Ladies and gentlemen, the behemoth: Samsung's M70 19-inch laptop
12, 13, 14, 15, 17-inches, nothing's good enough to satisfy you. Well, fine.
We promised there would be a
19-inch laptop, and here you freaking go. In fact, the
Samsung M70 is so damned huge they had to take that 1680 x 1050 19-inch LCD and make it fully detachable with a DVI
port. But it's not like you're going to get one here any time soon because of that American non-compete with Dell, so
not only do you have to save up for the machine, but also for the trip to Korea to fetch one. And for the inevitable
visits to the chiropractor.
[Thanks, Jens]

Sure, 19 inches, but the resolution sucks. It's not the size that matters...
clicclic @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
How Wow! This will look good in my '81 Camaro!
Gleb Serbin @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
vaio has had 19's for a while now, havent they? what makes this one so damned special? to be honest i trust sony product quality better.
the fact that it is detachable might make me even buy one so i can have 2 19 inch screens instead of a 19 and a 17. i think that based on the price this might be a viable solution for many people who dont wanna spend money on a laptop and a new monitor, but how many of those people are out there right now?
chet @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
That is so stupid. I can't even picture lugging one of those 17inch behemoths around....anywhere. Even my 15 inch won't fit on an airplane tray table. Talk about a product ready to fail. Almost as useless as those iPod killers.
I want a monitor and a portable. Note the portable. I plan on getting a 12 inch powerbook and then a 17inch lcd.
Marcos @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
When are they coming out with 19" tablet pc's with the detachable monitor that's wireless to the base laptop platform.
JBob250 @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
Hey hey, I don't like Sony either. And I dispise their Playstation department and what they've turned gaming into. I blame them almost as much as Jack Thompson. And their computers aren't bad as far as laptops go, they're functional enough.
But come on, flaming the guy for saying iPod killers can't compare? It's 100% true, nothing touches the iPod, not by a long shot. It's THE thing to have and has been for quite some time now. And they outsell everything.
And chet, I definitely agree with you. I'd take a 14-15 inch any day, but being a student and rarely keeping my laptop on my desk, I prefer the little 12's for portability. Isn't that what a laptop IS?
I say you want a big screen, just get a desktop, you'll probably get better resolution too.
Imp @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
There IS a market for a portable desktop. Just because a laptop is big and heavy does not mean it won't sell. Likewise, just because a laptop is teeny tiny does not mean it is guaranteed to sell.
jazzay @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
This is an article about a bohemoth laptop, why is everything starting into an iPod war? ulgh
i for one would buy one of these of the price was anywhere near reasonable (<4000), photoshop CD and Acid PRO on a 19" screen anywhere i want sounds good to me
a 17" really isnt all that big, especially when its widecreen, and the resolution doesnt "suck", 1600x1200 on a 15.4" Toshiba laptop was almost too high, so 1680x1020 on a 19" might be a sweetspot? well i dunno, but i could fit whatever i wanted on the 1600x1200, so having a high resolution on a bigger screen would be great, i cant stand using my old VAIO Picturebook with a 10" screen for anything else than Instant messegaging and checking me email, everything else involved way too much scrolling, bigger is good, its less eyestrain, the resolution is fine, at least it has a numpad, unlike nearly every 17" out there, im fine with carrying a 17" laptop around, a 19" wouldnt be that much worse, 17+" laptop are more for having a desktop you can easily carry somewhere else to use, not to use on the go, so stop complaining, id love to have one of these at the local coffee shop
Steve @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
ha! I ditched my pokey-slow HP 17inch behemoth because I literally couldnt ride my bike with it on my back. Traded her in for a sweet 2lb ibmx40. If I want a large screen, i'll sit down at my 20.1 LCD at my desktop machine. 19!? Its hard enough finding laptop cases for 17.
corey @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
The 19' widescreen display performs well, as do the graphics.
James @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
#3/ you live in japan?
this is for people who wanna use a 19" laptop
not for people who don't want
so stop bitching

I just think it's funny that the comments here get so off base. If you all are worried about the mass portability of the 19" beast, then I'd just go with a mac. I've had to lug equivalent mac and windows laptops around, all the way up to the 17" powerbook G4, and nothing beats the mac for portability. And the resolution on the screen is EXCELLENT.
Oh, and mister anti iPod, you might want to do some research on battery quality, hard drive and software dependability, and consumer reporting. The iPod came from a much less popular company, Apple, to become by far the most used mp3 media storage device on the market. I don't think people decided they'd just support the underdog one day.

"I have to agree that the general public is composed of mostly idiots. I read about a study conducted by a highschool kid trying to get people to ban dihydrogen monoxide. 43 out of 50 people said ban it without even wanting to know the other side of the story. So i conducted the same survey in my town. Out of 81 people polled, 61 said ban it, 15 were undecided, and only 5 knew it was water."
I don't know how I missed that post... that's effing hilarious :D!
Thanks for the support, BTW. Rio's death has seemed to bring out my argumentative side, especially after seeing pictures of the Chroma.

I already have enough trouble lugging my hp nx7010 with a wide 15" screen around, this one I'd have to get a trolley for... No thanks..
xVariable @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
Crrrrrraptastic! All the worst features of laptops - large volume, weight, and desktops - proprietary, completely non-upgradeable/swappable components, all in one. I want one RIGHT NOW!
Oh, and a low-res lCD too. You just can't get any better than that, folks. WE'RE ON THE BLEEDING EDGE, HERE! (Someone pass me a tissue. My nose is bloody, we're so out there.)

I love my 17" widescreen.. I used to have a 10" tiny laptop... and guess what? I keep my 17" in the exact same carryy bag. That means its every bit as portable. This laptop is maybe 3 pounds heavier then my old one, but realisticly thats nothing. I don't see why people care about laptop weight... it sits on your lap, or you carry it at your side. Its not like you are doing dumbell flys with them constantly. And all this from me, who is 5'10 and weighs 130lbs. Heck, i was a college student. I used to carry around 30+ lbs in my bag with all my books and crap. A laptop couldn't weigh too much for me.

Please keep your comments on-topic! This is a post about Samsung's new laptop, not the iPod.

This is a laptop post. A 19" one at that. Call me crazy, but lets discuss the size of the laptop issue. Read my post, I say its just as portable as a smaller laptop. Thoughts?
zainali @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
hope dell picks this up with some kind of modified version of 7800gtx (7800 go maybe) and intels yonah processors.

redoc: If it's a relative comparison of you/smaller laptop and Anre The Giant/Samsungs M70 then, yeah, sure. ;-)
If yor laptop bag is a camping-sized backack, than the Samsungs M70 is for you! :-P

[Personal opinion view] It may be "every bit as portable" for some people, like yourself; but for others it is not. You simply can't fit anything bigger than a 15inch notebook in my bag, and personaly anything over 14.1 is just to big for my liking.
[Common sence view] If it were "every bit as portable" then it would have to fit in all the same places. You simply can't fit a 19inch in a 10inch laptop case; and your going to have one hell of a time fitting a 19inch laptop on an airplane food tray; the 10inch would fit fine.

For people that are moving from year to year (sometimes month to month), shipping a huge desktop is not really practical. I'm in a different country every 6 months and I want my computer to be with me rather than just collecting dust at home. A 17/19" laptop is the perfect fit.
Also, for most Asian homes, there simply is no space for a desktop. You got enough for a monitor + keyboard but nowhere for the case itself. A laptop again is the best choice, where everything is integrated.
And lastly, laptops are wildly popular in Asia because there's literally no wires to hookup other than the power. Most people turn white at the mention of PS/2, USB, VGA, DVI. Pressing a power button and being able to enjoy the computer immediately is a good thing (tm).
hobgoblin @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
hmm, i like this :)
what i realy like to know tho is where they hid the electronics. if its in the keyboard then why are not more people shipping this kind of setup as its the comeback of the microcomputer (of atari and comodore fame).
basicly the whole computer in the area of a large keyboard :D
and having the screen be detachable enables me to put it on a table and have a lesser weight in my lap :P
i hope to see more designs like this!
nym9 @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
This is interesting in that the screen is detachable, so you would be able to get two screens, for two locations, and just transport the bottom-part (keyboard/hard drive).
Anything liket that available here in the US?
Claudiu @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
Samsung M70is not the only 19 inch laptop that will be presented at IFA.

Having a Dell 9300 (17 inch) laptop myself, I have to agree, that any laptop larger than 15inches is not portable. The laptop, for its size, is not heavy, just heavier. Again, that is by itself. 3 more pounds doesn't make a difference to someone who's just lifting the laptop, but chances are, that it's 3 pounds added to the complete weight of your bag.
I had to buy a bag that would fit my 17 inch laptop and would also provide some minimal amount of protection. So the bag is friging huge. Don't get me wrong, I love my laptop, but it's not the ideal size/weight for portability. It's not like I can reach into my bag, in the metro, and pull it out and just use it. It's too big for that kind of activity.
Desktop Replacement yes, but not very portable.
Scott Perkins @ Dec 19th 2005 1:05AM
I need it for RV/Camper travel. In this
case it should be far better than a desktop
and should also have a 12 volt power (cigarette
lighter? ) capability. Watching TV is a major
objective as is use of a GPS integrated with
map database etc. and also WIFI internet
or cell phone data connection. If there are
any better suggestions, I'd like to hear them.
thanks

I just stopped by a local PC store in Busan, S.Korea and they didn't have one to show...they have it somewhere but it's gonna cost around $4,000 US dollars.
