Memory Stick Micro M2, yet another memory format
Oh god yes, finally, what consumers have been demanding for nigh on years now — another friggin' memory friggin' format. Sony and SanDisk were showing off the new Memory Stick Micro M2, measuring 15 x 12.5 x 1.2mm (about 1/4 the size of the Memory Stick Duo), designed to compete with MiniSD cards as well as to be increasingly easier to lose. Yes! Apparently the format has a theoretical maximum of a whopping 32GB of storage capacity which, if true, might make us momentarily pause from our normal "but whyyyyyy another goldarn format already?" routine and take notice — but somehow we have a feeling these won't just be popping out during the first days of product rollout, which should be sometime in the first half of 2006. No word on which sizes will be rolling out, neither, so we safely return you to your regularly scheduled bitchfest.

This is getting ridiculous.

THAT is a whole lotta music files on the about-to-be introduced Sony Ericsson Pxxx(x).
They keep coming out with these things because they need to keep selling them.
Saffy @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
"...we safely return you to your regularly scheduled bitchfest."
Priceless. :)
But anyway,I'd say chances are, the whole "theoretical maximum" thing is just Sony and SanDisk's way of blowing smoke up consumers'...well, you know where. They're just trying to justify *another* format by putting out sexy numbers.
Until they actually maybe EXPLAIN why and how this format is so special, how all those gigs are gonna fit in this thing, when they don't fit in the 12 thousand other teeny, tiny little cards, I'm gonna have to call horse shit on this one. The world needs another memory stick/flash card format about as much as the the gulf coast needs a few more category 5 hurricanes.
LAU @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
Makes sense it's introduced during the first months of next year, since it's the scheduled release date of Hermione (prototype name), the next P series smartphone from SonyEricsson.
Hermione is scheduled for release in week 6.

32 GB? It'll change the face of gadgets if it's true
semi @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
fu*king stupid!
Chester @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
I'd much rather have larger storage capacity than smaller physical size. Have you seen a Memory Stick Duo? They are tiny. However the price per MB is anything but.
yonatron @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
Ow. My head hurts. I've already way too much anxiety over my need to purchase a bigger MS Pro Duo for my phone, since I've got extra CompactFlash and SD lying around from my cameras and Palm. Owie ow ow.
The real question: will these come with a micro->duo adapter so I can pop 'em in the k750i? If so, can I use that adapter inside the duo->fullsize adapter to put one in a sony camera? That'd be cool.
Whiplash @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
Am I the only one that questions why the Sony Memory Stick logo looks like a stereo speaker?
QUANTUMPHYSICS - XboxLive @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
according to Wikipedia, standard Memory Stick Pro has a theoretical limit of 32 Gigabyte. Since this technology is suppossedly newer (made with better designs as a result of improved technology) I would think it should have a higher theoretical limit.
Of course, you and I both know that a memory card that holds more than 10 GB is not going to be released on the consumer market until our media's size begins to approach the Terrabyte range...anything with that much capacity for a low price would inflate the entire market and cause developers to switch to that format and grant Sony a monopoly.
m @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
this is basically a transflash card people. aka Micro SD.
Christopher @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
"32 GB? It'll change the face of gadgets if it's true"
All for the low low price of
*puts pinky in mouth*
one beeelion dollars!
*laughs maniacallY*
Seriously theoretical limits that high aren't a selling point until memory prices are on par with HD prices.

i thought the new sony ceo was going to kill off the memorystick format in favor of the sd cards...
memorysticks as well as our beloved aibo
Steve @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
if im not mistaken, every memory card has announced mega-huge theoretical maximums when they were introduced. By the time its actually possible, there's a better format out there.
tranjsaic @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
I wonder if this bad boy will work with the PSP, I need more damn storage. I would rather use this instead of a bulky harddrive attachment.
George @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
Make a 10Gb or more model for less than 100 and add a Duo adaptor. Alternatively just make a 10Gb Duo Pro.
That would make me a very happy chappy.
DirtHerder @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
GRRRRRRR
Being a Sony Lover... AND a Memory Stick Pro lover.. it is getting increasingly difficult to stay in love.
I mean the Duo was bad enough. Now this!
I was totally behind Sony trying to unify a memory format for all of their products. I mean people bitch about the proprietary format thing... but there really is no "standartd" out there, so at least Sony was stying to stay consistent within its brand.
But the Duo... and then this? Pretty much tosses that defense out the window.
Way to go Sony.

Rob @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
silly. Why does sony always have to be difficult. No wonder they are shedding 10,000 jobs worldwide.
ZipperSeven @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
Yeah I need another proprietary Sony memory stick like I need an assh0le right here
Cashmore @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM

Oh crap, I dropped my Memory Stick Micro into long shag carpeting. Now I'll never find it!

That last comment was so unfunny that people stopped writing.
"...we safely return you to your regularly scheduled bitchfest."
Priceless =D
Anywayz, bring on the bitching!
WTF? This is so unbelievably useless... suuuuch a useless... nobody needs this many formats! Way too many... Memory stick DUO was perfect. Make it 10GB and it'll be the "standard" format. Seriously! It's compact and its from sony. It's really cool I love that format, this is simply idiot. Way to put your own head in the toilet, sony... NOW FLUSH, PUBLIC, FLUUUSH! I want this format so dicretited that it gets taken of the market!!!

#19 lol :P i used to love sony products until memory sticks, to expensive. I have alot of complact flashes and sds, they are very cheap compared to memory sticks.
Elias @ Dec 19th 2005 1:25AM
The consumers don't like 'yetanotherformat' but I'm sure SanDisk, et al. are laughing their asses off all the way to the bank.
