Samsung and Apple being investigated by Korean FTC for unfair trading practices?
We already knew that iRiver, Cowon, and other South Korean MP3 player makers
were crazy pissed at Samsung for giving Apple such a
sweet deal on NAND flash memory modules for the iPod
nano, but now it looks like the South Korean Fair Trade Commission might be investigating whether or not the two
companies engaged in "unfair trading practices". We're not overly familiar with the ins and outs of Korean trade law
(we slept through that class sophomore year of high school) and whether or not Samsung and/or Apple did anything
illegal, but we don't doubt that iRiver and the rest of 'em put a ton of pressure on the government to look into
this.
[Thanks, Ken C.]

Spare me your sales projections using the rear view mirror. The iPod nano will sell very very well in Korea, partly because it is cheaper than the Korean copies will ever be. It isn't Craig that's getting owned, it's iRiver.
Again talking with out any knowledge of the market that you are dealing with.
The numbers coming out of korea are shady at best. I know that people like to believe what comes out of companies at face value and also what comes from countries with the same amount of belief. But you cant believe everything that you see on the net. And Korea deals in its own special form of "truth".
So johnnyprozac when is the last time that you have been to korea? What do you know about the korean goverment and its inner workings? You havent been to korea? You havent studied korean law....hummm, but, you'll take somebodys words off the net at face value but they also havent lived here nor knows anything about korea? Intresting.
Not only that. All the sources in the artical are companies that are from korea. They have the notion that they are supposed to be on top and will say anything to make it so. Also the figures that are quoted in the artical are far, far, far off ones that are used by reputable news orignizations in korea. So sure take your have baked analysis and run with it. And I'll be sitting here in korea looking at engadget, waiting for the same gadgets and phones that all you are drooling over that are supposed to be out here, in korea, now. But, they always seem to slip their ship dates by 6-8 months. But oh well I guess you know better because it said on engadget that they are out. And they paper launched it; so I guess that means I can run out and get my hands on it, or something.
No craig, I do work here, and don't call me a babo....for having pointed out data which is not put forward by corporations but by independent entities. Heh...I see the EEtimes which is in part is sponsored by the IEEE is not reputable? As well as th IDG media service?
And exactly what reputable news sources are you talking about? Joongang, which is owned by Samsung? Dongah? heheh Yonhap? These are all owned (withthe exception of Yonhap)or mostly owned by corporations. Oh wait do you mean Korea Times? or the Korean Herald which routinely serve as essentially press release fronts for corporations instead of any real journalism or financial analysis?
Well then if not, what sources?
and I professed no opinion towards one thing or another so spare me your "jamigyopoe who's stupidly in love with Korea" spiel. I have worked here for awhile and don't need to "come over there and see how things are"...I would say that you yourself should.
I know...I live in the Mapo area and work in the Chongro area so I damn well do see how things are...but beyond that I also have to study the damn figures and raw data that comes through the wires, the net, AND markets themselves. So I don't rely only on one source or my so called "experience" to make any analysis....you need correlationsbetween multiple sources 바보....or is that too difficult for you to understand?
Instead of personal attacks...try replying with your so called reputable sources and the data eh? and stop trying the pro forma attacks, 참나....
Johnny...*silence*...*Bows as the master rips craig a new one* I worship at the alter of objective truth and of Logic; two ideas craig would be wise to read up on. FACTSEFACTSEFACTS...
as siad b4, pure pwnage : )
Hey, so you are Korean. Just like everybody thought...you have been seen as blindly defending anything to do with korea since you have been showing up on here, now we have a reason why. A non-korean would never ever use "참나" and you need to work on your manners young man. Using the low respect form to somebody on the internet that you dont know. Not too nice there...
Anyhow, All of your marketing data is coming from one source. Its all GfK Marketing Services Korea. So your so called "corralation of sources" boils down to rehashes of the same report and same news feed from a source with a vested intrest in korea and no other data from other sources is being used. I dont see how you can call the same data from 3 different news outlets a corralation.
All I'm saying about this whole thing is the numbers arent looking right (but hey I shouldnt question, sheep to the slaughter, big business knows best and all that jazz). Next time youre on the subway take a look at what people are listening to around you. Count all the apple headphones and then all the non apple ones. Keep doing that for a few days and you have a nice random sampling of the population. I have done it for hours now. We are looking at a random sampling of people and it is about in the 10% range. But I guess me going out and doing a random sampling isnt going to be good enough for you until I get a company name and shove my findings on the net.
"..but beyond that I also have to study the damn figures and raw data that comes through the wires, the net, AND markets themselves." Yeah well you know best. The figures, raw data, info and the net and the market figures are all put out by one source GfK MS. Must be a lot of correrlation between those many many sources.
And as for personal attacks. You are doing a good job at giving those out. But it is always fun to tell others to not do something and then turn around and do it yourself.
No heh I use personal attacks and DATA...*grin*.
And uh...I haven't really posted anything on engadget...mostly a slashdot poster..so again u go on with FUD...I haven't really ever defended anyone on anything here....I mean I don't even defend Linux and Open source on slashdot blindly...why the hell would I defend something based on something as silly as national grounds?
Furthermore if you do bother to keep track Gfk was the source for one to two articles..with data further correlated by yes ..the corporate LG Economic Research Institute..The raw data GfK was working with was further provided by Ministry of Commerce, Vectis International, and eMedia Asia. I should also mention that I work with feed coming in from the weekly statistical information fed to Danawa Corp (which aggregates vendor figures). So when you have no idea what goes into a market analysis.......that reports themselves are not coming in from one pure raw source..they often aggergate and filter raw data and other sources before it is released
And as any market analyst will tell you random sampling is only effective if there are a number variables in play...from economic brackets...to locations to frequency and temporal factors of the actual surveying.
Your random sampling..is well underwhelming.
