Dell's Axim X51v?
If these photos are indeed real, the Dell Axim
X51v isn't going to be all that different from the X50v apart from Windows Mobile 5.0 and a couple of new
Dell-installed applications. We've got nothing on that supposed VGA res screen though, which is too bad, after playing
with the HTC Universal we don't see how
it's going to be easy to go back to anything but.
[Thanks, kerunt]

The Axim x51v will definitely have a VGA screen; that's what the v is there for. The Axim x51 (notice the missing v) will be (mostly) the same as the x51v but with a QVGA screen.
Maybe I haven't been following Engadget's coverage of the X51v closely enough, but what do you mean about the "supposed VGA res screen"? Why wouldn't it have a VGA screen? The X50v has one. I appologize, but I would understand more if the link on those words worked.
I'm curious, though. What would we expect from a model with such a slight name change? It's like they're moving from 5.0 to 5.1. The thing I'm really curious about is that I could have sworn that Dell or MS was going to offer a free or cheap WM5 upgrade to X50 owners. If that's the case, then why launch a new device? It seems like it would be an expensive move just to avoid confusion among new buyers as to which OS comes installed on the phones. But could that be it?
Oh, and the second you said "a couple of new Dell-installed applications," a shiver went down my spine. Never have I seen a Dell, with the default Windows OS that it came with, that wasn't buggy as hell. And I've seen a lot. I like Dell, but will stick to the products that don't have GUI interfaces, like monitors and printers.
speaking of which, any chance we'll get that HTC Universal review you promised a week ago before its released?
Um, the X50v had a VGA screen, why would you think the X51v would have anything otherwise?
Looky here: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=96483
Looks like it will have Powerpoint Mobile!
Ya come on guys we need that review of HTC U. I dont know why but I just cant stop thinking about that device. I just love those first pics we saw a few days back. Would love to find out more about it. Hey if you need any help reviewing it send me one of those shweeeet babies and I would love to write a review as long as you would ask for.
;)
So now comes the question... Wait for the new one to come out, or buy a new x50v direct from Dell for $278?
(Do a search on Ebay for item # 5611824734)
Great. Another fugly Dell. :-
We're working on that Universal review--it's a monster of a machine, and we want to make sure we do it the justice it deserves. I can tell you this after spending an afternoon with it... it's unlike anything I've ever used before. It totally blew away my perceptions of what a mobile device could be.
You guys are missing out from not reading that AximSite thread ;)
This unit has 256MB built in storage, and since it is using WM 5, all vital information is stored IN BIN, thus there is no need for a backup battery. This unit also (apparently) features built in GPS. The person with this unit also claims that after an hour of usage the battery dropped only 5% from 100%, dell may have updated the battery (lets hope!).
The unit does NOT have built-in GPS, it's just the standard WM5 applet for providing GPS data to multiple apps from a single receiver. Yes, of course it has Powerpoint Mobile, that again is standard WM5 hardware. And that 5% in one hour figure was achieved using the *extended* 2200 mAh battery. Just an FYI.
Its a fake. The "1" is clearer than the rest of the letters.
Ant, read the provided resources before making an accusation like that! Have you even bothered to look at the other photos? I doubt it.
I just spoke to a sales rep at dell. He anticipates the x51v to be released some time in November, but he could not "find" a specific date. I asked for any specs he could provide, but he said he's waiting for those as well. He did note that the unit will likely have some sort of cell phone compatibility, likely via a card interface (I'm guessing a CF cell card). No information on memory, battery, etc.
Nothing extravagent here, but at least they're acknowledging it'll be here soon

Any PocketPC with a CF slot can use a Compactflash phone card, but that doesn't make the X51v a cell phone.
Dell has posted official information on their website!!

note:
64mb SDRAM
128mb Flash

The only difference between the X50 ane X51 is that they ship with Windows Mobile 2005 and have twice the ram
