Video iPod from Apple next week?
So we already know that Apple has an announcment planned for next week (you can also try scrolling down a couple of posts), but the big question on everyone's minds is whether or not Apple is finally going to get around to introducing that video iPod we've been hearing rumors about for, well, about as long as there's been a non-video iPod. AppleInsider thinks it's a go, they're reporting that Apple has begun production of a video-capable iPod which could (emphasis on the "could") be unveiled as early as next week. Supposedly the device is slightly thinner than a 60GB iPod and has a small, nano-like click wheel and a large, high-res color display. We've gotten false alarms about this one before, but if it's not a video iPod, what else could merit such a massive media event?

Cool!!

Maybe it's a good thing that I've been putting off buying a Nano.
Jaxim @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Forget the video iPod! I'm waiting for a PSP with a harddrive, which was rumored here not so long ago!!
Mike @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I thought they weren't ever getting into Video Ipods! I bet there video device will complete the video PVP era started in 2003
The more Ipods the merrier! I get to fix more for my buissness http://www.cranburypcrepair.com

Finally. A reason to upgrade from my third gen.
Ionizer @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Maybe they are going to announce that they and google are going to start promoting each others products, and you get googlebar when you install itunes.
Adam @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
...it's...it's... THE PHONE !!!!!
Brad @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
AppleInsider also mentions the possible release of an "Airport Express AV." Personally, I find this a lot more compelling a video iPod, although it'd need some sort of remote even more than the audio-only Airport Express does.
Oh, and of course, none of this is very interesting without some sort of content. Let's hope that it's more than just music videos.
aaron @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Forget video ipods.
I want iNewton!

I'm telling you- Steve was up all last night finishing this amazing iMovie- it's got cute dogs, in... hats! With a wide-angle lens, you'll love it.
Samuel Lago @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I heard that IPod users can get music in the form of the video, which is excellent as so much time, skill and effort goes into making the music videos and they're only shown for a short period on MTV.
With the iPod video the music video could come back into fashion, also I heard that PDF type booklets of the real thing are available, I'd like to switch to that while listening to a track.
One other thing would be to have the lyrics pop-up so I can understand what the artist is saying, now that would be great!
mike @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
*Flame Bait..
Phew.. If it weren't for my favorite fruit company, this would be one quiet industry...
RBe @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I hope (and know its not true) they release the next iteration of the powerbook... x86!!!
They've had those sony engineers for like... 3 months, right? GET CRACKING!
Josh Glaser @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I'd sell my iPod nano for an iPod video...and that's saying something. (Actually, I'm only saying that because I know I'll eventually want a black 4GB nano over my white 2GB model, anyway...but for a short time, I would go nano-less for an iPod video!)
Seriously, though, I'd love it. And if Apple manages to update its computers (*cough* Powerbook) by the event, I'll have a very Apple-icious week, indeed.
Tulula @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Interesting, check out this link :
http://www.apple.com/movies
You get a 403 Page not Found forbidden error. Now type in some random garbage for apple.com, and you get a 404, with a list of popular apple site features.
Looks like something is there and hidden.

i'm wondering if the screens will come pre-scratched, since we've been waiting so long! :)
my moustache @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
nice catch, tulula.
video ipod would be cool, and i would definitely have one within the month (as long as battery life is comparable to my 30gig photo), but i'm really hoping for powerbooks.
please, steve...powerbooks for me?
also, from now on, being disappointed by apple's failing to make a rumored announcement at an event will be referred to as receiving a "steve job."
as in, "i waited six months to order my powerbook, but all i ended up with was a steve job."
Stu L Tissimus @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Nice find on the movies. Anyway, I for one am hoping for Newton 2. I seem to rememeber that Apple had a patent for a stylus-controlled tablet running OS X....
shinyhat @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I also think something from Airport/wireless is coming soon.. Perhaps we'll find WiFi in the iPod before we find video in it? Or in a miracle, both. However battery life will probably be shot with either feature.
Not so sure about the video iPod, but as long as it plays my library without re-encoding, I'm into it. I'd be happy with the iPod interfacing the PSP as a hard drive for movie playback. The memory stick, and ridiculous file naming makes the PSP a terd for movie playback.
dottormi @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
the AppleInsider article about video iPod is not accesible anymore, is it a sign ?
ItsAllVerbatim @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Dear tech gods (the ones that brought me EVDO, Treo's, EDGE enabled BlackBerrys and Sony VAIO's):
Please enable Jobs and Co to release this
I beg of you.
Let this be so. I have a 60GB HD full of Daily Show clips with no home :(
It's the new slogan:
"Give MPEG's a chance" :)
David @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Sounds credible; Same wheel as nano - the 4G iPod's wheel debuted on the iPod mini, Thinner than 60GB iPod - the nano is all about thinness.
I guess they didn't want to announce an iPod video last month and taking all the attention away from the iPod nano.
M_Mickey @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I will not pay extra for a crappy videoplayer on my exelent musicplayer.
El Payo @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I think Jobsie watched Scott McNealy bore the audience to death at the Sun/Google meetup and wants to show all the other CEOs in the valley 'How it's done.'
El Payo @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
By the way http://www.apple.com/music forwards you on to the iTunes page. maybe /movies will do the same soon, or on to an iMedia page?
Ken @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
When I was on a plane down to San Diego from San Jose few weeks ago, a guy from company-S (not Sony!) was sitting in front of me with a document opened on his PC. And I couldn't help peeping in because I saw the title of the doc go, "Apple LCD Project".
This company-S was offering 3.8 to 4.5" (equavalent size to PSP) Reflectable LCDs to Apple, clearly for portable usage = Video iPod!!!
(If it is not intentional, the guy at 'S', watch your back!!! You might get fired!!!)
Cheers,
Nolan D. @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I really hope they're announcing a video iPod. It would be so awesome, but if it's like $400 (cause it'll probablly be expensive) I won't be able to get it for Christmas... but I could always spend half a year saving up, lol. Even if I can't I can stare at pictures of it...
Hunter @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
What sort of formats do you think this will support? Will they stay Apple loyal and make it support MOVs?
shinatsu @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
This is the reason why I put off buying an apple ipod for so long...now I just have to wait until they come out with the ipod photo-video-GPS-cameraphone lol
Grady @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
ViPod. I like the sound of that. Maybe it'd have PDA-like functionality? Hell, maybe it's something similar to what OQO offers.
kim @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Cant you install some type of program to get video capabilities for regular photo ipods? or am I just totally off?
flubba @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
confirmed video ipod

Ken @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
>27.
I don't think the CPU power & the memory capacity on reg. iPod will be able to take video rendering... decoding compressed audio and rendering it is pretty easy. That's why Sony devices can realize 40-70h on one charge.
(In that sense, Apple is doing a poor job. Maybe because they are relying on OEMs and not designing a chipset on their own.)
Anthony @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Could someone give me some insite into what this screen shot I just took could be!? http://oxjox.com/images/ftpmovies.png
Eric @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Its so totally coming out. I would not be surprised if it is thicker than 60 gig though. Maybe the dock adapter that comes with nano is for fitting into accesories for an 80 gig video ipod (speaker, docks, ect.) It currently is not fitting into any ipod dock sooooooo....
Anthony @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
How about putting a lens on the front of the iPod, spin it 90 degrees and create a perfect blend of digital camera and video camera that will upload all your movies and pictures to you mac when you get home to dock it. And now that Apple would offer home movies in their iPod they could add some video output to the airport express to stream them and your pictures to your tv. One more thing, available in 60GB iPod form factor as well as 4GB iPod Nano form factor for possibly the worlds smallest point and shoot digital camera.

Nooooooooo, there can't be a video iPod! I just got a nano! How could you DO this to me, Apple? How?
Kendall @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
This would be huge...but I have got my hopes up before and apple keeps letting me down! I will cross my fingers though :)
tom @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Look for iHDTV or Airport Express with HDMI sending capabilities
I want to see the 42" IHDV
Tommy @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Has anyone else noticed that the curtain in the "One more thing..." press photo looks a LOT like the ones in a movie theater?
Rex StJames @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Tommy, I hadn't noticed that, but I certainly do see it now. Great catch!
What do the words "One more thing" mean? They did just release the iPod Nano. Think about that. Make the connection. Ooo, this IS exciting!
acidreflux @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
the screen will look like shit within a few weeks of use, so i could care less about the vPod (unless they fix that).
i dont think that apple will come out a with a tablet, if ever, until the transition to intel.

Tulula's comment is genius...well done.
Its interesting to note that it has been almost two months since apple has released a new music video on iTunes...
did apple give up on video? or do they want a big launch?
...I <3 Speculation
Kman @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Forget the ipod, Apple's support is non-existant. Ifyou have a complaint about he screen cracking, they will pretend you are the first one ever to call to report the problem. Apple's products are garbage!!!!@
