iPod nano screen flaws?
We haven't picked up a nano for full-time use yet, but
from what we could tell it was made with the same general type of clear plastic (painted white or black underneath,
natch) as pretty much every other iPod. But not a week after a few boards lit up with claims that their users' new
babies' screens were cracking unduly, an Apple discussion board has hundreds of customers complaining that their
facades are scratching way too easily, and that the plastic isn't at all resilient—even for iPod plastic. We even heard
complaints of scratches with a microfiber wipe—that's serious, man. So what do ya think everybody? Has your
nano's screen stood up to the test of time
(i.e. a couple weeks)?

i just ordered a Apple Nano, I hope they'll fix the problem before it ships to me ! :)
My friend owns one and he put that plastic adhesive for pdas on his. Just be smart and protect it and it will hold up. It is a very solid device.
No cracks or huge scratches on mine. I've also used dollar store microfibre to clean it and had no significant scratches. We'll see in the next couple of months though....
im really disspointed with my nano, in the sense that it scratches way too easily, and the comment about "scratches with a microfiber wipe" i think is true. there is no other way mine can possbly be getting scratched.
My nano has fine scratches on it. I can't wait for the various cases to come on the market. This plastic is way too soft.
I too was the lucky guy who had a scratch right across the screen within 10 hours of ownership! I know this is not the answer wants like a recall by Apple but I used Maguire's X scratch polish for small scratches and abrasions. Use a small amount and a wet soft cloth and just do small circles ( try to avoid the click wheel), let it dry, wipe off and repeat several times. I was able to remove the scratches this way. I understand Apples secrecy in trying to bring items to market without all of us knowing, but this is what happens when Apple does not provide a case, or give manufacturers an idea of what is coming to have cases available!. By the way, the Apple Nano armband completely sucks. Silly case colors and a man with any arms at all will find that the armband is too short and would be better used as a tourniquet!. What for other options to hit the market, you will just need to polish scratches out until they arrive.
My black nano scratches like it is going out of business! I still love it though.
FYI - The nano (and it's bigger brother) are not painted under the plastic. They are made with a process called twin shot injection molding. Basically it is actually 2 layers of plastic.
Guys, when you opened up the ipod in its box, what was wrapped around it? a plastic film! If you want to protect the screen, just leave it on! Or you might want to cut it a bit to be able to use the wheel. common sense...
I got a white 2gig and the 2nd day the screen had like 5 scratches on it... i only use it at work and i don't even put it in my pocket.
i HAVE to get some type of protector for it!
I put a perfectly healthy cased nano into my pocket when I left for my physics class, and when I got to the classroom and took the ipod out to turn it off... the screen was half cracked, with crystals leaking onto the un-cracked half.
I sent it off to apple to get fixed, and for now it seems like they're going to do it for free.
I got my nano about 10 days ago and it's already got quite a few scratches. I've only taken in and out of my pockets, but it looks like it's been to war. But that just comes with the territory, you buy a thing to use it, so it doesn't make me think any less of it or Apple.
The scratching on my nano is horrible! I keep it out of my pockets, yet it has accumulated hundreds of scratches, to the point of utterly defacing it's entire front. It looks almost as bad as my Nokia, which I have had for 2 years and utterly abused.
*sigh*
#13, I just ordered that Friday evening.
I noticed my black nano scratched fairly easily as well, but the back was scratching more than the front just from setting it on my desk and stuff like that. Truthfully I haven't touched it in about a week because I don't want it to scratch anymore and won't be touching it until that invisible shield comes in.
I've read various BLOGS that say this was "problem" was posted to the Apple boards by an employee at Creative (iPod competitor) ... as with all problems in the Apple world ... hypochondriacs go crazy!
That said, I am aware that the plastic is more sensitive ... but was the unit that Steve Jobs showed off during the launch event the same? he had that in his pocket for almost 45 minutes before unveiling it - getting up and sitting down and he must have had it for some time before that.
The scratch guard tip above was a good one - but for ANY iPod.
The guy who has set up the flawed nano website has p*ssed a lot of people off by being overly agressive and jumping to conclusions about whether every nano can have a cracked screen. However the scratches problem is very real, my nano hasn't been out of the house yet and it already has scratches (presumably from me wiping it with a t-shirt).
I only had my Nano for a week and there were a lot of scratches on the front. It finally led me to send it back on the account that it was way to delicate for my needs from a DAP. Also the lack of features for $250. The way I see it, if your not getting as many features as you would from a PSP for equal price, then your wasting your money.
Mine had a scratch within 10 mins of opening .. there have been more since then .. and its got nasty fingerprints on the back. I dont really care tho, since you cant notice them when the back light is on...and im not one to dwell on insignificant thigns like scratches ..im more concerned about the longevity of the battery.
Im also thinking of taking fine sandpaper and sanding the back completely ... no more fingerprint trap!
I baby my gadgets and my nano still had a blemish on the the screen the second day. Poor quality plastic. I have been polishing it with Novus #1 and #2 but still can't get this "Blemish" out!?!? Hey, just looked at it after being in my pocket this morn, many scratches, looked better last night!??!!
I have a black 4gb Nano and mine scratched up rahter intensely in my pocket. The black was facing my leg, and I had nothing else in my pocket. Needless to say I was very confused.
Joe Smithy (#10), surely you jest??!
17... why'd you buy in the first place?
I pity the fool who did not read the specifications.
#10 Right. Why don't we just leave it in the box? It'll never get scratched then!
Imagine that, scratches on a portable device. This is truly a dilemma.
There are 5 iPod's in this family and they all have a variety of dents (yes dents) or scratches on them. They all work just fine for their intended purpose -- listening to music in our case.
heh. get an iPod mini if you still can. my 1st gen is virtually indestructible, silver is super scratch resistant, even the screen, i stopped using the case i bought after a while. the screen has even survived with very very few scratches after i callously put it in the same pocket as my house/car keys.
impossibly durable. the iPod mini.
Just got one and took it back cause I had it for a day before it was scratched (that was no easy task let me tell you), honestly I told the dealer that I have glasses (those things that you put on your eyes) that I have had for YEARS and have fallen off my face doing many a stupid things and they have less scratches on them, he hummed amd hawed but gave me my refund thankfully. But I tell ya wait till they change the plastic on the body and screen (that is unless you like cheap plastic that scratches when you breath on it) I am extremely disappointed with Apple because they have the market, and for the money you pay for the Nano they should be putting out a far better(more durable) product than this.
17:
The moment a PSP is the size of a nano I'll be inclined to buy one as a replacement. I see it as a waste of space, you're paying a premium for a reduction in size, not for a plethora of video game features. I don't want a huge object that does 50 things when I just want a small audio player that doesn't bulk up my pockets, that's why the nano replaced my pda, and why I was inclined for the nano over a mini or full iPod.
22:
Except that hardrive being a possible failing point. That's one of the reasons I went for the nano, I originally bought an iPod back in late May and encountered drive issues initially, and returned it. Sure its not a common issue, but it made me realize I wanted something with minimal chance of failure, as I use it for project file transfer, and would rather risk only battery life in the long run over drive failure.
No--I really, really don't think it's "common sense" that you should have to keep your iPod in some sort of additional plastic envelope. In fact, I think that's idiotic. I'm reminded of Apple's calm insistence that eMac owners should remedy their screen problems, caused by the built-in speakers, by simply buying an extra set of speakers. Some of you may love to accessorize your iProducts well into the realm of absurdity. But some of us remember when Apple's standards revolved around simplicity and reliability.
I got my Nano 2 days after it came out. The next day I had it in my pocket. No problems. Then I got to where I was going, wound the headphones around it like I used to do with my regular iPod. Next thing I know, dozens of scratches on the screen, the body, even on the clickwheel.
It's too bad because this is suck a great product but now I'm afraid to use it.
I blogged about this --> http://www.fscklaw.com/?p=84 Copy of text below:
The internet is hot with early adopters of the iPod nano who are complaining that the screen scratches entirely too easy. I note this only because I noticed this two weeks ago, which was just a few days after the release of the nano.
I went to the Apple store to buy a Mighty Mouse, but latently, to get a good look at the iPod nano. The floor units were covered with scratches. I know normal iPods scratch; I have a third generation and it is pretty beat up after two years of use. However, these iPod nanos were only out in the store for a couple days and they were fscked up!!
While I was at the register purchasing my Mighty Mouse, I asked the Apple employee helping me if they scratch easier that other iPods. He replied that they are covered in the same shell that normal ipods are and that the floor units get particularly beat up. I asked him to show me his if he had one. He pulled it out of his pocket, and it was pretty scratched up.
I suspect that Apple is going to have to have some sort of recall. Especially since a large part of their branding is built on quality and that it has been reported that Apple has a 50% profit margin (before marketing and distribution costs) on the nano.
Maybe if people stopped running over them with their cars.
Mine looks like hell. I have had mine for about 2 weeks and already it's scratched enough to (slightly) distort the images on the screen. VERY upsetting.
It does indeed scratch WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too easily.
I ended up buying fugly pastel nanotubes just to hold me over until the GOOD cases come out in Oct.
But what irks me is, why even bother designing a nice looking player if you have to bury it in 1/8th inch silicone because it scratches when you LOOK AT IT!?!?!?
"ooohhh my super shiny nano has a fingerprint"
"ohhh, my super shiny nano has a scratch"
"ohhh, i stuck my nano in my back pocket and sat on it now its craaaacked"
"ohhh, my nano sucks because i use it and abuse it and now its scratched"
Get a clue ya ninnies! I protect my iPod's (yes plural) having owned them since the very first version. Sure, i hate scratches, but guess what, I also know that ANY device that is so flippin shiny is gonna show a scratch. My car does, my mobile phone, my iPod, duh!
Best advice so far, especially to #25, is from #13, invisible shield.
"If there's a problem what do you do? FIX IT!"
-GySgt Judge, USMC Retired (and no that ain't me ya dopes, thats my quote)
So far my white Nano has about the number of scratches on it that I might expect -- no more than that. (I actually picked the white over the black specifically because I thought the black Nano would show the scratches a lot more.)
I have never made any special effort to take care of my iPods and they usually have a quite a few light scratches by the time I sell them. I don't do anything stupid like stick it in a pocket with my car keys, or sit on them, but I've never gone in for cases or protective wraps of any kind. Just my jeans pocket, for the most part -- but not with anything else
I noticed this the other day when I went into the Apple store to look at the new Nanos. After only a few days of being placed on the table for people to view the black one was almost totally destroyed, the white one seemed to be doing better, but not by much.
I had considered buying one because I do like the smaller form factor but seeing the quality of finish I'm going to stick with my shuffle. I don't need to see the names of the songs I load into it, I put them in iTunes afterall.
Right on #25. I was hoping to make the Nano my first iPod, but the "scatches just by looking at it too hard" issue is a *big* nonstarter for me. I'm a big gadget freak and love to try out products and after a few months sell them on eBay to fund the next cutting edge product. That being said, I try to keep everything in mint/like new condition. I always use a case for transport, but don't feel like I need to have to keep a product "locked up for its own protection." I've had PDA's and other electronics that didn't scratch even after months of use including writing on the screen with a stylus for hours a day! Any item that scratches when you wipe off a fingerprint with a kleenix is not for me. Sorry Apple.
I have had a PSP and a nano since they day both were released and have no scratches whatsoever.
I don't use film-based screen protectors for either.
The PSP has a flip cover and stays in a carrying case when not in use. As far as the nano goes, when not in use, it fits pretty nicely in one of those iPod Socks apple released awhile back. Nary a scratch on either one.
It makes me wonder what people are doing. Why would you put a nano in your pants pocket along with change or whatever?
Heck, I have carried my nano in my pants pocket a few times and haven't had issues with scratches (yet).
p.s. I also agree with #30 that you don't hide a visually stunning product in a fuggly silicone case or iCondom...
Anything black and clear coated will show all sorts of scratches, just look at any black car in direct sunlight. Unless the owner is mega-diligent and has lots of time/money to hand detail it, it will be covered in scratches and swirl marks. This is why I ordered the white one before any of this scratching dialog came up.

Comparing the Nano (or anything else) to a PSP is churlish. The PSP - like any games console - is undersold, the cost of the hardware being recouped through the artificially high cost of the games.
As for the Nano - hey it's a relatively delicate, expensive electronic device. Treat it with a little care and it'll last well. If you want bomb-proof music, get a Shuffle.
#31:
You're an idiot.
It's obvious that the Nano scratches much more easily than other portable devices which are meant to be carried on your person. Cell phones and PDAs do not scratch this easily.
What's the point of having a small player if you have to put it into a case that will effectively double its size?
This is a direct consequence of Apple's desire to keep new products secret. Obviously they did not beta test this thing, otherwise this would have been noticed.
Apple screwed the pooch with this one. Sales will tank once word gets around, and they'll have to fix this.
.
.
Confirmed. I have a microfiber baggie that my digital camera came in to prevent scratching. Using it to wipe the fingerprints off the nano has left little scratches all over the screen. As I have not put it in a bag or even my pocket, the only thing that could have scratched it was the baggie. Given that scratches have always been among the bigger ipod complaints, I'm surprised Apple would make this worse.
Why couldn't they just make it the same material as the black Motorola Razr V3? I don't have any scratches on the external LCD screen of my phone, and I keep it in the same pocket as my Nano.
I had a nice fat scratch BEFORE i was able to charge the first time.
The funny thing is I just put a piece of clear packing tape over the screen to reduce the damage about a minute before seeing this link!
Definitely disappointed with this facet of the product. Which is very sad seeing that it is pretty awesome besides this remarkably visual flaw.
As to peope saying 'take better care of it' that's bull. The nano was obviously made to go into your pocket (with change and keys, etc.) and with inferior plastic on the shell I am gussing apple knew pretty well what was going to happen.
I wish i had known beforhand because I would have treated it with kids gloves out of the box and put something on it before I had a chance to mess it up :)
Hey #31....guess what, the Rio Carbon (silver with highly glossy surface) not only doesn't scratch, but it doesn't even pick up fingerprints AT ALL. Apple has chosen to cut corners plain and simple. Scratches and dings should not be part of the equation when you're dropping $250.
Apple needs to take a good look at other manufacturers methods, take the good from all of them and slap something together that's worth the duckets. They already have style out the ying-yang, so the quality part is a no brainer.
ANyway, I'm glad I waited for the backlash before purchasing a Nano. Cause now....I aint.
I ordered the invisibleSHIELD protector, so i'm not using it until that comes, it looks great.

I am so disappointed. I have been treating mine with kit gloves and I swear it scratches if I breath on it. I have tried using special plastic polish to remove the scratches. I haven't taken it back to apple but my guess is they wont do squat.
Cmon, people! These crazy scratches are appearing after only 2 weeks! Remember when everyone complained when their battery was toast after a year? This is even worse.
Get a grip. Sure, protecting a $200 investment IS a good idea, but claiming "you should be protecting it, that's why it's getting all scratched" is ridiculous. It's not hard to make plastic scratch resistant and Apple definitely should have, considering it was designed to be put in a pocket.
My iPod Nano got scratched the first day when I set it on my night stand! I placed it face down so the bright screen wasnt disturbing my sleeping fiancee, and this left two significant blemishes that made the display appear blurred.
Luckily there was a problem with the battery life (I was getting 4-6 hours and not the advertized 14) so I got the unit replaced. I am being more careful now frankly, Im being ultra paranoid about the Nano, lest it be scratched by a stray bit of dust or something.
There are other films that can be used to protect the Nano. I would NOT recommend using packaging tape, as it gets really gummy after a while, especially if it gets warm. Thatd be a messy situation! 3M sells a transparent and super-thin plastic sheeting that can be used as an overlay. I think PDA screen protectors can also be trimmed down and used on the Nano.
One word of note - when any film is used on the Nano, either cut a hole for the control or deal with slightly tough scrolling and clicking.
I'm already considering permanently returning the Nano due to the obvious frailty of the product. I can't imagine what it'll look like in 2-3 months, much less a year or so!
I've been treating mine with the greatest attention to preventing scratches. However, it could not survive a simple 63 story drop from my office building. I think I will return it to the Apple Store and complain about what a crappy product they have made. Go MICROSOFT!
Glossy things I own that I travel with and/or frequently have in my pocket/briefcase that have no scratches:
- Sony PSP
- SonyEriccson K750i cell phone
- Toshiba Gigabeat F40
- Rio Carbon
Funny that all of the above have gone through months of constant use and abuse around the world and are in perfect condition. Yet the nano can't go for 24 hours.
This is not normal, nor is it acceptable.
I looked at the nano's in the store and noticed the severe scratching on the plastic. I am treating mine like a baby till I see someone come out with a product to protect this thing. I also left the plastic cover on the screen but removed it from the rest of the nano. That seems to be helping.

I'm sure you were running the Apple keynote in 1080p on a Jumbotron, and a photographer there with a telephoto lens to confirm. Seriously though. Jobs had it in his jeans pocket. I bet there were several scratches. You just need a higher res source to see em.
Part of the problem is that the plastic used for the outer layer is VERY strong, but VERY easy to scratch. Hell, the stuff is damn near bullet proof. I think this is what the designers had in mind. What they didn't understand is that part of what makes a plastic bullet proof is its ability to disperse the force, which requires alot of flexibilty. That means poor cohesive strength in any small area. That equals scratches. That leads to anger, and anger leads to hate, and hate leads to...
(Note: I am not saying to shoot your iPod Nano. Even though you should. Buggers.)
I think that these complaints about scratches are being blown a bit out of proportion. It has never been a secret that the white ipods collect scratches. Why do you think there are so many cases available out there? I picked up a nano the day it came out in stores, in fact I sold my 40 gig G4 ipod to justify the purchase. There are scratches on it, and I don't use a case, but it hasn't bothered me at all. The only time you really see the scratches are when you hold it at an angle where you get glare on the screen. I dont' know about you, but when I use my nano, I try to avoid glare so I can see the screen.
If you people are returning your nanos because they collect scratches you're missing the whole point. This is the only 4 gig flash player you can buy as far as I know, and it's the thinnest and lightest one in the world and probably will be for quite a while. The photo features are secondary to playing music, and the 'prettiness' should not be as high a priority as the main features: solid state memory, size, and itunes syncability. Yes, sleekness is a cool bonus, but it shouldn't be the reason you buy an mp3 player, not by a long shot.
I think everyone who's complaining should get their priorities straight, buy some scratch removing products, or return the nanos and buy a bulky PSP that holds 200 songs max. It's one thing to hold Apple products to high standards, but it's another thing entirely to blow something out of proportion.
I've had my nano since release, carry it around in my pocket completely unprotected all the time, and I have no major scratches on it's face. The back has a few scuffles, but I don't mind and expected that. I ordered a screen protector for it last week just to be safe, but I can't imagine people having all these scratch issues based on my own experience.
No scratching on mine.
"No--I really, really don't think it's "common sense" that you should have to keep your iPod in some sort of additional plastic envelope. In fact, I think that's idiotic."
I agree with this. It's not acceptable that you should have to do this to protect a brand new device from being cosmetically digned up through normal use. (And by "normal use", I mean using it the exact same way the CEO of the company demonstrated - keeping it in a pocket with whatever else is in there.)
I have a 20GB iPod and that thing scratches really easily, but then it's not made to be kept in a pocket. Still, I already consider it unacceptably scratch-prone - I've been hoping for a redesign of the line ever since I got mine. Unfortunately, Apple seems to be regressing back to that old design (and maybe even making it worse) rather than going with the much tougher iPod mini design for their new products. This is just stupid for a product that's *meant* to be carried in your pocket.
People who say this problem is endemic to portable music devices have obviously never used an iPod mini. The mini is for all intents and purposes indestructible, and completely scratch-proof. You could probably scratch the screen if you tried hard, but my wife takes no special precautions with hers and there's not a scratch on it. And the body itself looks exactly the same as the day I bought it for her. She is *extremely* happy now that I got her a mini while they were available; she is glad she does not have a nano. She's very hard on her portable stuff (she cracked the screen on her last cell phone the week she got it).
Why Apple took probably the toughest design for any portable player on the market and ditched it in favor for probably the most *fragile* design on the market - and for a player that you're meant to keep in your pocket - is beyond me.
I love my 20GB iPod and I love the *idea* of the nano but the way it's been executed just seems pretty poor.
I was surprised how easily it scratched. I am always very careful with my new electronics and even having it on its own with nothing else in my pocket it became extremely scratched like it was rubbed with steel wool.
I'm still walking around with the plastic protection film that my 4gb black nano came with. (yes, looks incredibly dorky. s'ok, I can handle it)
Until I can buy a nice case for it i figured i wouldn't take the chance. looks like it was the right choice by the posts on this thread.
yea, my black nano got abused in a couple of days, now it looks as if I had it for month......but thats ok I'm just waiting for the new iskin nano to be released in october.....
I think it's all relative to what you expect. I have a nano and love it to pieces. It has scratches on it. Lots and lots of them. But they're small, and unless you look closely you don't notice them. If you expect that these will occour, as I did, it's no big deal. There are no scratches that I would call "major," but this is all point of view. I take care of my Nano as much as is reasonable, and I don't expect the scratches that are there and will continue to happen to bother me. If I look closely at anything plasic I have, I notice it has scratches on it. PDA - scratched. Calculator - scratched. But it doesn't bother me because they aren't large or deep enough to be bothersome. Same with the Nano, it's just shiny enough that you can see the small very minor marks.
i bought one about two weeks ago, i had one problem with it not turning off. it was also very scratched up, might i say from just going into my pocket and sitting on the dash of my car. I got a new one, that was perfectly fine up until about 20 seconds after i opened the box and used my hands to play with it.
Adding on to my previous comment, the issue of cracked screens is a different one entirely. I've heard reports of the screen cracking without obvious cause. This is a seperate and if true a much more serious issue. I haven't had this problem. If it happens to me, I'll deal with it and will complain to Apple.
Can you try putting that clear sticky paper over it and cutting around the clicker? I would call it laminate, but i thought you had to put it through a hot wheel machine.
That or you could just buy a cheap one on ebay, or the effective $20 one mentioned above. (Invisishield)
It's true.. I've had my Nano for a couple weeks I guess.. I've used it hmm 7 times or so and held it gently in my little hand so as not to scratch it while I'm waiting for my cover to arrive. Yes, I've gently swiped it using a soft cotton cloth a few times..and did expect to maybe see some little swirlies.. but there's officially a scratch on the screen now.. these Nanos are testy little buggers!
My Nano's screen quickly scratched after carrying it in my pocket. Fortunately, only very slightly. Although this sounds hokey, I have wrapped it in saran wrap. It doesn't look fantastic but it does an admirable job protecting the unit. I have since been carrying it my pocket for 2 weeks and have not had any problems. When the wrap gets warn, rewrap it.
Funny, as i was peeling off the protective film when I purchased the unit, I realized that it would offer good protection. Oh well, too late.
I had my iPod Nano for 2 days and was walking to work and it got scuffed up by having it in my pocket with my chapstick. I am so mad. Does anyone have an idea to fix it, maybe a eyeglass repair kit for scratches?
It's beyond acceptable. This is a defective product that Apple will have to deal with. My screen was smudge or scratched after only two hours in a loose shirt pocket and nothing else. And yes, one of the microfiber cloths I tried on it scratched it more.
It's simply a poorly cured or manufactured polymer surface and must be replaced. I'm taking mine back next week.
Scratched to hell after a week and I treat my electronics well. There's one thing: a player with a sratch or two shows character but one that is unusable after a month despite being treated well is...class action lawsuit! <--punctuation changed as a result of comments made by a friend. Girls tend to use exlamation points more than guys.
Why can't you Apple fanboys see the fact that if a product is designed correctly with the right material, then you won't need all these stupid shield guards and protector cases.
Accountability should on Apple to turn out superior products, not on consumers to buy additional protection gear!
here is a tip. get some micropore tape(the stuff made by 3M) and when you have dust that has settled on the display, take a strip of the micropore tape and put it on the screen and lift it off. trust me that will really get rid of the dust. i use this technique on al lmy cd'ss dvd's and anything that has dust settling on it. it was aperfect way to clean my psp screen before i applied the screen protector. And by the way, when apple make such a fragile piece of kit as the nano, it is no wonder the screen scractches up so bad. Anyway i hope that my little tip helps. oh and the 2 inch tape is the best as you will be able to cover more area that way. you can buy the 3M surgical tape from every chemist, and you will probably find some in your first aid kit. peace to1 and all!
iv just about saved up for a nano but i duno what to do now, would it be better to wait until ipod nano gen2 come out or will that be ages away?
#41, #45, #47 - Chill out, #31 was making a joke about the ars technica review where the staff ran over the nano with a car - both wheels, twice - and the nano still kept playing.
I got mine a couple of weeks ago.... and YES...if you even look at it wrong it will scratch !! And of course APPPLE has NO cases out for it as yet.... NO stores have em, not even NYC...I have cut out a few LCD screen saver films the kind for the handheld palms etc... and placed them over the front and back..
The jog wheel STILL WORKS with it on...I just hope theirs no damage when I finally do get a case ( hurry up APPLE ) and it rips or messes up the wheel... YIKES !!!
I was very careful with my new Nano, and it got a huge scratch on the second day of use. It's much easier to scratch than any other electronic device I've had.
i've had mine for 2 weeks. SCRATCHES WAY TOO EASILY. 4GB BLACK
I don't have a Nano yet, but right away after playing with it at the store i knew that whenever i buy it i want to protect it right away. I just hope they have better protection for it in about a month.
Also the running band looks cheap and easy to scratch the Nano.
"iv just about saved up for a nano but i duno what to do now, would it be better to wait until ipod nano gen2 come out or will that be ages away?"
It would be better to just find an iPod mini somewhere that still has them in stock. Don't count on Apple *ever* fixing the nanos, unless this really starts to affect sales (it might, but then it might not). The Japanese market is hyper-sensitive to issues like these so their reaction might be more indicative of whether Apple will ever issue a fix for this.
Even if they do, though, I would doubt anything will happen prior to the now-standard six month refresh. If they roll out an update prior to that, it'll be done quietly and piecemeal, without any PR, meaning people will just start showing up on message boards saying "well, my new nano hasn't scratched at all" and then there will be rumors of new models for a while and you'll never know if you're really getting a fixed one or not when you go to a store to buy. It'll be a mess.
If you want an iPod now, find a mini. It's really not *that* much bigger, but it is *that* much better built and is cheaper at the same capacity (or the same price with more capacity).
Scratched the first day from my coin pocket (I thought I was cool like Steve Jobs) I decided to use a "plastic adhesive for pdas" The pre adhesive micro fiber cleaning cloth scratched the screen. I think If you blow on it the screen will scratch. The sad thing is I do not really care I love it. It is kind of like a hot chick with a bad laugh.
the screen sux and the body does to..my nano is scratched way more then it should be..
My nano screen was a bit scratched the first day of use. You have to be very careful with it, using some protection and never put it in a pocket with keys, coins or the mobile phone. I tried to make a case with a postcard

but it didn't really work.
I'll have to wait until a decent protection or case is available, or design a better one.
I purchased one from the first batches that hit stores (Circuit City)... took it out in the car played with it awhile. When I got home, I used my cotton shirt sleeve to wipe it off and noticed scuff marks. Later that day I accidentally dropped it faced down at the gym on carpet. The screen is now horribly scratched... something that's yet to happen with my regular ipod. I hope apple does something for current owners to remedy the situation.
I don't know what happened to my nano, but after 2 weeks it got the rainbow effect on the entire screen so I am returning it and getting a different one.
Could the increase in scratching actually just be an increase in the obvious-ness of the scratches with all the new black Nano's? Black is going to show a lot more fine scratching than white, thus you're going to see a lot more complaining with black Nano's than we've traditionally seen with the white iPod's.
Why could Apple use the scratch resistant coating used in the eyeglasses / sunglasses industry for quite a long time?
Or even something like what Imation does with their DVDs?

Hmmm... I think I'll just wait till winter to get one, maybe Apple will have their thinking cap on right by then. I'd just go get one now, but as a first time apple buyer, i'm not in to the whole "acessory" thing, being that I just want the pod, no scratches, no "rubber pastel" cover. That would just look stupid on the black one.
Presonaly, I don't get why people can't wait to buy things a while after it's released, *allow company to correct settle mistakes* AFTER other coustomers find these flaws.
I got a black nano and it scratches as soon as you look at it. Its so stupid on Apple's part to use such a bad plastic. I can only think they are trying to cut costs with the production/materials of the nano. I have been using AppleSauce polish which is good and I intend to put a layer of Lux high gloss polish on it. So long as the screen doesnt get too distorted i'm not bothered that much. I would like a company to release replacement fascias for the nano. Maybe a metal one? A wooden one? Different colours? Because I think the faceplate of the nano is easy to get off and replace - I think...
Would you rather have an ipod wrapped in tape or have some scratches on it? How fucking stupid. Does it really matter if it has some scratches on it??? Did you buy it because it looks nice? That would be idiotic. Function over form, always!
ive had my 4gb black nano for almost a week, and there are TONS of scratches on it. even when i opened it and took it out of the plastic there were a few scratches on the back and one big one on the front. i still love the nano, though.
I agree with 96... It's a tool... It's going to get sratched as it gets used... Wipe up the drippy vaginas and stop complaining... If you are going to complain about it, don't buy one.
Pretty simple.
my nano is fine. the first scrates on a new ipod always suck. the screen on mine is good too.
I've had my white 4 gig since 9/9 and immediately wrapped it in a microfiber cloth until I could buy a good case. Except for one small scratch caused by my thumbnail, the nano doesn't have a mark on it.

my girlfriend has a black one. carries it in her purse and pocket. a couple of tiny scratches sure, only visible under certain angles of light. big deal ya pansies!
I would personally go for this: http://www.colorwarepc.com/content.aspx?id=50. Avoids scatching all together, and you still get a nano which does not need an steel box to protect.
Anyone else find it interesting that most of the comments about the scratching look like they're written by the same person... Same grammar, same phrasing, same conclusion: "had my Nano X days, took good care of it and the scratches are unbearable, so it's a flawed product."
Yet the "hardly noticeable, get over it" guys use different forms of speech.
I wonder if there's something to the rumor that the issue was started by competitors? Mud sticks, and so, apparently, to complaints of scratching.
I don't care because I don't want a Nano. And in a way I sorta hope it tanks because then Apple might actually release some new Macs! So...
"Yeah, baby, those cuts are real bad - one of them took my whole leg off. Don't buy this product! Buy a Zen. It's so ugly you won't care if it scratches."
I was at the Apple store this weekend to see the Nano up close. The screen was scratched to all hell. Who knows how many people had already handled the thing.
I went to a store to check it out when it first hit the shops, and all the demo models were really scratched!!! I mean they were deep, this is in Tokyo, where people tend to be quite careful with stuff in shops too!! Seeing demo models looking so bad, i wondered if buying one would be wise.
