The Motorola Q coming to the V?
Not that we're surprised when Moto spreads their GSM-centric wings a little and introduces their hot phones second-string on CDMA networks, but word has it that hot off the heels of getting the CDMA RAZR this holiday season, Verizon could also be getting a compatible version of the Q qwerty Smartphone. Another nicety is the Verizon version of the device is supposed to support EV-DO, which we wouldn't find at all surprising given the EV-DO on the RAZR as well.

So does this mean it wont hit Cingular?
I am very specifically waiting for this phone, but I have Cingular so I'm going to be pissed if they dont drop it on Cingular.
anyone even know when its supposed to be out even?
oooo I hope Verizon gets the Q.
I am a verizon customer and refuse to switch providers, but I really do want to check out the Q when it is released.
I used to think Motorola had the best phones about a decade ago. Since then I've seen some really poorly made crap come from them but I'm all for more PPC phones to get the competition going.
I have the 6600 now which has its share of issues but I wouldn't buy a new PPC phone until it has the following -
AT LEAST bluetooth 1.2 - 2.0 would be a plus - 1.1 sucks don't get any phone with 1.1. If the manufacturer doesn't specify the version, it is probably 1.1 because if it were a newer version they would make sure you knew.
A VGA screen - the new HTC that has the clamshell design, WM5 and a VGA screen has some major issues - size and a clamshell with no external screen!!!
A standard USB port would be nice so you could use your device like a flash drive without having to bring a cable with you.
If you are stuck getting a model with a useless camera the LED flash should be able to be used as a flashlight like the Sanyo 8200
The Q should be nice if it ever ships...
The only question is how will Verizon slap on a fugly looking UI skin onto Windows Mobile 5.0...
So is this the only good phone at verizon...i'm thinking about switching to them, but hate their phones
Nah it wont get an ugly UI skin, this is Windows Mobile, they don't screw with that. I don't think they can. And they BETTER NOT TRY.
Will the Q series better or worse then smartphones? Then PDA? And what about cost?
After using a pair of Motorola A845's for a year on the UMTS provided by AT&T (and recently getting my letter telling me "Hey, no more UMTS until November but we'll give you a $100 service credit, SUCKER!!) and absolutely hating the phone's software crashes. EV DO came to my neighbor hood via Verizon.
I tried desperately to stay away from Motorola but alas in the end the only phone with EVDO and the reception was the e815 (by the way, Verizon really will go three rounds with you to get you a phone that works.)
Alas I can now say that Motorola has the reverse Midas touch on 3G technology. The e815 crashes about as often as the A845. I wonder if instead of greed, perhaps Verizon ships the e815 with DUN disabled to avoid all the service calls???
When it works it's got twice the bandwidth of the A845 so I haven't taken it back.
But I wonder how stable the Q will be. I wonder because the e815 crashes when doing V.Cast, not just DUN. And the phone flips spastically back and forth between 1xRTT and 1xEVDO. I really don't think Motorola knows how to write a stable 3G stack yet: UMTS or EV DO.
Rumor has it Cingular is going with a Samsung for HSPDA which they are rolling to replace their pilot UMTS program they inherited from AT&T. Maybe Samsung can write a working 3.5G stack...
Until then I humbly remain,
Motorola 3G Victim
I'm a Cingular man also, I hope it hits Cingular
I'm with t-mobile and I've used the PalmOne Treo 600 for a bit over a year and I must say this phone looks almost exactly like mine.
Motorola has made crap phones the past few years, from the 20 phones I've probably burnt through, I would say Samsung has made the most stable phone (both with operations and physical attributes), has had the most funtional options, and the prices have never been that bad..
Although they announced the Q wouldn't be available until Q1-06, there were rumors they were trying to get it pushed out for Xmas.
I found this link to pre-order an "UNLOCKED" Moto Q, but the cost is $999. Keep in mind this is for an unlocked phone, which is normally more expensive. Haven't heard what the expected retail will be, but remember the Razr started at $499 and can now be had for a mere 99 bucks.
