PSP v2.0 firmware upgrade might happen this week, might not
Well, it's officially August 22nd in every time zone now, which means that Sony didn't make good on its earlier promise to release version 2.0 of the PSP's firmware here in North America during the week of August 15th. We still don't know when they'll get around to it, but check out this incredibly non-committal response reader Mike S. got from Sony when he emailed them asking about the delay:
Hello Mike,
Thank you for writing us.
We do not know the exact date of the 2.0 system update for the PSP(TM) portable entertainment system at this time. We recommend that you continue to visit the link below during the week of August 22, 2005 to check for the latest updates on the PSP System Update page.

The funny thing is that it's not like anyone even cares all that much — how many people really bought the PSP expecting a steady stream of firmware upgrades? — it's more that Sony just seems to be needlessly jerking everyone around right now. Besides, if you need a PSP with a web browser that badly, you've probably already installed the Japanese version of the firmware by now.
UPDATE: They're now promising it'll be "available during the week of August 22nd."

ppl need to learn to be patient, this update is free, sony doesn't have to release it, but they are.
Well its either firmware or games...and we're not getting any games either.
But then again its no big deal. The browser sucks; the only way to battle this is make a PSP keyboard and I sure as hell wouldn't care that around.
Share pictures...woot...not really.
Customize wallpaper; you were able to do this before...now there is just a menu item for it.
Good luck waiting though...or you could finally give in and install the JPN 2.0 and save yourself from the anxiety, tension and hype.
I´ll rather ask for when the GOOD games are coming out.
I could wait patiently forever....Because I dont own a PSP.
they dont HAVE to, but its inconsiderate of a major company like that to say something is coming out a certain week, then it not doing so, and not at least letting the consumer know
HAHA! You're right, people don't cares that much.
That's the point! Sony wants US to download the JP version of 2.00, too many people are sending there PSP's back to them because of small deformalities like dead pixels, shaded rejoins, etc. Sony doesn't wanna lose money so they are screwing with US so we can void all our warranties! Sony is smart and they are actually getting what they want!
Well GOD DAMN MOTHER FUCKERS! What are those cunts doing!!!!!! RAAAAARRR!!!
My guess is that Sony decided to let people hack on the Japanese version of the update for a while. You know, to see if someone figures out how to run homebrew on it or whatever. They could then shore up that hole for the US version... Just a guess.
Yeah, Sony is voiding our warranties. That makes a lot of sense. They love losing customers. It's not like they've been around for a while, they're like a brand new company right? There's no way they understand the importance of customer trust. They're not doing it on purpose, they just don't really care if they lag and they're probably tweaking bugs.
It doesn't matter anyway. I could care less when 2.0 ships. The really important day is when 2.0 is cracked, so I can run my homebrew and have a built in browser. Or perhaps, Sony is working on some ultra-draconian tactic to force everybody to upgrade, even if you don't run the new software. That'd be great of them, wouldn't it
"I could care less when 2.0 ships."
-Don't you mean "couldn't"?
If you could care less then that means you care, if you couldn't care less then that means the obvious.
It'll probably be with GTA:LCS. And you probably won't be able to play the game without it.
it's called sarcasim, dmitri
I think you mean sarcasm...
I bought the PSP expecting a steady stream of games. Where the heck are all the games?
well 2.0 is closer to being cracked now that an exploit has been found by yoshihiro. there's a proof of concept video out.
**Couldn't and Could can be used interchangeably, in the phrase
I could/couldn’t care less
Please don’t correct someone if you’re not sure you are correct.
Well I guess I am the only one DYING to get my hands on the 2.0 update for the US. I would like to download the japanese 2.0 firmware but I do not want to void my warranty. My PSP was a b-day present and my brother also got me a 3 year warranty with it.. like hell im voiding that.
well fuck. I made the psp update page my home page so dont have to check everytime i turn on my computer.
LOL! (Dmitri)
Apparently it is OFFICIALLY coming out this week SCEA posted this
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=psp&message.id=806673
But since when have we belived anything that they say?
Peter: the only reason why that would be interchangeable would be because people couldn't care less to use it properly.
re: the delay -- I posted something on the boards on the Playstation site about this. I asked that if there is a legitimate reason to delay the release in the states then be open about it and explain why. When people understand, they may not like the answer, but at least they'll have something to go on. Being kept in the dark fosters mistrust and anger.
What they've forgotten is that they are only yanking around the good people, those who care and want to play by the rules, get the official update, and *not* void their warranty...despite the *hordes* of users that keep telling them hey, just use the japanese update.
These are their loyal customers, and they're giving them the sharp end of the stick. Anyway. The thread there got locked almost immediately, so I guess that says...um...absolutely nothing. Which I guess is my point about Sony.
are you 100% positive that if i download the japanese 2.00 that i will be able to redownload the us version

Sure it's free. And if Sony hadn't promised it would be available on a certain date, then move it to another date, then promise it on another date, none of us would be complaining.
But overall, this isn't helping Sony's competitive market advantage by not delivering on something, even if that's free to current and future owners.
This coming month the three games I've been waiting for come out:
Final Fantasy
GTA
Madden 06
Rejoice PSP Fans because soon we'll have kickash games to play and wont care whether or not our PSP browses! We're all gettin riled cuz we're bored with the PSPs. I have had the two packaged games since April because there's nothing good comin out really til these three (I have Twisted Metal which is good and 989 NBA which blows). So yea I CANNOT wait for September :D:D:D:D:D:D
The PSP Firmware 2.0 Upgrade for the North American market will be available during the week of August 22nd.
Designed to compliment the comprehensive entertainment experience of games, movies, music, photos and wireless connectivity provided by the revolutionary portable device, the firmware 2.0 upgrade will allow users to take advantage of the unit’s built-in Wi-Fi capability and wirelessly search the Internet from Internet Access Points or hot spots. The firmware 2.0 upgrade will be available for download directly to a PSP using a Wi-Fi connection or downloaded to a PC from http://us.playstation.com/psp and transferred to a PSP through a USB cable.

& PSP Dood,
sarcasm is one of the hardest aspects of the english language to grasp. If it will help you ESL guys...imagine someone saying "as if" before the whole "i could care less".
Sorry Thomas but the final fantasy game you are refering to is actually a movie (although this isn't clear on the sony website) The game is scheduled for later on in the year and its called crisis core : Final Fantasy 7. The umd movie final fantasy 7:advent children is coming out in september. I was very confused about all this till i visited

for more info.
I wish Sony would release a firmware upgrade for my TV. Seriously.
I think the main reason why people are so hacked off at Sony is due to the fact that with the exception of the initial launch of the device, the hype has been so minimal since, they're looking for something new and exciting. The total number of games out for the PSP is pathetic. How many people can stomach paying $20-25 for a movie that can only be watched on the PSP? With the exception of Madden 06, and GTA, what other titles have made any sort of news?
If there was a steady stream of good games for the $250 device, then I don't think people would mind. Instead, everyone is hanging on this little hack web browser and the ability to put your own pictures on the background. I need more than that.
Burnout is coming out for it... that should be awesome. I don't have a PSP, because I have absolutely no use for it, but if I was still in HS that'd be sweet to be able to play burnout during class/bus ride/study hall. I'm in college now and if I'm going to play games during class I'll just skip and play them in my room ;-)
GUYS YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE 2.0 Update with your PC and transfer it to your psp. heres the link.
http://files.pspupdates.com/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,51,904
comments on that webpage say it doesnt work but all u have to do is create a new folder in your "Game" folder, which is on your psp and drag the eboot file in to update file...but first u must rename the 2.0eboot.pbp file to just eboot.pbp. Then simply run ur psp and go to the memory stick option under the "Game" tab and update ur psp....
thats all
if ur having trouble just email me.
Is it me, or does engadget just have a personal vendetta against Sony? Who really cares?
I'd hardly say we have a vendetta, we've given Sony loads of press (both positive and negative) about the PSP. In fact, most of the time it's Nintendo fans saying that we're biased in favor of Sony, not the other way around.
I heard the delay was due to Sony trying to find a partner for Search...my guess is they are shopping around to find the most $$$/rev share with the search engines.
Saw it here: http://www.threadwatch.org/node/3548
Quick question and a bit off-topic (sorry I haven't been able to Google the answer)
Is there a way to get the emulators to work with Firmware 1.5 and a Mac?? Apparently I need to use a program called KXploit I downloaded but it seems to be a PC-only thing. :(
#37: What you need to do is download what they call "pre-built" packages for the emulators. It'll download a zip (I know, the zip format kills you guys ;-) archive containing the two folders. One's usually titled "ProgramName" and the other "ProgramName%." If you transfer those directly to the psp in the game folder, it will work. You can find those at places like pspupdates. BTW, if it's a newer build, it may have something like "Progra~" and "Program______________________1" or such. That's just to hide the corrupted icons.
tomorrow... 8/23
Hmmm... I hope the delay was because of a discovered security flaw in the Japanese 2.0, in which case I'll just wait until that version is cracked, then ugrade to it instead of the US 2.O.
...BTW does anyone know if the 0.7 version of Fastloader (you know, the one that lets you load a UMD disc from inside the program itself) lets you bypass a game's bios version check? ...that way, we'd be able to play any future game regardless of the bios update it asks for...hmmmmm! I'm all excited about that!!!!
how is this news?
here's a few for you:
superintelligent robots may be in your home by next year, or maybe not.
we'll have flying cars by 20__, or maybe not.
NEWSFLASH: we might find life on mars, or might not.
this just proves how sony is with their products everything they do ends up dissapointing everyone....like the ps2 and soon everyone will be dissapointed by the ps3
dont call me a fanboy but fuck what is it with engadget busting sony's balls all the time? they hardly ever preview matsushita or toshiba, but just drags sony down all the time. then on the other hand they praising samsung and lg for doing nothing...tell where the logic is? yeah they late...its called hype and you guys are falling for it, hook line and sinker.
what is the big deal about 2.0, its a bunch of junk anyways, who cares about browsing on ur psp (obviously u cry babies) im way more happy with all of my old school games on it than some browser or wallpaper on it!!! those old school games actually brought life to my psp w/o them it would be collecting dust and not even 2.o would of done that! so for all u complaing "oh theres no games" well there are, theres a whole gangload of them out there, just not made by sony or for sony. its too bad u guys cant see that. and sorry for those with the 1.51 & 1.52
Its coming out on the 24th. http://stage-us.playstation.com/psp.aspx?id=SoftwareUpdate
