Take to the water in the Hydra Spyder amphibious car
If you're looking to get your James Bond on (and didn't already spring for the Aquada), you may want to check out the Hydra Spyder from the modestly named Cool Amphibious Manufacturers International. The $155,000 custom car is powered by a Corvette motor and can function as well in the water as on land. The Spyder can seat four, pull a water skier, and takes six months to build. Want something that'll handle a bigger group? CAM also produces amphibious buses and RVs, with prices starting at a mere $850,000. This is definitely not your father's Winnebago.

Seems kind of appropriate that it uses a Corvette engine, being amphibious and all.
Bravomedic @ Dec 19th 2005 1:37AM
Now if only I had $155,000...

That's totally hot. Ski behind a convertible. Sign me up.

I live 9 miles away from work -- but there's a river in the way, so I have to drive nearly 30. If they had something like this for around $25k-$30k, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

What the hell does this have to do with gadgets? It seems like Engadget has been spreading more and more out of the realm of gadgets and into the world of "anything somewhat interesting."

What ever happened to the flying sub? There was a TV show about it, but the product never really caught on, I guess.

Looks good in the water...but very ugly out of the water.....I'd prefer the Aquada over this, at least it isn't an eye soar outta water.
Justin France @ Dec 19th 2005 1:37AM
David Oh: You're so right, i totally just turned the tap on and was, like - oh, no - water! I'm being totally disrespectful to the victims of Katrina.

SIX MONTHS TO BUILD???? It must come with the most confusing assembly manual if it takes that long to get it togerth - and if you loose 1 piece..... plop - sinks like a stone. Well at least, unlike a jigsaw, everyone would be impressed with your effort.

Think I still prefer the Gibbs Aquada - good old British craftsmanship!

That is SO true!
I live in Oklahoma City and after the big tornado of May 3, 1999, I boycotted the sale of ceiling fans.
This looks like a floating mustang convertible with a horrible front clip conversion. And its front wheel drive!!
This company's website claims over 500 hp when the 6.0l LS2 only puts out 404 hp. Sure 500 HP is possible through mods, but nothing I've found so far states any sort of engine mods to bump up the horsies.

$50,000 for a real Corvette
$50,000 for a nice Mastercraft speed boat
________
$100,000 = Ive got an extra $55K in my pocket by not buying this.
Brandon @ Dec 19th 2005 1:37AM

You can take the other $55k and buy another corvette for the other side of the river...
