That's not what was said. You guys have the worst reading skills.
What was said is that they are subsidizing the hardware, so they have a vested financial interest in seeing to it that you buy games and movies for the system they sold you (at a loss).
Or rent them, since they get a cut from places like Blockbuster. What they don't want you to do is (a) pirate games. (b) buy the hardware only for homebrew.
Therefore, when people say "why doesn't sony allow homebrew?", the answer is obvious. If you buy their system and don't buy games, it costs them money.
If you don't like it, hack the system. Just don't act like Sony should be doing you some kind of favor and writing a special version of the firmware that allows unsigned code to run. The very suggestion, which has been made by a number of posters here, is tremendously stupid and naive.
As are apparently half the other posters, who do things like accuse me of owning Sony stocks, or of not having a job (do you even understand how graduate education is funded, Einstein?), or my favorite, the poster "Jeff" who accuses me of hiding behind the name "anonymous coward", when, last time I checked, there were thousands of people with the first name Jeff in the English speaking world. I don't see you posting your full name, street address and phone number.
The truth is, there are a bunch of self-entitled whiners throwing a hissy fit because Sony isn't catering to their every desire. Since they can't come up with a solid counter argument to mine, they resort to personal attacks that have nothing to do with the topic of the thread.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
