Each slat is endowed with a sensor that determines how much it needs to open in order to allow you to enter or exit. Why, other than the sheer Star Trek factor? The practical bit is it keeps hot or cold air escape to a minimum (saving on heating and air conditioning costs), plus keeps nasties like pollen and such in the great outdoors where they belong.
