Oho, we're sure that firmware 2.01 will add loads of compelling new features and, uh, added stability… or something. Nahhhh, Sony just wants you to update so that you can't downgrade anymore. What — us, cynical? Be on the lookout for v2.01 arriving soon so that you can avoid it like the plague.

You talk of entitlement, and that is exactly the point. If you go out, buy a PSP, and use homebrew, its your own damn business. Once you give mony to Sony to get their product, its yours. Sony can feel free to fight piracy at its online sources or whatnot, but intentionally limiting the capabilities of a device they ALREADY SOLD TO YOU "AS IS" is sending a good old F-You to the consumer.

It seems that the coward in your name is well chosen. You say that we are whining because Sony doesn't "cater to our every desire." Now, while you with your sniveling obedience to the Man, might be willing to fork over $400 dollars and then take it up the ass while they DELIBERATLY limit their devices capabilities AFTER THEY SOLD IT TO YOU. Perhaps you need a metaphor. Lets say I sell you a computer for $1000, with a wireless card I built in. After I sell it to you, I put a virus in your computer to disable the wireless card, because god forbid you get free internet access in starbucks and don't have to pay me more of YOUR money to hook you up to the internet. Doesn't work, eh? If I buy a PSP because I want to play some homebrew, as well as new PSP games, I certaintly expect the device to retain all of its abilities, even if they were not intended. Its just not right that you sabatoge a device, even if it will make you more money. I have no idea why you defend Sony when what their doing is such an abomination to the ideals of a consumer based market, Democracy, and basic ethics.

he's no fool, anyone can see that, and while i'd debate him on a few finer points, and enjoy it, as he does have a way with words and is obviously an intellect (detaching lips from his booty at this point), if ye sit down and calmly think of it like a rational adult and put aside the 'i want stuff free cause i deserve it' child-like mentality, ye'd see that he and i make the same point, although i think we come from different walks o' the field.. (not entirely, i think he's a physics student, i for one am a Biology student specializing in bioengineering with a minor in computer science.. as if anyone needed to know or cares.. but i like to ramble on..)
What he's saying, what i'm sayin and what SONY is screaming is that HOMEBREW is NOT evil. if everyone were content with playing tetris and SNES or Sega Master System roms, then we'd all be havin a dandy o' a time..
the problem is people have not and will not stop there. they cross the line. they MUST have iso loaders.. agin, lads, i beg ye to look at any psp/forum in the past week and ye'll see a deluge starting EXACTLY the day of the release of the downgrader of posts from one 'new poster' or 'new to the psp mod scene' freeloader after another.. all asking the same thing.. how do i get homebrew a.k.a. "FREE PSP GAMES".. they dont mean PONG psp, fellas, they are talking about MADDEN 06, and Burnout legends, dynasty warriors and any other game they want but dont want to pay for.. it's the equivalent of sneaking into the theatre to see star wars on opening night.. sure ye WANT to see it so bad, but if'n ye dont want to pay for it, then why do ye want it so bad to begin with?
Sony did not make the psp for us to homebrew. sure they made it CAPABLE, and WE found the hacks to exploit it's hardware, but it's NOT what it was intended for. so to say that Sony has no right to tell ye what to do with it, is ethically and logically incorrect. the system was MADE for playing media files and playing GAMES, namely THEIR games.. thats why it says SONY PSP on it. what ye are tryin to argue is pointless. sure ye paid for it, but ye didnt BUY it for homebrew and most of ye knew it.. ye bought it either for it's multiple applications media, mp3, and the occassional cool game ala GTA: LCS or SOCOM.. but NOONE intended to own it so they can STEAL, and ye shouldnt be purchasing it for that reason. it's wrong. we may do it, even i cannot deny my own guilt of the occassionaly 'skullduggrey' but i dont fool meself mates. i know what i do may be considered or sometimes flat out IS, but i make the decision to do what i do and i accept the consequences.
take this analogy to support anonymous coward's arguement: a company makes a pill that helps impotence in old men. some fool discovers that if ye crush it up and put it into a drink, it makes a great date rape drug. does that make it right for everyone to run out and buy this pill in droves for the intent purpose of sleeping with half the women in the city just because ye can? now some of ye are sayin 'why such an extreme example HtP? and i answer because what ye are doin is no better in the eyes o' the law. it's still a crime, and ye might not see it from THIS end, but ye are hurting people to an extent. every time ye pirate an album, a movie, or a game, ye think ye might be stickin it to the corporation, but oh no, they dont suffer one bit. instead it's the artist, actors, programmers who suffer. now it's easy to dismiss this as, "well they are overpaid anyway and i work at 7/11 so it's time i got a little payback" but ye got to realize the people who DO suffer are the grass roots bands.. unless ye like yer music of the corporate variety (see. britanny spears), ye are killing any original content. it's already hard enough for a decent gaming company to get started with an original idea, and sony hates originality unless it comes from a super money making idea.. how many o ye played "God o' war" or K.O.T.R.? if'n ye do yer history, ye'll see that those games BARELY made the final cut and were almost cancelled. Sony didnt have faith. Psychonauts and me personal hero Tim Schaffer (creator of grim fandango, day o the tentacle and the GREAT GREATEST games ever "monkey island") was cancelled by Microsoft at it's completion because they felt that platformers such as that game were too 'immature' for today's 'hardcore gamer' based on what they percieved was the reason for sony's dominance. thankfully a thirdparty publisher picked them up and guess what.. psychonauts was one of the BEST games ever on the xbox console, and one of the best games o the year and in me humble opinion of ALL time, with a sequel on the way.
if ye want to keep great ideas coming and new games fresh, (GTA started underground and struggled for YEARS before hitting it off with gta 2) then ye need to stop cutting into these companies overall budgets. because while they cant make US pay, it's the employees who end up footing the bill. unless ye like car racing games and GTA clones until the end of time..
me, i prefer me games to be alot like me women: lots o variety, fun to mess around with, and the occassional rental ;)

after all, if'n ye were in their shoes, ye'd do the exact same thing. nobody makes somethin for nothin (except homebrew dev-teams.. and even they ask for donations from time to time)..

I have never heard such a huge bunch of whiners before. All you losers complaining about the PSP firmware security updates are just bitching because you can't pirate EVERYTHING you play on it. Isn't pirated movies and mp3's on the memstick enough for you pussies?

the psp is sooo cool - we all know - when you hold it, it's like the coolest bit of hardware ever - For me - I can't do without the latest games. THATS WHY I BOUGHT IT! But the homebrew stuff is such great fun. STOP piracy encourage creativity. SONY realise this and help
No one should hold it against Sony for doing what they have to in order to make money. If you ran the company, you'd probably do the same thing. Concurrently, no one can hold it against the hacker community for begrudging the cold war Sony unwittingly started by allowing functionality and then attempting to take it away. So, each side has their motivations, and they are logical and valid on both sides. There are no real good guys or bad guys here. It's more like a chess game. May the best man win.
fact is.. about 95% of the 'Homebrew' community is noobs and lamers out for a free 'ride'.
the reason SOny be putting up such a hard fight and clamping down on homebrew and creativity is that they recognized the potential for misuse almost instantly.
the majority of the populace is irresponsible, as is being proven by the rampant theft and piracy going on as we speak. Check any PSP forum. ye'll see post after post after post of people wanting to find out, help with, or how to obtain CURRENT PSP games that they can put on a memory card and play for free, with not a concern about Sony.
People cant be trusted, thats just a fact of life. If ye leave the door open, they'll come in and rob ye blind.

why is there no other functionality built in to the PSP - where's the calender for god's sake - where's the PIM functionality - where's the usable keyboard - where's the PDF viewer - where's the text viewer. Sony are holding out on us for one reason - To rob us blind!

If your so mad, why don't you just shut the fuck up and buy a Nintendo DS, Oh wait, I forgot you can't watch movies, browse the web, listen to music, play games with better tech. and better graphics, download shit onto your PSP from the web, ECT, ECT. does anyone else think that the real reason the ps3 won't be out till next year is so that the price of blu-ray readers and cd's will be lowered enuff so that we can afford it but won't be tempted to hack it cause it will still cost to much to waste the $400
