The Palm Treo 700w (aka Treo 670) - Exclusive first look!

Check it out: we got our hands on the new Windows Mobile-powered Treo, but it ain't called the Treo 670 anymore (if it even ever was called that), it's the Treo 700w (which implies-but doesn't guarantee-the existence of a Palm-powered Treo 700p). We haven't spent enough time with the 700w for a proper review - we've literally had it in our hands for only a few hours - but we couldn't resist posting up this first look:

Horizontal screen orientation.

Treo 700w vs. Treo 650. The 700w is actually a bit narrower than the 650.

"Welcome to the Palm 700w smartphone"

Plug-and-play. Getting online with an SD WiFi card could not have been any easier.

With the battery removed.

A few confirmed specs: Windows Mobile 5.0, one megapixel camera, EV-DO, Bluetooth, 64MB of memory, still trying to conclusively determine the resolution of the display, but it looks to our eyes like it's 240 x 240 pixels, not 320 x 320. But we're not 100% on that, ok?

1. is the WIFI card available for the 700? If so, any idea how much?
2. What is the advantage of a wifi card if you have the EVDO service?
This phone looks cool and has all of the neat features, but is it secure? Any data forensics firm that is under court order to look at your phone can carve away all of your most prized possessions and parade them around the court room for you to explanation. I suggest you remain cautious and compliant to your comany's standards. Carving data from a smart phone during litigation is old hat for us. Beware beware are face the music! See www.pglewis.com for more underground information.
Beware of the relatively easy process of a data fornesics firm pulling the family photos, lists, and jewells right from out of your nose. It is easy for someone to do this if they know how, and a no brainer if they have the proper government issued tools!
Is it a Quad Phone - Would definitely go for it.
I bought 2 Treo 650 yesterday & I'm having problem with this device.First the choppy voice & now I can't sync it.I've been on several forums & Palm's support website, downloaded several software, tried to upgrade the firmware to 1.17 but can't cuz I need to sync it.Lots of forum horror stories about this device.I already spent 4 hours trying to figure out how to work it.Can we reformat this & replaced it with Windows Mobile? Not much support for the 2 companies.I'll be returning this on Tuesday if I can't figure how to sync it.This is sooo frustrating.
I feel like a kid at Christmas time; one of those kids that buy something close to what the kid wants, but not quite.
Who is asking for a QWERTY thumbpad? I've never used the optional one that came with my iPaq h6315. The buttons are tiny, and the stylus-graffiti is pretty stinkin' easy to use.
Also, why are people complaining so much about no WiFi? I hardly ever use my wifi on my 6315. I think it's mostly because anytime I'm in an area where I can access wifi, I also have access to a laptop or desktop. The only place it comes in handy is on campus, while I'm in a meeting or a lecture. Usually that isn't very necessary, though, since I can use a computer in a few minutes anyway. Bluetooth seems decent enough. I just use wifi right now to connect to both my laptop and desktop for alternating synchronization. Is there any easy app for synchronizing your laptop, desktop, and pda files?
I just want a bluetooth watch with caller-id and an ignore button. If they also wanted to put a hold/snooze button for my phone/pda, then I wouldn't protest.
I'm pleased to see that there appears to be a start menu hard button. That makes so much sense for one hand use. I'm still shocked that on older PPC OS handhelds you can't click ok with the thumbpad. Shockingly non-intuitive. Hopefully this OS and hardware combo use each other better for more one hand use.
The only hard buttons I want are audio recorder, camera, start menu, accept/reject phone calls, and if possible, the numeric phone buttons.
this is getting long, ttyl.
240x240 ? creeps. Maybe we should pickup a treo650 and load Win mobile onto it...
Some say the Blackberry falls short...well, where the Blackberry shines is in it's support for Exchange email. It syncs EVERYTHING wirelessly, you can invite people to meetings, etc...sure, it doesn't do a whole lot more, but if you just need great mobile email connectivity, it's the best thing out there right now.
I think once the Treos can provide full Exchange support, they will easily surpass the Blackberries. But nobody is there, yet.
Oh yea, who's the loser who brings up John Kerry in a mobile device forum?
"Carving data from a smart phone during litigation is old hat for us. Beware beware are face the music!"
Paul, I have a lot of experience with these types of devices. More often than not, once something is deleted, it's gone. I wouldn't be too worried about data forensics getting your data. Just make sure you delete what you don't want others to see!
Forgive me if I haven't seen a post like this, but my main issue with the 700w, and I've been a Treo fanatic since the 600 came out on Verizon, is that they LOWERED the resolution from 320x320 to 240x240 when they went from the 650 to the 700w. What kind of retarded regress is that?! That alone makes me scoff at the 700w, since one of the major appeals of the 650 is its beautiful, high-res display. Guess I'll wait for the '750' series with the 480x480 screen, as Orneta suggests. :)
Does any one out there know if Palm will be releasing a GSM version of the Treo 700w? Will Cingular or T-Mobile be carrying it in the near future?
Thanks.
As a Palm stockholder, I would like to see 700w to succeed. I wish the design look more different than 650 and provide a few colors for customers to choose from. I don't see the 1.3MP camera very useful. Will be nice if Palm takes that out and lower the price by $50.
For the look and size, motorola Q seems like a winner over 700w and HP 6700.
I am a little worry when Motorola Q coming out in Q1 2006.
Help! I bought the 650 12/26 after holding out for YEARS with my old Palm 230 and a reg cell phone. I am ignorant of HP/XDA, etc. I'm willing to pay. What is the best phone/palm-type device on the market NOW or soon-to-be released that you in-the-know people know of? Help, I'm just a tired CPA!
Hmmmm - unsure . I think that the Treo form factor can easily be provided by the HP 6515 or the new Motorola Q coming out - for that matter, even the Sony p 990 what else could Palm have done but this - they had no choice in the matter - a survival move . This means its now just a win device
It is a shame that these devices are not enable to share the road with me as I venture out on business trips to Europe, Africa and Latin America. Get it right people, it is a small world after all
Picked up my Treo 700w at the Verizon booth in Circuit City at Fashion Island earlier today (I got their first only one). A concern I had about the 650 was low signal strength. I live in the Back Bay with poor reception and was told that Palm made changes to the antenna to improve reception over the 650. I am pleased to say that reception is perfect and I can use it in all parts of my house with no fading. My Sprint phone would only work in one part of my home or outside and even then I had problems with signal fade-outs. I'm sure part of the improvement is simply going to Verizon.
The phone is slightly smaller and seems more sturdy than the 650. I'm female and it feels better in my hand than the wider Blackberries. In fact, it's only slightly larger than my old faith retired Samsung N400. The 700 does not have voice dialing as did the N400, but I can buy software to add it.
I'll post more information after I use more of the features.
So far, so good!
Question for all of you? Alot of you know all the in & outs of the treo 650 & 700w all im looking for is a phone, pda, and the abaility to check my e-mail and hit a couple of websites for work which would be the best for me?
Can you use this while inflight? If you can't you might as well have a regular cell phone
No WIFI - NO GOOD CAMERA SO I DONT BUY IT..
I bought the 650 because of 3 years of bad experiences on Windows Mobile Devices. Reboots, lost data, corruptions, bad multi-tasking - crikes. There is NO way i'm going to follow palm to windows hell all over again. I'll stick to me 650 until Apple finally re-enters the PDA market (and combines my iPod while they're at it)!
My Treo 600 is crashing more routinely, the orange spot on the screen grows larger, and last night it performed a hard reset when all I asked for was a soft reboot. I need a new device but wonder if I should get the 700? Does T-Mobile support the 700? They don't support the 650 as they did the 600. Dazed and Confused
