Philips to show Readius rollable display prototype
Philips will, er, roll out another prototype rollable display based on its PV-QML5. The new version, the Readius mobile e-reader, will be unveiled by Philips subsidiary PolymerVision, at the Internationale Funkausstellung consumer electronics show in Berlin later this week. The Readius prototype will have the same (100µm, QVGA, active-matrix 5-inch display as the PV-QML5, and will roll up into a 7.5 mm tube when not in use.

Fine. Will someone PLEASE start selling these rollable displays instead of showing like the 1,000th prototypes!? At least sony commercialized e-paper technology (and managed to kill it by DRMing it up to hell).
Eric @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
Too bad it's not in colour.
Duodenum @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM

paintist @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
Yes, Sony and Fuji are blue balling the world with this e-paper technology that won't be commercialized for another year.
mtheorist @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM

that looks fake. A QVGA display with fonts that small would be unreadable.

Azizi @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
I want my Global now! The designer must have been a fan of Earth: Final Conflict.
ss4vegito7 @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
I think all in one devices will use this, Like a cell phone that looks small and has a normal cell phone sized display but.... when u open it up its big enough to watch movies on!
Of course this won't be for another 10 years when they are in color and are cheap enough.
CAN'T WAIT!!

Has anyone heard of any clothing or wearable applications for this technology? I ride a motorcycle and would love to see a GPS/traffic display on my forearm. I can see some fashion uses for this as well.
Nick @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
wow that would be awesome...but now if it could play some tunes...
Steve @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
Man that's sweet, looks like those pda type devices off of Earth Final Conflict.. MAN I love those.

Morten Skogly @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
There is something very star trek about this device, me likes. Should be black though, and more puple and yellow on the display. Come on, fix please, them beam one to me, Scotty.
dsteele_7 @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
I was sooo tottaly think OMG Earth Final Conflict! when I say this... give it some colur in several years and I'm so there. lol
Been looking forward to rollable/foldable displays for years... seems like they're taking forever. Oh well I can be patient...
JR @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
Anyone think that this may be used for an iPod video? Watching a movie on a 3 inch screen would suck, but put that in an ipod, and that would be better. Apple's making an announcement next week, so it could be then, or in hte future...
Quantum Faze @ Dec 19th 2005 1:36AM
Yes, I can't wait for that flexible display to be sold either, so I wont finally be so bore at the airport...chillback watching all my Matrix movies. Can't wait for that HD Color...shit thou!!! So bring it on Sony, Fuji, Philips or whomever!!!
