PSP v2.0 upgrade: So close, so close…
We know it's been a rough eleven days, but it looks like your wait is almost over — Sony just put up a placeholder
site detailing all of the new features of the North American version of the
PSP's new 2.0 firmware
upgrade. Nothing all that different from the Japanese version (surprise, surprise), but at least now you won't
technically be voiding your warranty. The download itself isn't available yet (we just tested and it's still v1.52), at
least not as of this writing, but we're guessing that it won't be long now.
[Thanks, SGOlsen]
Update: Ok, so apparently a bunch of people found a login (scea/scea—how original) to the PSP update site, which in return said something to the effect of the update being made available August 24th (i.e. tomorrow). Um, and now the PSP update site appears to have been taken down, removed, or is otherwise missing. Aiight, square one. And thanks to everyone who sent this in.

ya, it's up now.
There's a download link. Seems to work..
Actually, as of right now it's still not available. I just downloaded the upgrade and it's still 1.52. 2.0 still isn't live.
And if you go to the "official" upgrade page, they still have 1.52 listed.
http://www.us.playstation.com/psp.aspx?id=softwareupdate
it's out
http://stage-us.playstation.com/psp.aspx?id=SoftwareUpdate
Wait, no that link points to 1.52
duh, it's not out yet, if you download the file and install it it's 1.52.
oops sorry, next time I will read...
ITS OUT WOOO! BUT I don't have a PSP WAHHHHHHHH!
I think I figured out what the big delay was about. It was not technical, it was getting the lawyers to craft that Internet browser licence agreement and make sure it is airtight. Good ol' litigeous US of A!
Its up for real now http://stage-us.playstation.com/psp.aspx?id=SoftwareUpdate. they also labeled the update date as August 2003, 2005. i'm sure they meant August 23, 2005
Heh, if i tell them do you think they will give me a PSP?
Wait they took the update away! What the hell! it went back to 1.52!
I hate Sony!! I'm for weeks for them to put an update, first they say august 12, then the week of August 15, and now they finallly put it up on august 23 and they dont even put the right link! Sony get with it already! Also notice on the donload page it says "An update to PSP™ system features was made available on August 2003, 2005." wait a second, the update was available since 2003?
PeeSaPoop, if you take out the 0's in 2003, you get 23, hmm, i wonder what today's date is...
i have already tried the webbrowser at the GC Germany. It was the final version of the european firmware. i can tell you, the browser is really good, all site, except yourpsp.com, works.
The point is not that the date is "Close" there being sloppy and haveing poor consumer care. Might I bring up the stuck and dead pixel problems, again? Also the zeros no big deal, just a sign of them not careing and sloping this thing together like crap.
Seems to be ready. I tried the System Update on the PSP and it told me that I have the latest. I'm using the Japanese v2.0
Not really Robbie. Sometimes people just make stupid mistakes. Perhaps the person writing it was thinking about 2003 for some reason, and typed it accidentally. Notice it doesn't say that on any of the other pages. Cut them some slack, jeezsh.
you can download it now...
I cut someone who has had so much extra time "slack" Come on! They have had way to much time to screw up on the date and its clearly visable, can I say editors?
I JUST WANT THE FREAKING UPDATE :(
does it work yet?? i mean like, for real work... not this "we are going to put a link to v1.52 and call it the link to v2.oo just to kill mentally destroy people" crap.
it says it is for the 1001k only?
Wait, I just downloaded the file... and it's still 1.52 ?? Is this another typo.. including the Aug, 2003, 2005..????????? Sony! wtf ?????????
Mes, look up a little its not available, the pic takes you to a placeholder, if you want to get the instant it comes out, then open a browser go to playstation.com then psp the system update and refresh away!
Looks like it just got slashdotted. Gives me a server too busy
Errr I meant engadgeted not slashdotted :-D
rocafellaice - i was joking when i said that they put the wrong date, its just pretty funny cause it looks like someone hacked their site put the broken (wrong) links and agreements and stuff and forgot to put the right date
Screw it .. I'll just keep my Jsp. Version. Since Americans Version is hard to get.. Obviously, they are slacking...
Dunno. Says 2.0 now. And the file it downloaded says last modified 10:35am (MST). I won't know till I try to install it but it looks right.
The update page said 2.00- and now they changed it BACK to 1.52. Sony, apparently, thinks they're funny.
Not funny Sony.

yeah i think i downloaded and transfered v1.52 about 2394203948209 times in the past half hour, despite the fact that the site cleary states "v2.00"... no to mention how many times ive tried to update wirelessly
Note: August 2003, 2005. They probably meant to put 23 instead of 2003, so there's a probability of the update finally being released today.

Hurray. Now all the PSP f0xx0rs can stfu.
You people are retarded. It's a staging site. The real one will be up eventually. It's not the actual download site: it says stage.
You people are hilarious!
It's up!
No it's 1.52!
No it's up fro REAL now!
Nope thats 1.52...
Geeze people, get some brains! Look at the FILE before you say it's actually up:

wake up people. you will know when the update is available when you go to the official URL and it says v2.0. what you see in the link above is a staging site where they are waiting on the update to be ready and then they'll push this page live so that it is then the official update page. calm yourselves. this page could have been built weeks ago.
"f0xx0rs"?
ha- waht are you, a hacker or something?
someone spends too much time on the internet... :)
Ahhh, but if you were less stupid over two times today they put the "staged" version on their actual website, then removed it, of course.
Exactly. Thank you, Robbie.
Get a room.
I'll keep my japanese version
haha now im getting the "this page does not exist" message when i try to go to the update page. looks like we caught them in the middle of the release. should be up within the next few hours i would imagine?
Guys. How many times has it been said that that page was a stage. The actual update, when it's ready, will be HERE:
http://www.us.playstation.com/psp.aspx?id=SoftwareUpdate
How about you get a life, trilamb.
Which one were you thinking of when you gave yourself that name- the sweetheart with the special javelin?
Ok lets go over to key points to the "stage" YEs there is a staging site, and its easy to tell the diffrence, the people here are not morrons.
and 2) at some points in the day you WERE able to accsess the update via the real site, NOT the staged.
3) Also think about this, if it was just astaging and it never poped up on the site what would cause such an uproar? your stupid.
Also thats a great come back "get a room" becuase you said something irrational and thought you were smarter then everyone, so your ego was shot down.
The update isnt out yet and actually the stagic site was just taken down..it says it no longer exists..hopefully thats a good sign!
I really don't see the point in updating to 2.0 - Especially with all the great homebrew emulators available for the PSP. I've been rocking SNES, Genesis, NES, Sega Master System, and MAME games since there's nothing to play on the system right now.
Until these homebrews figure out a way to load around the 2.0 security tags..i'll keep mine at 1.5
yeah im gonna have to agree with Robbie and SuperProducer... the two guys who have actually been following this and know what they are talking about. we know the difference between the actual update page and the staging site, thank you :)
no update for me, 1.5 is fine with me, especially I can test out all these games before I buy, Fastloader yes. great loader.
Found over at boingboing Phil Torrone over at MAKE says not to update to 2.0. It's not worth it and only disable the homebrew stuff. Update at your own peril.
http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2005/08/psp_20_update_d_1.html
Yes, Superproducer, I like his chocolaty skin. Did you come up with YOUR name while producing lame, outdated back-packer hip hop? Or maybe you came up with it at a hemp rally? Dork.
Hopefully the next few hours... I feel like a crack addict the way I've been clicking refresh over here...
..or maybe I don't smoke weed OR produce "lame, outdated backpacker hip hop".
Maybe I work in film..? Maybe I own a chain of groceries..? lol
One of us made an educated guess.. the other didn't. I bet you got a hearty chuckle while typing...
Way to stereotype, my friend.

awww....it got all sad. I'll look for you at Whole Foods.
hmm... was up a little while ago... now requires a login?! says "playstation.com logon" but my playstation.com logon doesn't work! grr...
A hemp rally!!! Hahaha wait- did you actually just type that? Who even calls people "dork" and "retarded" except for teenage girls who live by TRL?
"Yer SUCH a dork Cindy!"
"Ohmigod shut up Katie- yer soooo, like, retarded"
Clown.
And to keep this relevant- it still says 1.52.. eh
Whole Foods- that was pretty clever.
And where will you be, by the corn.. or the cucumbers?
Don't forget to leave your javelin outside.
"Way to stereotype, my friend."
You need to apologize to TRL fans everywhere. Especially the ones that read engadget and are waiting to update their PSP firmware.
no... im pretty sure he'll be the guy putting our groceries into bags.
Nope..its only for people who work at Sony now..cheap ass bastards..
Bag 'em up, trilame...
Bag 'em up.
You seriously want to go with the "bag 'em up" joke? You don't want to go out like that, dog. I'll give you one more chance. Maybe you and Mark can ichat about it and brainstorm.
was that even a real comeback? looks like baby needs a nap.
you guys are fighting about a software update... a freaking software update. I'm sure there are dumber things to do with your life, but not many.
anyways, I updated to the japanese 2.0 when it came out. I like the browser because I don't have a laptop and sometimes I want to be prone while being online. never really had any intersest in playing old snes games... to each their own really. bring on the new games!
Give me one more chance? You've been shooting blanks all day- first I'm a "backpack hip-hop" producer then I'm a hippie, then I "shop at Whole Foods" (gasp! decent produce! of all things!)
Looks like I don't have to do anything but wait on this update. But thanks for helping pass the time... dog.
This is true al.. but the entertainment has helped pass the time.
And I want the American version, thank you.
New games.. yes.. but for the time being I'm still stuck on Silver in Hot Shots Golf- Dino Park is a beast.
I'm just working with what I got, boys. You gonna link your names, I'm gonna check 'em out. At least I didn't resort to respelling your name in silly ways (trilame?) or letting Conor Oberst feed me jokes.
..it all sounds like a plea to me.
Why dont you redirect some of that energy over to Sony's forums? I mean, either way you're on the losing side of the battle, but at least over there you've got a fighting chance...
or better yet, focus your efforts on finding out specifically when this update will be available. go call sony.
the user name is scea
n the password is scea
u can still go to the site w/ that login
Coner: That still links to the 1.52 update. If you download the file and open in a text editor, you will see that.
And now the page says it's available on August 24, 2005. Tomorrow, tomorrow, you're only a day away
It's about time. I was just about to install the JP firmware, too!
i know its still the old download...i was just trying to spread the word on the update tme n let ppl know how to get in (god i hope sony doesn sue my ass)
..I check this site everyday looking for interesting articles and stuff, and "PSP 2.0 Firmware" is in like 10 different article titles. What the heck is it? Didn't you buy your PSPs to play games, watch some movies and listen to some music? Why do you have to update the thing? It cost you $250 and now you're upgrading it? What the heck? You'd think $250 would give you everything you ever wanted - considering it's more than a PS2.
i know its still the old download...i was just trying to spread the word on the update tme n let ppl know how to get in (god i hope sony doesn sue my ass)
Checked the staged update page (http://stage-us.playstation.com/psp.aspx?id=SoftwareUpdate) and got this,
"We're sorry. The page you're looking for does not exist. Please use your browser's back button or return to the PlayStation.com home page."
At least they're up to something.
still works 4 me
actually it doesnt work 4 me now either....intresting...either they deleted it bcuz of all the commotion it was causing on the sony boards (they deleted every post remotley dealing with the stage site) or they are quite possibly doin sumthing, althought i would like to believe option 2 i bet its option 1
they even bleep out when u give a like to it (they "**bleep** the word stage)

ttyl fools
ur stupid i hate u mr man all that crazy mumbo jumbo about the update u can wait u sissy
i dont like u either
peace out
Sony taking to long! Hurry up!!!
It'll be out tomorrow because Namco Museum needs it and that comes out tomorrow... unless of course the Namco game gets delayed..! :)
I agree that their taking long, but that doesnt annoy me nearley as much as the constant resheduling and how they fail to inform the public, however, i understand that programming is a tricky thing to set a deadline for (anyone remeber windows 95 release?), and i can assure you that it is being held off for various legal, whetther they be legal (as rumored on sony forums) or delaing with file formats, in particular windows media formats and possibly flash (as i've heard from several costomer srvice reps over at sony)
According to the sony stage site (which i commented on earlier ^ ) It will be released the 24th, assuming this info was accurate (hopefully more accurate then the download on that same site) it will most likeley come out tommorow during the span of 9am-7:30pm cali time (that where scea's HQ are)
If anyone wants to discuss the topic in more further detail (im really bored) e-mail me at conman22@gmail.com, or aim sn ashbeelax22
also plz stop posting the details on the release, those are getting old quick
peace
how exactley does namco museum need it?
I just downloaded the Japanese version of the 2.0 firmware, but don't feel like using it and voiding my warranty. Does anybody know whether or not installing it will make everything on the PSP Japanese?
dont put it on its not worth the warrenty void
Sony is so stupid.
The Jap 2.0 is in english. It reads what your PSP's settings were (Language) and sets it to that, so english. I've been using the Jap 2.0 happily since it was released. Don't get why everyone is so slow to catch on to the trend.
Even if you void your warranty, thats only through sony, and even that is only until you install English 2.0 over it. Its not like if you install Jap 2.0 for five days that your warranty is forever void.
As for the Namco Battle Museum, I doubt that'll have 2.0 on it. Since 2.0 isn't even finished yet for American release, there's no way in hell they were able to include it when they produced the UMDs. It might come with 1.52, but I'm getting it tomorrow, won't be able to tell ya if it has an update on it since I got 2.0 already.
It's funny to see people so bored with their PSP that they are needing a firmware upgrade to use the thing again.
The firmware isn't out as I write this, but the North American PSP site just came live.
I got to it through the link preinstalled in my bookmarks menu when I installed the Japanese 2.0 firmware. But the URL is www.ps-portable.net.
Until now the North American link was inactive.
I posted initial impressions on my site at www.mobilitee.org
I updated to the japanese 2.0 when it came out. I like the browser because I don't have a laptop and sometimes I want to be prone while being online. never really had any intersest in playing old snes games... to each their own really. bring on the new games!
