More OS X on plain old x86 boxes
We don't know whether Justin Nolan—who answered the call of UNEASYsilence's recent OS X Intel challenge—used the
same exact techniques as we saw before to do it, but it
looks like he too has joined the elite ranks of those running OS X on his PC laptop (in this case a Vaio TR2A, how
appropriate). Of course, these laptops won't run Rosetta since none have SSE3, but if you want to talk straight up
functional x86 OS X, this is your biz.

Anyone have a torrent link or ISO??????
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
geeze, don't you know how to use google? pfff!
So just so I don't get all excited...this only works on actual Intel CPUs and not just any x86 processor right?
This works on AMD as well:
http://www.xplodenet.com/
(from http://www.symplification.com/node/220 )
not sure what pot engadget is smoaking but rosetta G3 translation DOES work:
http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=144
(this URL compares the universal Xbence results forced to use G3 to the native x86 xbence results... notice that native xbench still tries to test altivac)
then of course there is the ever growing HCL that *gasps* includes multiple entries for AMD native running.

So can this be used as a dual boot on a PC?
I'd love to have XP and OS X both on my 3.2 gig processor...
"So can this be used as a dual boot on a PC?" Seems so and there's nothing stopping people from adapting the final version when this comes out.
Beauty... I am gonna try this as soon as I get home. Maybe I'll get one of these http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4280824 to go with it. Has anyone here done this? I know it says it needs its own independent HD to run on--I wonder if Windows could still recognize that? As in could I run OS X on my 300 gig, and also store files on that same HD accessible through XP? Or even install apps to that 300 gig drive accessible through both OS X and XP?
hmmm.
the Celeron D is a dirt cheap processor and u can score a 3Ghz one for less than 90 bucks.
it had SSE3 also.
i wonder if anyone has gotten it to boot off one of these babys?
Is it just OS X Tiger or have the iApps also been found out in the wild for x86 now?
i believe that this Tiger install includes all the iApps included in iLife. iPhoto,iMovie, ect.
Finally, albeit a little indirectly, Apple puts it's money where it's mouth is. For so long Mac OS has been touted as being superior to windows (mind you i have both iBooks and PC destkops, and I personally don't think it is) and as a result, i've asked the question (rhetorically, mind you) If Mac OS is so good, why not sell the OS to run on whatever hardware?
Thanks to the efforts of people mentioned in the article and the open source core of OSX, Mac OS can finally be compared to Windows running on the same hardware.
I think it's a good thing.
They really should sell it as an alternative to Windows on PC hardware - Bet they generate a lot more revenue (of course I know i'm going to hear the chorus of Apple being a hardware company etc..)
Great Job!
mingistech: Indeed they have. In fact, they've patched the kernel so it'll run even w/o SSE3.
I there a sel-contained, ootb release yet that doesn't require any manual intervention? I've becom far to stin in recent years to bother with this till it's easy.
Damn, WTF happen with that post?! I=Is, sel=self, become=become, and stin=staid. Sheesh.
If I could run OSX on my Intel platform, I would buy a copy of OSX and use it for almost everything except gaming.
#11, Apple doesn't sell OSX to run on other computers because it's not a software company. Most of the revenue comes from computer sales (among other things)
When the Intel stuff hits, they need to start selling motherboards. You could then get the ram, HD, video card, processor etc. by other means.
The rest would be integrated.
It would have an apple-tested Intel Chipset, along with apple-standard integrated NIC, Firewire controller, Serial-ATA etc.
The only driver you would have to make sure to get would be for the video card, and apple has been using Nvidia and ATI for a long time already so were cool there too.
I've got it on a second disc at the moment. Boots slowly, and works slowly (though I only have 512mb RAM and an athlon 64 2800+). Wireless NICs don't work, so no network access, and sound doesn't work either (no drivers). Not much use at the moment unless you have specific processors/mobos/chipsets.
From my experience, Windows users (like me) typically use more software then they legally own. Apple users tend to own most of their software they use. If Apple sold a x86 verison for all PCs, they would loses tons of money to the Windows users who love to "share" their software with the world.
And so it begins... http://www.spymac.com/gallery/show_photo.php?picid=420891&size=big
Finally, albeit a little indirectly, Apple puts it's money where it's mouth is.

Read Cringely's take on this.. a few months ago. He contends Apple's 'switch' announcement.. which could have been made privately, and scarecely affects consumers, was make publicly as a signal to give hackers about a year to make an OS X version for x86.
Why be so sneaky about it...? So MS doesn't freak out and think they have competition. If they thought they had to compete with someone, they'd yank Office and any other app they're currently developing (like... the crappiest version of MSN Messenger you've ever seen.. hehe)
Just speculation, hard to imagine Apple didnt know this would happen, shrewd guys.. nice move.. and thanks to all the hackers who did this.. you guys are really helping alot of people out..
As a Mac user, i'd love to see Vertical-Int. mac hardware.. and the option for OS X on x86... Marketshare will go up and the option to get a mac from Apple is always there..:)
16 - "among other things"
you mean that iPod thingy, it'll never take off. ;-)
I'm so happy this is out in the wild (i wonder who put it there- not a bitter / overexcited tester, its gotta be an inside job "patched to run w/o SSE3!). What does everyone think? Apple know how good thier OS is - so do we, the week Longhorn (hahah- Vista..) goes BETA (I've tried it, alpha, if that! Where's my clear type!) Apple pop out this beauty, all the geeks get in on it and overnight become switchers / more excited about Apple than on an average weekend. What do you think? Inside job?
wow what a gay picture. can the only thing mac zealots do is cry?
Is there any way to run this with S-ATA?
Yay, a pic of my laptop is on Engadget! For those looking for a guide on how I did it, I wrote one up here: http://www.360hacker.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=158
The guide is also on uneasysilence (with a ton more pics and videos), but their site to be completely hammered right now.
Here's a video of a Dell laptop being booted into OSX w/ instructions.
http://snipurl.com.nyud.net:8090/gw1x
http://www.360hacker.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1108
The video is coral cached so it should never run out of bandwidth.
Forgot the mention, you need to unzip the movie and then run it using VLC or QT. From my tests, running it straight from the browser crashes it every time.
Justin Nolan: Hey, that's awesome man! Congrats on getting it running, and thanks for the HOWTO. :-)
Do you (or anyone) know if ths image can be used in VM Ware? The process is dead-easy at this point, but I *really* don't want to reinstall Windows again (just did it and have, among other stuff, maybe 55 games@100 GB installed). I suppose I could Ghost the whole works, but 250 gigs is a lot of data. =)
xVariable, yes... the original img/torrent is actually MEANT for vmware! It was all the extra vmware files and config so you can just download it and run. This is just for taking it to the next step and installing that image natively.
Actually, after from perfunctory reading, I'm going out on a limb and say, yes, this is bootable in VM Ware.
/me rubs hands lasciviously. Oh, man, I can see it now: By the time I go back to class in February, I'll multibooting OS X, WXP SP2, and Fedora Core 4. (Yes, FC4. Have you tried it? It's *fast*, AND slick.) I'll be the envy of the campus! OK, um... maybe just the Comp. Sci. Dept. They are such dorks. =)

I'm with mack. I too am not sold..there's no way you can image "ghost" a machine without some trouble...even when ghosting diff windows machines. lets say comp "a" has a different chipset than comp "b" you have to ... or not even that. somthing as simple as a monitor... you still either "a" have to install drivers or "b" change the resolution and that's easy... here you have an operating system that started on reduced instruction set computing "RISC" ARCHITECTURE that's by motorola. and yet you can image a new drive and it works and what's up with the vmware files... if it's native why vmware... or even wine.. has anyone tried wine... with it.. i'm just not sold. x86 platform is a completely diff chip... it's like saying you can run windows on a ultra sparc "64 bit" processor... i'd like to see someone do that. Not without some tweaking i don't think it's possible even if apple is moving to the x86 platform. Read that on slashdot.org. But supposedly if the sse3 were an issue, which is only used for media and graphics enhancement... let's go back kiddies were talking like a 233 MMX processor...Oooo... big deal... you can "supposedly" use an amd chip... if this were true.
Justin: Looks like a cross-post. :-)
Man, I REALLY wish this Torrent would finish. Looks like no joy for me tonight (bed).
"Read Cringely's take on this"
actually, please don't read cringely's take on this. He's little more than flamebait, and ignorant besides.
It's great that you all love OS 10.4.2 I hope you love it a lot, because if it's running on any old computer that's as far as it'll ever get.
Carlo: Are you drunk, or just GROSSLY misinformed.
Honestly, c'mon.
xVariable: Niether, I just wanted a real comment from someone that actually reads and know's what there doing... rather than just reading cut and paste googled answers... be serious now... i mean that statements i've made are so obviously ignorant... i'm only left to wonder, i can sound that good at being stupid and misinformed "am i"?
Ah, so it's drunk, then. ,;)
xVariable:
pretty much lol don't you love it.
ah yes... i finally got OS X up and running on my Shuttle XPC. :)
and i'd like to give a shout out to all the Mac users here...
sorry for bashin ur OS for so many years.... i'm very impressed.
Hey, this is the first time that I post anything in here. I have wanted to buy a Mac but I just bought a Vaio. It came with two HD; one is 10gb and other is 36 gb. Do you think I could get the Mac on the bigger HD and leave Windows on the smaller one. I would probaly just be using Windows for games. Also if I was to do that how do I let my comp know which HD I want it to boot from.
I am no geek so sorry if my question is kind of stupid, but I would love to have an OS on my PC as well as XP.
THanks
gasp, does this mean cherryOS is really dead in the water?
"It came with two HD; one is 10gb and other is 36 gb."
Are you sure thats not just one drive, with two partitions?

or, just for the fun of it, you could save up your money, purchase a Mac, and actually support the company, rather than actively assisting in its slow demise.

Pardon my ignorance, but does this mean os x could run on the oqo?

Yes, I got it to work too using the VMWare image, native. I just followed the Ubuntu method using dd to copy the image to a drive.
It's very fast after you remove a few files. The only problem is that I have SSE2 only. This means no CoreImage and Rosseta. Also, there are artifacts in the menu fading, but everything else looks smooth, like the genie effect.
Safari works, but it crashes on many sites.
I'm running it on a P4 1.6 Northwood, 512MB RAM, Geforce 3 TI200(!).
"or, just for the fun of it, you could save up your money, purchase a Mac, and actually support the company, rather than actively assisting in its slow demise."
word, this is what i had to do.
How do I change displays? It keeps locking up on me with the -v option
