be of his final paycheck. thx for another one roc
Only morons buy Windoze devices.

It's a visual thing that works with the post's content. Sigh. The poseurs: always imitating, never innovative.

>> "Only morons buy Windoze devices."
Yep. And only fags buy Macs. Communists use Linux. Homos use iPods. And fat Republicans drive Cadillacs. Yes sir, everything in life falls into neat little labeled categories. Facts are for fools! Generalizations rule!
And yes..that WAS sarcasm.
fools! this is for real. even palm execs said in nov 2004, that they are open to the idea of windows on a treo, the pics and videos all look authentic, and I've been using palm for 5yrs now, but win 05 mobile is a much better os than palm is and I can't wait for this to come out. funny I lost my 650 2 weeks ago and I've waiting for the benq p50 but I think I'll wait longer for the 670
something like this would only happen right when i finally break down and get the audiovox smt5600. i wanted a new phone and realized that windows mobile was rather awesome so i finally pull the trigger and now its too late for me to wait and get the 670. damn you palm!
Well.. If it's not a hoax (showing a picture or video of a Windows Mobile in full screen mode) would someone please comment on the fact that the keylock-dialog is _exactly_ the same as on a regular Palm 5 Treo. Wouldn't it be a Windows Mobile dialog???
Just my 2 Cents..
a) Its NOT exactly the same. Its in fact been updated with a clock
AND
b) there is NO WM keylock software as standard on PPC-Phones. Its an OEM responsibility, and they would use their own software.
It only makes it more credible.
Confirmed with internal source (a friend working in Palm) it's a fake ;)
I'd like to see a mobile OSX...any rumours?
1. Keylock with OS 5 look
2. As if the treo wouldn't be multibootable. If datasheets on the Treo's mobile chipset were to be released tomorrow, Linux would get ported ASAP.
3. HTC makes the Treo. HTC also makes Windows Devices. Duh.
4. Woopee doo if we see Cobalt booting. It only proves point 2.
5. Palm taking out a WinCE license will show very clearly on their stockmarket reports of both Palm and MS.
5. Palm will release a Cobalt device long before a Linux one - because they have the Cobalt kit so they can do what they want.

Your pot head buddy from the mail room doesn't qualify as a credible source.
As for the rest of you clowns who say its a fake, hold your treo up to the pic of this 670.
Now use the matching and comparing skills you learned in 1st grade...
EVERY SINGLE BUTTON ON THIS PHONE IS DIFFERENT WHEN COMPARED TO A 650!
Now i know this is hard for you all. It's like the time you came home and caught the neighbor banging your wife. But you will survive this you didn't actually mary the Palm OS.
@ Surur
No. The 650 is a brick too.
Yes. The Q is even bigger (though thinner).

LMAO..... pwn'd
see i have osx on mine it's just a shell

If this is true, it would mean that MS has pretty much monopolized yet another market. That's a very bad thing. It means less choice for consumers, and higher prices once MS has determined that they have no real competition.
whoever asked for some videos of it, i got some. you gotta have quicktime installed for them. here they are:

its for real people. enjoy.
PHug, that's funny... Last time I sat down with an exec at Palm (2 months ago), he responded in a very quiet manor when asked about a Windows Mobile based Treo. He very nicely said, it would be an interesting idea, wouldn't it... Shortly after our meeting, he came up and asked my opinions on wether I thought it would sell well and my impressions of Windows Mobile. Why would a Palm Exec ask me about Windows Mobile? I'm fairly confident this is real. I'm interested to see how long it takes for the GSM version to come out.
Real or not... back and forth.
From this person's perspective, it looks real, but just to be 100% certain, it would be really nice to see this phone, in a video next to a Treo 650, with both phones having some sort of screen interaction.
Maybe this is the reason I held off getting a Treo. I'm hoping for a WM 5.0 Treo.
lol, the third image from top is just nuts. why on earth do one need to activate the os on a phone?
give me the palm os any day over this joke!
I love it! M$ is taking over.
I think this is the real thing because it has a button with the windows logo on it. This is great because I was thinking of getting a Treo sometime but was upset that it didn't use Windows Mobile and now it's like my dreams have come true, so I'm going to wait for the Treo 670 to come out before I get one.
#72, the OS doesn't need to be activated, the phone does. Verizon activates their phones over the air, and you can't use it until they do.
My God. I replaced my Treo 600 with an Audiovox XV6600, but I sorely miss the Treo formfactor. This would give me the best of both worlds, easily. I don't love the square screen, but if it's compatible with most programs, I'll deal. I want it. Now.
Also auf deutsch f?lle.
Das kanns doch nicht sein, wieso zum Teufel sollte Palm jetzt seine Smartphones mit einem Microsoft Betriebssystem ausliefern. Palm OS macht doch gerade Palm aus!
In English:
Unbelieveable, why the hell should Palm Inc. launch a smartphone with a microsoft os running on it. The Palm OS is what represents the company Palm!
Buying a phone is kind of an emotional thing...
There are in deed people who "love" their Palm as their personal, reliable, *PalmOS-driven* digital assistant.
These people will not "break their marriage" to PalmOS and thus will not buy that phone.
I'm couning me in.
//Treo600 user
I cannot beleive that after numerous hi-res photos and even video footage the Palmiacs are STILL in denial about the Treo 670. It's real and it runs Windows! Deal with it! they've been talking about this for months. None of us should be surprised.
I, as a former Treo 600 and 650 user, welcome the WM5 Treo 670 with open arms. Palm OS sucks, folks. Palm's market share has been in perpetual decline for years. I've used PalmOS for years, while watching Windows Mobile mature with envy, and finally, I'll have my dream smartphone.
The Treo 670 will be THE smartphone of 2006, with or without support from the Palmheads. It might very well be the product that pulls Palm out of the red.
Want PalmOS? Go buy a LifeDrive! For being a "revolutionary" product, they sure discounted it fast!
Folks, i'm pretty sure this is the real thing. Remember Steve Jobs also surprised us when he told us some prototype Mac machines were running on Intel cpu before. I guess this is just the same. I would say this is a good move for Palm. It can sure save the company from the declining sales of palm os devices.
When do you all think it will be available? End of this year? I can not recall how long it was from the time news of the 650 was "leaked" to when it was available...
Guys -
Look at the Windows/OK buttons on this device. Then look at the picture of the HTC/Audiovox Apache.
Notice any similarities? This Treo, like the Verizon RAZR, is a fraud.
FAKE!
I have been a PPC user for years, then converted to Palm with the Treo 650 solely for the form factor and convergence of the unit. I love the one handed operation, but sorely miss running multiple applications. I eagerly await the Treo 670 so I can go back to a faster, multi-tasking unit !!
I have a VZW 650. When i compare it side by side. Every single button is different. The bottom corners are round on the 670 and not on the 650. All 6 hard buttons and the 5-way nav. are different size and shape. My only question is VZW was the last, by far, to cary the 600 and the 650, why would they be the first to carry the 670? Just some thoughts. I hope it is true.
Holy Crap!!! ALL RUMORS NO RELEASE DATE!!!! I've had the TREO 600 for a year now and wouldn't go to 650 since I heard rumors about this 670 in June. But I'm getting tired of the screen on the 600 and even more tired of waiting for the actual release date. All mighty above, WHEN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would like to know the difference between the 650 and 670?
I have a Dell Axim. Anyone know if all the 2003 Pocket Windows program will work on the 700w?
