Nintendo Revolution controller -- more deets, pics
Here's some more Nintendo Revolution controller pr0n for ya, plus a few more details on how the thing actually works: its main features are going to include 3D pointing, via sensors that pick up the directionality of the controller — similarly, it will also be tilt sensitive. Included buttons are the familiar D-Pad, face buttons, and a trigger on the backside of the unit. As noted before, the controller will tap into multifunctionality via separate attachments which plug into an expansion port at its base; the analog stick controller pictured here will also have two trigger buttons. Rumble is of course built-in, and the unit and its attachments are completely wireless. This prompts some concern over how the controller is going to stack up in FPS-type games due to the inherently slower response time of a wireless versus a wired controller. Pics of the controller all decked out in colored suits after the jump, which reminds us to remark on the fact that everything is otherwise reallllly white.

I saw on the TV a lil' while ago that Sony had lost something like £320mil ($500mil odd) on the Tv's and PSPs they're making Then it also included in the special sony time that Nintendo sales are making the millions so HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! To all u stupid pathetic loser wannabe's who are afraid to be playing the most technologically advanced system that doesn't rip off other ppls ideas (such as psp having internet(coming soon with java enabling software) and mp4 style things with dvd player)
Get real! PS is going rubbish cause it's not doing any more new things! i complete their games in 1day! (except grand theft auto's) plus they make them so easy by enabling cheats! Sure, nintendo does have cheats for some but only with "Gameshark" or "xploder" cheat things not a type in screen thing!
Revolution gets 10/10! It will rule da world! (Or at least this generation until Nintendo
(The website address is to my Forum that i will soon be working on more).

nintendo rulz i love there new controller its so cool emagine playing Zelda with that baby

aparently the first was a diversion
JamesP-
"This is meerly a "party" console for when your friends come round and therefore it wont appeal to everyone in the market, once the novelty has worn off how often will you fancy playing games that involve waving your arms about?"
this is definitely not a party console or a gimmick or a kiddy system. its one step closer to virtual reality and introduces basically an invisible analog stick in the air that has buttons attached to it. imagine if u showed someone a NES gamepad 50 years ago? they'd say, "who would use that when they're on their own, thats just sad, theyd look like retards".
"Third party developers may not develop for it"
third party developers WILL develop for it. several have already signed up. and if they cant b stuffed figuring out how to work with the new controller then they're losers and i dont wanna play their games anyway. but in that case they can use the more normal controller 'shell' that nintendo has promised.
"Xbox will take a bigger share of the market this time"
how do u figure? i dont have any facts or figures and i dont really care, but everywhere i go there's much more hype for ps3 than xbox360. if it weren't for xbox being backed by microsoft then itd already b gone. i heard they lost 4 million/billion dollars or something?
"I doubt whether the controller would be responsive/ subtle enougth to truly make it worthwhile"
the ppl who have actually played on this have said that it was sensitive enough for u simply to just move ur wrist to do all the work. obviously they're gonna exagerate it in the trailer. it would b like a trailer showing someone sitting there pushing buttons. it wouldnt b very exciting.
I am so disappointed! I feel like I've been betrayed by my god! Whoever designed this should be shot, or fired. I see now that the new revolution is that Nintendo has been taken over by morons. I don't want to have to jerk off with the new controller in order to play a game. Nintendo has lost one of its biggest fans.
Dayne,
Thanks for not replying to my message without resorting to the normal fanboyism shit we see on here!
In reply to your points,
1) in my opinion although some will embrace the new controller (particulary in Japan) the bulk of the consumers in the US & Europe are conservative sheep and i'm fairly confident that most will see this as simply a novelty machine and they'll prefer to stick with what they are used too. You can see this "conservative" factor by looking at the gane charts, same old tired games/genres filling up the top 10's, "how am I going to play my Maddens/Fifa/NBA game with that thing?!"
I'd go as far to say the Gamecube controller put many off the GC as well.
Of course if they bring out a standard controller than the whole excerise will have been a waste of time!
2) Some 3rd party developers will sign up for the rev as they did with the Gamecube but in my opinion the Gamecube was a failure (at least in the US and Europe where it was clearly number 3) because of a lack of 3rd party games. Infact the people who did develop games for the Gamecube meerly did because they had no competition! Get your game out between Nintendo franchise releases and you had a clear market!
Here in the UK when I go to a games store the PS2 and Xbox shelfs dwarf the Gamecube ones and that was with only M$ first dabble into the market.
3) Obviously I have no facts or figures as yet but percentage wise i'm sure the 360 will eat into Sony's share of the market. This time Xbox will have the cheaper machine and have first run on the market place, the key advantages Sony had last time. What did Sony do when the Xbox was released? Here in the Uk they dropped the price of the PS2 by £100 forcing MS to do the same only months after and looking pretty foolish, this time it will be MS playing that trick on Sony.
IMO there is likely to be at least 2-3 million 360's sold before the PS3 is even released and thats assuming Sony are right when they state a spring release date (which I doubt when you consider the lack of any signs of games/running hardware at recent shows). That means that MS will have a much larger starting point this time round, and some momentum already in place.
4) OK I wasn't aware that people outside of Nintendo had acsess to the new controller and have actually used it to play games so I bow to your greater knowledge.
The thought of using the analogue attachment to move around in Zelda round while waving the remote part round like a sword is an exciting one I have to admit!
Me? I've ordered a 360 because I have a network socket right where it will be going so i'll be able to stream my music, vids, photo's direct from my PC in my study onto my tv/dolby amp in the lounge controlling it with the xbox remote, all on HD, beautiful..
BTW I'll buy the revolution for My girlfriend because she loves Nintendo so I'll se plenty of that machine anyway and i'm going to forget Sony this generation because 2 machines in the house are enougth!
have a good one

(btw, the site doesnt seem to load up properly sometimes)
and also, clearly reputation and sales wise the gc came in last place. theres no denying that. but wat about profits? i know for a fact in the financial department gc beat xbox. not sure about sony, but i wouldnt b surprised. nintendo r very good at making money. does anyone know for sure?
Dis mite seem like a kool idea but really nintendo wot were u finkin? dont get me wrong im not saying dat ppl wont buy it.... but i cant see my self jus moving my arm around 4 a couple of hourz. metroid prime will smack every fing but wot about zelda... Brilliant article, thanks for that, Nintendo are genius for thinking up those games without even trying! Clearly it could be truly be a revloution with completley types of games being thought up... but only if enougth non gamer types give it a chance, time will tell.
I dont think comparing the company's balance sheets for indications of a likely winner is very relevant because Microsoft wins by a landslide, MS may have spent billions but for their investment, they overtook Nintendo as the 2nd largest console manufacturer and they now also own Rare, Bungie and other top developers.
In a war of attrition MS will win as they always do!
What the crap? I Googled "Nintendo Revolution Controller" to find if the rumors were true. Sadly, they are. A REMOTE CONTROL!? Think about this for a moment. you've got you 54" rear-projection TV, and a DVD player with a remote control. Take a look at your remote. Study it. Look at the strategic placement of the buttons. Now quick, excluding any hyphens and the area code, type in your phone number as fast as you can. Hmm? How long did it take? I'll tell you: in the amount of time it took you to type in 7 digits on your remote, Ganondorf would have wiped you out in Zelda.
The remote control is, bluntly and simply put, a dumb idea. In fact, so was the GameCube controller, but that's not what this blog is about. (Hurrah for the N64) I'm curious as to what was going through Nintendo's mind as they designed the next-gen system. Why not do what Microsoft and Sony both did: keep the controllers (relatively) the same. The XBox 360's controller is nearly unchanged from the original XBox. Sure they adopted the more comfortable S-Controller feel and style, but the basic design is still there. They moved the former Black and White buttons right above the triggers, Playstation style. Genius. Sony's controller, while small and a little clunky (I'm used to the XBox controller, so some bias is present) and the button labels, X, O, Square, and Triangle, are a little nonstandard, the integral design gets the job done. The layout is easy to get use to since it is practically symmetrical, and it's small enough that you can easily reach all of thebuttons in a flash, but not so small you need tweezers to play Crash Bandicoot.
The only thing I enjoy about the Revolution, and what I've heard and seen about them, are the available color schemes. Not enough to make me buy one (c'mon, man. HALO!!!) but I'd go to Nintendo's site just to get a look at one every once in a while. Yes, it's true: I have no life, taht I would do such boring acts on our Internet.
The paint schemes, as stated by other posts, are extremely reminiscent of Apple Macs. Wait. Wait, wait, wait. That's it. If PC is to Mac, then XBox 360 is to Revolution. This works perfectly because, like Macs, the Revolution is a ergonomic and technological nightmare. As with Apple, Nintendo feels they need to always be looking forward, always changing. News flash: change isn't always for the best. Next thing we know, the next system will be the iUniverse, or something along those lines.
I've had my rant for the day. Enjoy.

This controller will make the Revlolution fail. Nintendo does not stand a chance against the Xbox 360 or Ps3
The Nintendo Revolution controller is not a simple controller, is THE controller, this controller is perfect!!!! EVERYTHING GOOD!
ppl, this controller wont make revolution fail! nintendo confirmed they were going to release a more normal controller as an optional add-on. they confirmed this at the same time they released this controller! anyone with half a mind about gaming would know that.
if anything, prejudice will make the revolution fail. if it were the sony revolution i reckon about half of the naysayers would give it a chance.
and btw wat does everyone consider "failing"? sales wise, gamecube was just behind xbox and ps2 was way ahead. but nintendo made tons nd tons and tons more money from gc than ms did with xbox. nintendo is the best at managing money, so even if basically nobody buys this, they're still gonna b around to make yet another console.
this is going to be the best ever!all thanks to nintendo for having the guts to do something different.
this will definatley be sitting in my livingroom the day it's released
Every interface designer knows that reducing buttons doesn't make things more "natural." Good interfaces often have lots of non-modal buttons which reduces dimmentional complexity (like embedded menus). Looks like someone forgot to lock the suits in their padded playpen at night, and let the actual game designers work out the details.
Either Nintendo is releasing a severely restricted controller to get public feedback, effectively getting the public to do the company's job for them, or they are trying to do with the controller what other companies have done with games: sell everything seperately.
Come on. Nobody is going to play S-NES and Gamecube titles with this thing. Nintendo is counting on the public to buy expansions for the Magic Wand, probably with typical marketting BS, like, that each new expansion enhances the experience of the controller, as opposed to replacing it with something that is purpose-built. Nintendo is just going the cheap route, hoping that people will realize that buying a Revolution with a controller "enhancer" is cheaper than getting an XBox 360 or PS3.
It's just another gimick to get people to buy more aftermarket parts. It may work in Japan, as they love this stuff, but in the US market, retailers may have a hard time selling accessories with the console at Point of Sale. Sega can tell you a million sob stories about experimenting with add-ons, and Nintendo may be in for a surprise.
Marc Leveille- ur an idiot. it comes with an add-on that has extra buttons, and the motion sensing function of the controller effectively takes over the role of second analog stick, shoulder buttons and a zooming button or something. so that's 2 analog sticks, a d-pad, a start and select button, an Abutton, a B button, Z1 and Z2 buttons, L and R buttons (by twisting controller), a zooming button, a 'home' button(wateva that is), and although they won't b used for much other than emulating a NES controller u've got the X and Y buttons down the bottom. thats more buttons than on a gc controller. and if ur still not happy, u can go out and buy the ONE attachment that nintendo has confirmed, which boasts more 'conventional' control and is used to emulate past controllers.
here's something to look at.

All u people who say this new controller is crap are stupid. You just look at the controller and think it's a remote, one-handed gaming? It must be crap. I know this doesn't apply to all of u but most of you who hate it, hate it because it looks like a remote. Just think of the possibilities or if you're imagination just suks, just watch the video.
Nintendo are trying something different and i take my hat off to them for doing that. All Sony ever did (i'm not sure bout microsoft) was take other people's ideas. They never once created there own idea. This new controller is different so it will probably be either really really great or will suk terribly.
nintendo revolution is going to sadly fail.
the reason why i am saying this is because the 360 already sold some systems to movie stars like the dude from spiderman and the sony has a bigger fan base such as my brother. i fell sorry to say this because im a big nintendo fan.
richard laughter- didnt u read my comment. it doesnt matter that nintendo dont have as many fans. theyve still got plenty. and my sony and microsoft fan boy friends are slowly but surely buying gamecubes. u might consider gc to b a failure because everyone picked on it and nobody seemed to buy it, but in actual fact nintendo made a profit from it. and thats wat counts. because of the fortune they're sitting on from the last 20 years of innovation and their skills at managing development costs but still making their games fun, i have no doubt in my mind that they'll make even more profit from this. wether it'll beat sony and microsoft, its too soon to say. only time will tell. but it wont lose them money or knock them out of the industry.
Will the Gamecube controller work for the Revolution cause that controller looks really hard to get used to
Those of who commented saying that this console sucks are stupid! Omg this system is awesome! The controller's position will enhance the gaming experience...and plus it looks better than the Xbox360. And how do you know if it would fail? All that is certain is that nothing is certain. The Revolution hasn't even come out yet! I think it's an awesome system!
nintendo is really fallen down after N64,game cube now i can say that they will be third for the third time, like sega they shuld stop doing console
Please, tell me why MOST of the posts supporting the revolution controller are nicely spelt, well thought out, and otherwise "proper", yet the ones bashing it are mostly nothing but average flames from people who obviously can't spell, or better yet read?
omg i dont get how many people dont get this, the normal controller has been goin on for years, its actually time for a company to change that to fit it in todays century and to start a new gaming experience. Graphics, wireless, and all that memory stuff changed except for the controler of every console, nintendo is just starting a revolution, and every console after this will copy nintendo's idea to a certain extent.
When i first saw this i wasnt impressed
Now im just blown away
I can see all the applications it can have
But what about sports games
How can the controller be adapted to that
Also
Will it have any multimedia functions
ok.....
i have a few things to say. first of all, there are two types of people. one type prefers the so-called "old fashioned" way of controlling a charachter in an fps. with 2 thumbsticks. works great, obviosly. the other type has played the nintendo DS and thier world was changed. touch screen, or motion sensing is just easier to control for some people. for those people, the revolution is your console. swordfighting, like on the video. first person shooters. combine the 2. you get an fpf, or first person fighter. you can make up your own moves. you could swing a sword, then shoot a gun, i mean... the posibilities are endless. no one system is better than the other. there are just 2 types of people. p.s.- the revolution rocks!!!!!
Ya so the video is pretty sweet, and I dont mine the Revolution desgin I think its pretty damn sweet. But COME ON NINTENDO!! Some people might like the controller, I have nothing against u guys, but its just so dumb.I mean u use one hand! Dude my hand is gonna be frickin hurting from the design.
Bad choice nintendo. Just do what they did with the 360. Have the same concept as the Gamecube controller but make whatever adjustments u need. Not change the whole frickin controller! Shit man i dont want another t.v. remote! That came with my t.v.!
Nintendo, Your diggin your own grave.
You have got to be kidding on this desgin. It looks stupid to be honest. Who wants to play a video game with a TV remote. Dumb. Also, explain to us all who invested so much money on the game cube to use such things as a steering wheel for nascar games? I don't think Nitendo really knows what the public wants.
Well, I know what I want from Nitendo. Games to be cheaper and games made for all systems not just the DS.(example)
So good luck on your new product. I don't plan to buy it.
well game controller and remote control are ALMOST the same but still i like using both of my hands for gaming.
FOr once & for all- PAY ATTENTION
You can use the controller 1 handed IF YOU WANT TO, BUT ITS NOT NESSESCARY!!
YOu can also drop it onto a TRADITIONAL 2 analog stick shell and use it like the 360 & PS2 controllers!!
Stop being so thickskulled and do your research! This is a NORMAL controller plus a bunch of other OPTIONS, as in they are OPTIONAL.
God you haters make me sick.
What is this video I've heard about, and where can I view it? Cause the controller will either be REVOLUTIONary or completly gay.
Will Gamecube controllers be compatible w/ the Revolution, or any the N64/SNES for that matter
Do you all see the the potential revenue generation this console offers? It is quite apparent that the controller was designed for also playing classic nes/snes games when you rotate the controller 90 degrees counter clockwise. Now from a business standpoint Nintendo is most likely attempting an online marketplace either like itunes where you pay to download each game or a napster or yahoo music store business model where you have access to all the approved rereleased classic games for a small monthly fee. The second model is much more feasible for parents who control the purchasing of games for children. It also makes the whole system more attractive to a potential revolution customer buying the system. I read somewhere the average household buys 3 to 5 games a year totaling averaging around $180 a year in games depending on them being new or used. If nintendo charged $10-15 a month for full access to its library of classic nes/snes/n64 games it could more accuratley predict projected revenue. The Revolution is said to have 512MB of flash memory on board. That is more than enough storage for downloading and storing a few games from an online nintendo classic game downloading service.
i'am gonna get an Xbox 360 but it will only be like an appetizer till the revolution comes out next year
OK LISTEN!!
I am tired of pushing X,X,O,A,B,D it is VERY confusing . I think this is very smart and inovative. The Ps2 controler is VERY uncomfortable to me, and the Xbox controller is comfortable but VERY confusing, the Gamecubes controller is VERY comfortable and relitivly easy to learn. I own a DS and I LOVE it. It is not the basic A B A B Gameboy. I am glad they are doing this. There is like 2 buttons. Praise God. I WILL BE GETTING THIS SYSTEM. So before you start dissing the controller think it over!!
The controller looks stupid and not very user friendly, it is freakin' REMOTE!!!!
