Doom ported to the iPod
It's a little sluggish on the framerate side, and definitely clumsy on the input end of things, but you bet yer
sweet potatoes the iPod Linux guys got Doom ported to the little white MP3 player that could. Sure, it's not quite
Doom on the Nokia 770, but you take what you can
get.

Does it only work on colour ipods?
Ryan Block @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
From their page:
"It is playable on the Ipod photo.
It "works" on 1-4G's and Mini 1G/2G"
Best,
Ryan

God...what next? Waterproof shuffles?
aj @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
man thats sweet
Shanko @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
I can already imagine how slow it is. I wouldn't even try to play it. It's probably hell trying to turn corners.
Simon @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
LOL ... looks like they didn't rescale it yet, so the right side is mostly off screen ... but I guess it realy doesn't make much of a difference regarding playability ;)
Doom, the new 'Hello World'.
Sander @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Its pretty funny how Doom seems to be the holy grail of portability. Once a new device is released, its just a timer until Doom is ported.
College Student @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
gotta love Doom...ah sweet childhood.
Pat @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
That's pretty nice. I be the controls are way difficult...
locknroll @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
WoHOO!
Now if we could only port midnight club 3:(
YourTechSupport @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Yay! Not the iPod is officially something worthy of my affection and praise! Granted, it's likely hell to play. Let my know when someone ports Super Mario.
Porta Belle @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Is doom portable to a portajohn or a porta potti?
Joseph @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
How do u download it, where, and how much is it?
Porta Belle @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
"How do u download it, where, and how much is it?"
The porta potti I'm using has a built in LCD screen with a wireless keyboard that one can rest in their lap while using the toilet. Porta potties usually run anywhere between $200 to $800 depending on features and accessories.
v1p3r @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
YourTechSupport, there's a fully funtional gameboy emulator.
Hassan @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
This is cool but I'm a bit scared of fiddling with the software in my photo. I really don't want all my music to disapear so I'll wait until this linuwstuffs becomes more userfriendly.
Jebus @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
I still prefer the Nokia 770. Because, Doom on the Nokia 770 runs well.
Orbberius @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
I'd rather play Doom on my toaster than on an iPod.
PS: The darkness controller would handle turning and the ejector lever would control firing your weapon. I am currently considering what button to use for walking.
Max Glenister @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
couldn't help but think of this http://www.ipodhacks.com/article.php?sid=741

just hold the top part of the clickwheel down (north)
having said that.. I think it's retarded porting games to these non-gaming devices.. it's just so freakin lame.. the iPod works because it's not trying to do everthing.. the games are basic, the photo program is simple and works with the clickwheel..
the lousy experience of playing games like doom with a clickwheel is the difference between Apple and the rest of the PC industry. Apple knows its a shitty experience and doesnt try to accomplish it.. the PC industry says 'well it may be shit but it's still a game.. so it must be a little fun?'
apple: "but you already have devices that are made purely for gaming.. surely you can see that an ipod game will always be inferior to what you already have on the PSP or DS, etc"
PC industry 'yea but we're geeks'
Fortyseven @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
We can get DooM to run on it, but not OGG support. I love it. :(
er_or @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
is is that bad..based all the comments before, like everyone should never try this.
heh
John Laur @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
It's also funny because the original DOOM was highly optimized for X86 and included tons of assembly language. What gets ported to all of these fun little devices is not actually DOOM but clones of DOOM that have had all the optimizations removed. If you painstakingly went back through and recoded some of the slow parts in heavily optimized assembly language, the iPod would probably see a huge jump in speed!
Simon @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
mike, are you saying that linux geeks are the pc industry? lol ... that's even more funny than your response to Orbberius.
You realy should learn to read and think, *before* writing.
This is not about 'playing' on the iPod, it's about what's possible ... you surely know nothing about being a geek.
Doom, simply cool.
Fappy @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
i bet its just a slideshow of jpegs. how can it be powerful enough to run doom? apple tells us its not even powerful enough to render 2 music files simultaneously to allow cross-fading tracks
kevin @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Anyway I can transfer this to my ipod? I am using Windows, not Linux.
Lasica @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
25 - running Doom takes much less computing power than crossfading 2 mp3s. A 486 @ 66 MHz is good enough to play Doom with full details on while it can hardly play a single mp3 with good quality.
lobo @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Fortyseven: OGG is supported, nor WMA or AAC
google for 'floydzilla'
bye
MAIcrosoft @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
they should port ParaPara Paradise for the Ipod . _.);;'
Dull @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
No electronic is safe until we port-over DOOM & decorate it with Hello Kitty.
Kibiyama @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
@26: I'm just guessing, but I think the iPod is running Linux. I would assume you could transfer it to your iPod just fine on Windows.

With the simple layout that ipod has, it makes more sense to port a tetris instead
Mr. Clean @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
34 - Tetris is alreadly ported, it comes with the lastest nightly which also runs off of iPod linux. You can fine the nightlys here www.ipodlinux.org/builds
Just download the bottom-most podzilla.gz
I hope that sounds right...kind of tired.
I'll be putting doom on as soon as I can as right now it seems the iPod linux site is down.
Nathan Otis @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
According to the screen shots, it plays "Doo".
Timmay! @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
Dude, that's not Doom, it's Wolfenstein! God, how many times are they gonna confuse the two!?
derek gilland @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
does this work on the new ipod nano or are they going to make one for it and how do u download this in to your ipod if it does work it the nano thanks.
Nort @ Dec 19th 2005 1:02AM
M8 its DOOM! i also have it on my iPod you need to download a linux server on your iPOD and it works soo good.. you just need to try it a few times to know the controls its so easy and its fast :) well there is an movie on the internet :: www.ipodlinux.org >> DOWLOADS >> GAMES >> DOOM and there it is :)
