More Motorola V3X details
About a zillion people sent in the news that Motorola has posted up a product page for their new RAZR, the
V3X. Technically the page
has been up since July, but it looks like they've
included a smattering of new details, like that it'll have a two megapixel digital camera, a 2nd VGA camera for video
calling, Bluetooth (including support for Bluetooth stereo headphones), and support for playback of AAC+, MPEG4, WMV,
WMA, MP3 and Real Video/Audio media files. Not as thin as the original RAZR, but then again you are getting some 3G
action with the V3X, so sacrifices have to be made. Should be out sometime before the end of the year,
probably from Cingular.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this one in]

So does ACC+ imply iTunes?!
is it me or are those verizon Vcast images on the phone?
That looks incredible.
Honestly I could care less about the 2 MP camera since I have a SONY T7, however, that VIDEO CALLING system excites me soooo much.
If this thing supports TRANS-Flash/Micro SD then I am definately gonna pay cash for this bastard.
My uncle recently got a Samsung E430 to work on his TMOBILE account (ordered from Asia) and he thinks its better than my Motorola RAZR - He is right because it is.
It holds 90 MB of Mp3's or pictures.
I wanted to buy a Nextel I870 as my next phone because I have alot of friends and business partners using the PTT feature; it has a transFlash MP3 player and it has bluetooth - this way I can use my JABRA BT 800 with it.
If the V3X hits stores costing less than $500, I am going to be the first guy on line to buy it. Hopefully it will either hit stores before or on the same day as the Nextel I870.
The Mp3 plyer looks especially interesting because I usually carry a SONY MD player with me when I go out with about 50 songs I regularly listen to.
BUT HERE IS MY QUESTION...
Why oh Why did Motorola NOT put MP3 player controls on the face of this BEAST ?
I don't even think iTunes supports AAC+... I think its just AAC. I could be wrong though...
iTunes might support AAC+ (HE-AAC), but iTunes doesn't have a option to rip to that format. and I know for a fact that ipods don't support HE-AAC
the phone does look nice
AAC! Ever since I got my iPod, all of my music has been encoded in that format. If this thing has a 1/8" headphone jack then my trusty old iPod is in for some serious competition.
Then again, I'll have to wait an extra year or more for Telus to get it...
yeah its a nice phone but whats with the colour? i dont know about you but i like all my gadgets to co-ordinate when im out sporting them in the wild! im gonna have black ipod, black psp, black wallet and a navy blue V3X?
This thing sounds like it's actually worth all the attention that was showered upon the first RAZR.
I knew once I finally decided to spring for a fancy phone (just got SE K750i), I'd hear about a whole bunch of upcoming marginally-better ones. I should probably just ignore the gadget sites for a year, so's the envy doesn't get too intense..
could it be? Motorola changing their crappy UI for once. Finally they got rid of that stupi menu button in the middle and hopefully the UI is more like SE's or symbian. But this phone sounds like what the first RAZR should have been.
Having owned many MOTO phones in the past, it will take several successes to get me back in the MOTO fold. Hello HTC Wzard!
no EDGE=lame
i just wish the outside screen was larger and the inside with a higher resolution
So is it just me, or is the technology this phone uses suspiciously absent? The page doesn't say GSM or CDMA, which to me implies the device will be available for both, possible around the same time? Would be great to see this for Cingular/Verizon simultaneously, UMTS/EVDO respectively.
aren't those verizon Vcast pics or video of that lady on the phone?
I have never owned a cell phone nor do I currently own one. Mostly because I don't need one at this point and time. However I keep up with cell phone technology and even seen one smaller then my thumb (few days on attack of the show). This one looks the best looking of them all, or at least that is what I think.
I don't know what EDGE and it probobly has nothing to do with the shape of the phone but i do like the curvyness to it unlike those cellphones where you hold it and it tens to hurt your fingers because of the squaryness to it.
I'd get this phone as soon as I need one :)
#6 you're from Canada eh?
I didn't even think Telus had gotten the RAZR at all.
Jaron, yes, we have the Razr here in Canada. I like the Hp iPaq h6325 though. And the colour for this thing's is lacking in my opinion.
#14, EDGE and EV-DO are high-speed internet access protocols for mobile phones and for pc cards connected to mobile phone networks. They are broadband speed. EDGE is from Cingular and EV-DO is from Verizon and Sprint.
Cheers,
Peter
Correction to #17: EVDO is high speed "3G" internet access; EDGE is considerably slower "2.5G"...big difference...
EDGE is just 2.5G while EVDO is true 3G tech. Cingular going to release UMTS or HSDPA for 3G.
forget edge, cdma, or gsm, this thing is UMTS. it's backwards compatible with GSM
This may look nice, but if it's still just moto's crappy UI, then i want the nokia 6280:
http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/motia_2005/index.php?p=n
can't wait til they have that linux based UI
Cingular first has to come out with its 3G service in order for this phone to make any sense...
the market isn't ready for the Video calling feature yet. Wthout reliable EV-do or Edge its not gonna be smooth/ or may not work in poor service zones.
Hate to say it but Ev-DO can't carry video calls. Ev-DO means "Evolution for Data Only". To be able to carry video calls, you would need Ev-DV ("Evolution for Data and Video") or something proprietary like NTT DoCoMo's FOMA.
Video calling isn't that useful anyway.
when are they gonig to create a Windows Mobile version of this type of device?!
First, let's clear something up...there is no way video calling is going to work on EDGE...EDGE is way too slow...it's not enough bandwidth. And given that Moto has already abandoned EDGE on its other GSM handsets for the Christmas season because of chip problems, it's not likely this phone will have EDGE.
Now, if this phone leapfrogs over EDGE into true 3G UMTS, then great. However, that would presume that Cingular will roll out some 3G coverage in at least some markets.
Video calling requires a huge amount of bandwidth...so the networks need to support that. And with video calling, not only do you need to have a compatible phone and network, so do the people you want to video call, in order for it to be practical.
The phone's designed for europe, poke around the net some more, it does UMTS and WCDMA and all of them european technologies idk about.
For those of you that thinks no EDGE means death, ever heard of 3G??? EDGE is like 2.75G... V3x runs UMTS system, it's a CDMA2000x + GSM module.. If you already have a "3" phone, you know what I mean... It's transfer speed for second phase relased phones are 386kb/sec... And I have no idea of this one, since it's like the 5th phase release at christmas, therefore the speed may improve even more... www.3gtoday.com it's got explainations of the EV-DO, EV-DV, and UMTS systems
I just placed a video call... to MYSELF!
*drools* I want each of my family to have one!
If they ever upgraded it further... a pen and a larger interactive screen on the front would be nice for using it like a palm. There I go again... dreaming.
#24 "Video calling requires a huge amount of bandwidth...so the networks need to support that. And with video calling, not only do you need to have a compatible phone and network, so do the people you want to video call, in order for it to be practical. "
Both of those reasons you sighted will ultimately be the V3x's success or its downfall depending upon how it is marketed.
somehow, I anticipate massive problems with the vieo calling feature. Cingular has shitty service just using voice calls so this video call feature is gonna push their incompetence to the limits.
I believe Cingular should offer a family plan with this phone where you buy two phones (for you and your significant other). I also supposse Cingular will charge more for Video calling. perhaps they will have a special data/video calling plan for $50 or more per month which capitalizes on this feature.
I want this phone but I'd hate to go to cingular for it. I'm not a Cingular customer so unless this phone gets ported to TMobile or verizon I'll just go with the Nextel I870.
T-Mobile had better pick this up too, or I'll personally fly over to the Netherlands or Germany or whatever and personally throttle some executives.
I've put off buying the original RAZR for this phone. I want that 2.0 megapixel camera.
I had the first RAZR and to be honest I couldn't stand it because of the UI. I paid 700 bucks for one just because it looked so cool, but I am getting much more satisfaction from my new Sony phone.
Who am I kidding! I will probably blow tons of cash to get this phone too! I have a problem with thin shiny gadgets!
Motorola's PR people have told me multiple times that the V3x is *not* coming to the US. It's a 3G phone, that should be a hint... The only chance of it being on Cingular would be if it became the first HSDPA phone, and considering its small size that isn't likely.
Sorry guys.
The new V3X has a built in litho-nomylar plubium helix. Its great for those rare moments when you need a quantum tetranose boost. The only draw back is the unusually large quantity of fiscodiamium soft peed that it leaks during alpha phase 1. Never the less, studies have shown that most test subjects do not notice the cortical rot that this might induce until near end of life term. Have fun in any case.
Naugh!!
#33, are these components critical to the flux capacitor?
#2 and #13 -- I wondered the same thing, although I can't seem to find the pic over at Verizon
Wont see this here... especially since no cell officially released in this country has dual cameras. Unless of course this isnt for a GSM. NOt only is it impractical (cost for 3g to drive the video conferencing) its just a plain bad idea - no one here would use it unless the cost for the service drops substantially.
You have to be within 100m of a cell phone mast for video calling to work reliably. I can't see it really taking off the the US.
As people have said, it's a UMTS handset. That means that it won't be coming to the US.
lol, so funny to see all you americans drool over old tech :-) Well, this phone IS extremely sleek, and I still drool, but the only difference between this one and my Moto E100 is the camera and size. Size I can live with (heck - we had huge phones to start with, and we thought that was cool nonetheless), and the camera isn't all that cool (compared to 1.3 MP). There's NO autofocus as far as I can see, but fixed focus at 1.5 meters to infinity, and a hard-switch to another lens with fixed focus at 0-1.5 meters... not nearly as cool as SE's autofocus camera-phone.
I actually like Moto's UI a lot. you can customize everything, and I rarely use anything that shortcuts to perform any task (menu+22 is txt-msg, menu+12 is slashdot.org/pda) - really cool! Don't think they will change that a lot, other than tweaking it a bit...
oh - and btw: trasnflash is nice, but this phone isn't a mp3-phone! After a few hours of playback, you can't place a call... UMTS takes a lot of juice! I think I'll wait untill SE makes a 3G phone with their MP3-playback hardware (30 hours playback), and their autofocus camera (and their T9-dictionary! Moto's dictionary SUCKS!)
:-)
http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/motia_2005/index.php?p=m2
Seems I was wrong - Moto has made a brand new OS, based on Linux!!! Very good news! :-) Too bad that they seem to get rid of all my shortcuts... Anyway - there's an Opera browser in it! Whohoo!
To the person who said that Motorola's PR people told him that this phone wasn't coming to America, I have to say my experience was 180 degrees opposite. I called the Motorola Customer care line to talk to someone on three occassions and on all three, each different representative said that the v3x would be coming to the US as a 3g phone, but with GSM 850 instead of GSM 900.
Dang. The Samsung D307 and now this phone. I'm gonna be sim swappin like a maniac!
Your carrior is allready crippling its featurs as we speak. >=-(
This phone is CDMA. This is for verizon. LOOK AT THE PICTURE. THAT IS THE VERIZON PHONE COMMERCIAL. Use your heads people!
Just to correct a few error throughout these posts:
This phone is indeed UMTS AKA WCDMA AKA FOMA
If Cingular does release it they would first have to launch their WCDMA network. Since this phone does not support HSDPA (think of it like EDGE for WCDMA) which Cingular has commited to launvhing they may pass on this model even after they launch WCDMA.
FOMA is NOT propriatary. FOMA is WCDMA and is the technology used in ALL UMTS phones. But no one can use FOMA phones here because they have no GSM support and there is no WCDMA here yet.
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO CAN do video calling as it is faster then UMTS. But it just has not caught on in EV-DO countries.
EV-DV stands for EVOLUTIO-DATA + VOICE (not video)
EV-DV will not likely ever see commercialization as it has already been surpassed by EV-DO in terms of speed with the release of EV-DO revision A
There is no word on an EV-DO variant of this phone yet. So no it will not go to Verizon in the near future. Sometime down the road they may make an EV-DO version at which time Verizon or Sprint might get it.
i think it is you cause thats not a verizon logo on the phone but im in love with is v3x allready can someone tell me when can we buy it.
tell me who dosent want to get this phone i will marry the girl who gets me this phone for untill i have the phone you know =) but since cingular is starting walkie talkie it would freaking great wow i just cant wait to get it =).
That isnt a CDMA phone. Thats a UMTS(aka WCDMA phone)using the 2100Mhz band(hi europe!) and GSM 900/1800/1900 phone. So in order for Cingular to sell this phone, Motorola will need to make a verison of this phone with UMTS at 1900(and maybe 850 too) and GSM at 850/1900 or just quad-band it.
It's too bad that Motorola doesn't realize that they are already dead when it comes to technology. ROKR is such crap. I'll stick to my SE K750i which already sports a 2.0 mp camera with auto-focus, mp3-player, 3G video-media player and countless other features.
By the time Moto is able to get a 2 mp camera in your hands, SE will be up to 4 or 5 mp camera-phones.
I used to be a Moto fan having owned the original "brick phone" and then the 1st flip phone, later a Vader and a V600. Now I have taken off my blinders and jumped the cell phone camp.
