Even more Sony Ericsson Hermione/P950/P1000 pics
Even more blurry pix of the Sony Ericsson Hermione
(AKA, p950/P1000) smartphone in action over at kataweb.it. We're now hearing it will sport a 2 (not 1 or 3)
megapixel camera in
addition to the rumored WiFi and Bluetooth. Can't say for sure, but we might just get a product launch at the London
Smartphone Show next week.
[Thanks, Tony]

I dunno if its just me, but i really dont like the design of the whole front of the phone, it looks like its been poorly photoshopped or designed by a 10 year old.
Man, I Dont know.. this thing looks so unpolished. Anyone else get that feeling? Like its a beta design or something.
For some reason i feel that the design in a way took a step back..somthing about it isnet quite right....
Ya TZK i see wat ur saying...aha
Oh this is getting silly! Why don't SE use some common sense and use a slider format? The numeric keypad hidden to slide out (as per Samsung D500 etc) and then they could also protect the camera lens behind the top part of the slider. Why that silly flip down keypad that gets in the way? (I owned the otherwise excellent P900 for a year.) Sliders are the most popular, practical and exciting phone design yet ignored on smart phones. Why????
Looks horrid
i wish i can have that free cellphone!
Am I the only one seeing those deep scratches in it's display? I think it's a dummy.
Sony's downward spiral is getting hard to watch. There doesn't seem to be a plausible design reason for the higned number pad to exist other than to be different than the Treo. Perhaps it was invented soley to epitomize the word "fugly"?
Yeah I was wondering about the flip-pad too? Why bother when the keyboard is already on the unit...
I agree about the slide out keyboards aswell. So much more functional. If Sony went that route they could still keep the large screen.
What no Jog-Dial? This was one of the best parts of the P800/900 phones. I can operate most of the functions on my P900 with one hand using the ingenious 5-way Jog-Dial. It's a deal-breaker for me, even moreso than the ugly looks (which are dissapointing).
I swear man.... this phone better come out SOON! or else imma go nuts. Everyday my P900 is killing me, seriouly. Some functions are just not working right. I can format, but I do not really want to reformat this sucker or else my software and settings will be gone.
I'm skeptical that this is the upgrade to the p910 - the screen size being the logical benefit to the flip - by having the keyboard below the screen, you're kinda back to square one, treo style, with a squarish screen. If the p910 has anything going for it, it's a giant screen AND can fold up to approximate a large-ish phone. I don't get this move if it's legit and a progression. It's hard to believe they couldn't get a backlight into the existing platform and call it a victory.
As posted by Tom 'Why bother when the keyboard is already on the unit...'
My thoughts exactly, its just gross. I was hoping to see more screen under the flip like my P910, but I guess not.
Im guessing a somewhat smaller screen will help the battery (Not so fast drainage). Thats one phone Im not looking to buy anytime soon, lol
I'm pretty sure the Jog Dial is still there - see the small elipse along the top edge of the phone in the back shot, close to the second finger?
I think the answer to "why the flip?" is "why not?" - the screen dimensions are the way they are because this phone uses the new UIQ3.0, and that's all the display it needs. Unless they make the phone awkwardly short (which they probably couldn't do unless they made it fatter anyway) they have room at the bottom for the keyboard; but have kept the flip as well so you still have that switch between one-handed/two-handed form factors that made the rest of the P series so great. Of course there will be those that go on about not using the flip anyway, but for the rest of us being able flip up for things like predictive text on the move, and then down for full PDA-style action, is a real dealmaker.
Not only do I like this design, I think most of the complainers will probably come around once they see it in the flesh. If the specs are right, this looks like a killer.
Hey Sony. Hot tip: most keyboards are wider than they are tall. Try using a computer keyboard when it's flipped sideways. Hint hint.
Er, WG, you do know that you're looking at the keyboard sideways in that pic? In normal use this keyboard will be wider than they are tall too.. I don't really see your point.
It does look like the jog-dial is there. Look in the bottom picture, it's on the top (left side of the phone). If the phone has touch-screen capability like the other UIQ devices, it will be a great handset, even without the flip. The size looks a lot better too, it looks about the size of my N6680--which is about perfect when compared to the overly huge blackberry's, Palms, and Moto-Franklin's of the world.
The jog dial will be three-way, not five-way and the "scratches" are where somebody's tried to remove the text somebody put on the original photo at: http://www.p950.com/images/stories/p950_2.png
Hmm, this 990 looks interesting. But I don't see the benefits outside of the UIQ3-wifi, and memory. In fact I dont understand some of the earlier comments about the screen. "the screen dimensions are the way they are because this phone uses the new UIQ3.0, and that's all the display it needs", that statement I do not understand. UIQ 3 doesn't need more scrren area to be seen better?? Why a smaller screen???? I've read elsewhere that the screen provides for a larger viewable area. Logically it doesnt add up though..... Subtract almost half of the screen and that equates to larger viewing area??? Maybe I missed that day in arithmetic...
