Jobs cancels Apple Expo Paris keynote
Alright Apple conspiracy theorists, now you've got something to chew on: Steve Jobs just cancelled his big keynote for this year's Apple Expo in Paris. No official (or unofficial) word on what happened or why Stevie J. won't be doing his "Just one more thing" thing for us in France, but could it be that they're just going to make all their big announcements at the press event they have scheduled for this coming Wednesday? Or are they just not ready to announce all those new iPods they're working on? Not sure, but we do know that instead of a formal keynote Apple will be holding a more informal press conference with Jobs and other company execs.

oh man...so no new toys for now?!
Slim Thug @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
My guess is that the big announcement will come at the media event this week. I mean, this product is supposed to be as revolutionary as the iPod, so what else could it be other than the iPod video? Wouldn't be surprised if iTunes 5 (finally) comes out with video capabilities.
apt @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
Slim Thug - Lets hope you are right, by the way the current shipping version of iTunes has video capabilities.

Please don't get on at me if this is a stupid question, but IF there is a video iPod in the wings, where is all the content? Does Apple have links with film distributors, or how is it going to be possible for me to fill up a player with video...?

iTunes 4.9 already has video capabilities and so does the iTunes Music Store. what we need now is for the iPod to catch up!
Hopefully this can be done with a simple firmware update. Yeah I know you are all going to say "who wants to watch movies on that tiny iPod screen" but that's not why I want it. I want to be able to store movies on my iPod, and plug it in to a TV for watching on a larger screen. This would be brilliant for presentations etc.
nolan @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
Most of the whisperings about this have come from movie company Execs. Whether or not it is hapening at the press event, a video ipod is in the works in some form.
The press event is probably more likely to unveil an iTunes phone, as the similar event on at the same night by motorolla suggests. I definately think that the phone will come... Will apple anounce something else? perhaps... Its not as likely as people are making it out to be.
bhaalspawn @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
It's not going to be feeature films it will eb music videos. This solves the battery, storage and content issues as well as generating additional revenue from the ITMS. In addition it gives Apple a unique selling point as there is no real other way to get music video content. It also acts as a test for the appetite for video content, if people want it and feel comfortable watching video on the move then Apple can start going after feature film and TV content.
cyrus89 @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
it would be really nice to be a firmware update but i dont see that happpening apple just wants the money
yinyang @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
there goes my dual core powerbook...sniff, sniff
Julian @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
I just hope he didn't cancel it because of his illness. He almost missed Paris last year because of that.
Galley @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
iTunes 5 still won't be able to hold a candle to J. River Media Center 11.

The only thing is ... most music video are stupid or stale these days. The only videos I'd want to see is "Aha - Take On Me" or Peter Gabriel Videos.
Most videos these days are just rappers shouting in front of the car of the month that has been tricked out with some oversized gold rims!
homer @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
I just discovered I can see thousand of videos with winamp for FREE. Coollllll
and news from cnn, abc, trailer and more.
ah yes of course it's for PC.
PS: I've a G5 too but damn, there's nothing free except the useless podcast stations, bleahh
wol @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
so...no new powerbook update then?
......
No. Im a private kinda guy. @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
Why the hell couldnt Apple wait 16 days until the Apple Expo to do the big announcements. I mean what is so urgent that it cannot wait until September 19th.
Maybe Jobs will announce on 9/7 that he will quit, and then Bill Gates will do the Expo in Paris, and merge the two OS'.
No? Am i been crazy. Something is happening between the 7th and 19th and Apple need to get a product out before then. 48hrs to go...
sebastien @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
This is a shame.
I'm going to believe that Jones don't care about europe. I mean , that's the second time that he cancel it.
Hiding is not a good way to awnser to those mac os x x86 cares.
I was suppose to go to this keynote, and be sure that his apple expo is gonna be a flop because of that.
shame on u,... They are suppose to fight for their futur and they hides themself.
What next, stop the x86 projet going back to ppc, or maybe stop computer and becoming a mp3 player's manufacturer.
Fran @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
it makes sense slowly but surely to thin that apple will move into video.
they made a big thing about QT7 and h.264.
a very good quality film can be squeezed into 700mb.
700mb (plus!) downloads nowadays are pretty regular for some people (you know who you are!) - so i don't think that iTunes video is that far fetched an idea,
just what to play them on...?
No. Im a private kinda guy. @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
EDIT:
September 20th
And 13 days between the 7th and then
You see how angry i am. My logical is ruined!
sebastien @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
maybe jobes is not anymore an Icon but a coward
Tom @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
He obviously has diarrhea.
sebastien @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
the wors is that he will be present for a small keynote but only for some developpers and press journalists
Daniel @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
Sebastien,
Why are you bitching about this if you don't even know Steve JOBS' name? Not "Jones" or "Jobes".
Everyone else:
You are reading into this way too much. What will happen will happen. No point crying about it.
Also, just because the Expo will not feature a Steve Jobs keynote, does not mean that the "company is dead". Puh-lease! Any time Apple fanatics realize that the rumors they make up are complete bull*, they think the company's gone. Well, hmmm, rumors like that have been going around for about 15 years now, and, oh look! Apple's alive and well.
Glen C. @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
Steve Jobs was quoted in a interview saying that he thought the concept of video is pretty stupid because of bulk.
Dustin @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
American media won't be going to Paris to catch the next big announcement. This thing will most likely be huge...
I smell a video iPod & iTunes 5 (with a better way to show videos, the current way is stupid).

"Why are you bitching about this if you don't even know Steve JOBS' name? Not "Jones" or "Jobes"."
Maybe he's making fun of his name? In a weird way...
tf @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
There was no cancellation. The expectation that he'd be there was started as a rumor by a rumor site (Appleinsider) and then everyone ran with it. He was never on the schedule. Sorry, folks, but your theories are misguided.
And people complaining about his absence last year... Are you nuts? The guy was getting chemo!! And the year before that Schiller did the keynote. For three years, there has been no expectation that Jobs would be there... (Also for those rpedicting doom and death), these last three years have been the best in Apple's nearly 30 year history.
Phil M @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
Well said tf.
Jeff @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
Ok, I get the updated iPod mini's and shuffles (and phone) are being announced Wed., but what about the new PowerBooks? I was really looking forward to an updated 12" or hopefully a new 13" this month (as the rumors suggested). Unless they announce them Wed., with no keynote in Paris, it doesn't look good for September. Apple: The PowerBooks need updating ASAP! I'm in the market for a new notebook, and the PowerBooks are technologically way behind comparable PC's. I need something light and portable, and the Sony S series is looking mighty nice compared to the 12" PowerBook (better specs, gorgeous screen, lighter, 13")! Come on Apple, update those PowerBooks!
Oh, as long as I'm dreaming, I could dream about a Apple designed cell phone, video iPod, video download service, and iTunes music subscription services too, can't I!
paul @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
too bad the rumors aren't true, but it's ok. If they were going to announce something, they'll do it anyway.
as long as the video iPod goes, I don't really see it coming right away... it would be nice, but apple really waits to the last second to update their stuff, and if the old thingy is selling so well... maybe in time for x-mas.
I agree, the PBook needs some major work. But I guess it's coming intel inside, early 2006. The effort would be too much, to make a new G4PB and right away change it for a Mactel... waste of money, think commercially.
Maybe bigger definitions or conservative upgrades? that seems possible, but i don't expect them for now.
cheers!
arsemonger @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
What we need to hear is about the new video ipod along with new itunes for my ilifestyle which i can then stick up my iass. Only then will i be complete.
pol @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
whoa, lots of angry people here, huh? very constructive talk, i see. i never thought there would be so many bloggers reading stuff they don't care about and insulting everyone who does, shit, that seems to be a real waste of life.
have you ever heard a song by McCartney called "live and let die"? i mean, mac-fans probably need a better hobby, but anti-apple freaks, start looking arroud for a life...

tf, then how exactly did people register for the Keynote if it didn't exist?
I've got my visitor pass with a big red word saying "KEYNOTE" underneath it. The weird thing is that they only sent out these cards about 4 days ago. So this is a very last minute cancellation.
tf @ Dec 19th 2005 12:19AM
Conrad, does it say Keynote by Steve Jobs? No, it doesn't. Also, for the last three years the keynote announcement (whether or not there was one, who it was) has been made between 6-3 weeks before the event.
The fact is: Jobs or Apple never said he'd be there, and he will be there for a media/analyst Q&A.
