NEC's HR-1100A white-label HD-DVD
Early adopters, start your engines. NEC certainly didn't drag their feet in releasing a counter to
Pioneer's BRD-101A, the first consumer PC next-gen
optical drive we saw earlier this week. But NEC's new HR-1100A is a 2x HD-DVD drive (remember, HD-DVD / Blu-ray are
very high bitrate, and 2x here is not equivalent to 2x DVD, just as it is not equivalent to 2x CD) dual-layer
drive that can read dual-sided discs that can theoretically fit 64GB. Don't forget the real bonus here though—this
drive has a blue laser pickup (oh, the irony) that reads DVDs and CDs, unlike the Pioneer which only has a dual laser
system capable of reading Blu-ray and DVD discs. It's kind of funny watching these companies pick their side; let the
format wars begin, uh, again!

is that a window in the top of the drive? sweet.
Sick!! How much are those discs?
And how much is 2x in HD-DVD? in bitrate
Ah, the first real next-gen DVD format burner. I've never seen or touched a disc and I'm already taking sides :)... I'm not sure whether HD-DVD will be a VHS/Beta war or whether it'll be like a DVD-R/DVD+R war where both sides coexist fine... I like HD-DVD the best, but I presume both will find their market and that in a while devices will support both formats...
I think that's doubtful that this will play out the same way as DVD-R and DVD+R. At least those two competitors had exactly the same underlying base format... DVD-ROM. The recording part they couldn't agree on of course, but the bottom line was that both discs could play just like a pressed DVD-ROM.
Not this way here... we're talking mutual exclusivity here... This will be interesting.
This is NOT, I repeat NOT a HD-DVD burner! The drive can only READ HD-DVDs. It doesn't even burn DVD±RW or CD±RW, it just reads them as well. NEC's original press release (in german) only mention the theoretical capacity of HD-DVD disks, that's probably where the mistranslation occured. (Yes, I'm german)
uwe is correct..check all the other articles out there
who cares if its a burner or not. By the time any sort of blank HD-DVD media becomes available for under $10 a disc... this drive will be obsolite and the 16x quad layer burner drives will be out.
Sorta like how every idiot bought a 16x DVD writier for mega bucks when brand new and by the time 16x media became available (and 16x is still not cheap enough) the drive went for 1/10 of the price. Same with people buying all the 4x dual layer Drives now. DVD9s are still $5 a disc and by the time the come down to a reasonable $1 a disc, the 16x dual layer burners will be out for $50.
Much like VHS vs. Betamax it will be the porno industry that decides HD-DVD vs Blu-ray.
At some point, the consumers are going to demand a universal player or universal standard to the next gen disc players/burners.
Wait wait. Before we even go "next-gen", which format won? DVD+R/RW or DVD-R/RW?
The DVD- versus DVD+ wasn't a huge deal since we were only talking a format for recording data and making sure bought the correct burnable dvd format for the drive you own.
The HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray battle is more about how you buy and play HD content and how quickly one format or the other is adopted so content becomes available.
I sure do love a good format war!!!
But NEC’s new HR-1100A is a 2x HD-DVD dual-layer drive (ramble) that can theoretically burn 64GB on a dual-layer disc. Am I stoned or does that make a little more sense?
When will HD-DVD be in Russia and other east countries? How much will it cost? Will it be stable?
The article says, "dual-layer drive that can _read_ dual-sided discs that can theoretically fit 64GB". I see no mention of burning in there.
"let the format wars begin"
how about lets not let the wars begin by not buying this crap and waiting for Holographic disks.
Who wins in this format war? Computer geeks. Why? We all would love a +50gb burner as soon as possible. And with two sides competing, we are sure to VERY quickly see these drives in the market. Then we will very soon see both sides competing in capacity and speed.
NEC releases 10gb discs at 2x for HDDVD. Sony counters with 15gb discs at 3x for BlueRay. NEC counters with 30gb discs at 10x for HDDVD. Etc Etc.
So in the end, the real winner is us. :)
Just like Ray said..
We can skip this whole war stuff and move right along to the holographic media. HD-DVD/Blu-Ray are hardly next generation media. They are just gap fillers for what will truely be next-gen media 300+GB Per disc. HD-DVD Is more suitable as the preferable gap-filler due to its ease of implementation and lower immediate and longterm costs/compatiblity.
Now start giving more exposure and support behind the true next-gen media (They are here now, just needs more exposure). Just google for "Optware" , "InPhase" , "holographic versatile disc" , "VMD Disc" ..
