We know most of you are probably focusing on today's other
big announcement (or maybe today's other other
big announcement), but Palm did in fact unveil a pair of new handhelds today, the
Palm TX and
Palm Z22, and as usual, we've got a little
roundup of early reviews for ya. Not many so far, expect more to turn up over the next few weeks.

I want the Palm T|X. I already have a Tungsten T3, but I just wanted the TX because of the Wifi. I don't like that they drop the Tungsten name. For $300, it's a sweet deal.

The Z22 is reasonable as a paper organiser replacement I suppose.
The TX, however, is woefully underpowered and hobbled by a weak OS that was released over 3 years ago (and problematic even back then). Still, if you can't read the writing on the wall and want to persist with using the PalmOS, the TX is the new flagship model...

Hey that TX looks kinda...oh wait, I already own a PEG-TH55. For a year and a half now.
What's next, Palm?
fuz @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
the tx would be a nice update to the tungsten c i am on now, this just has 1 dead pixel and is a replacment for another bricked c i have, but its great i use it almost more than my aging thinkpad 600.
plus i love landscaping mode.

The z22 seems really intresting. The $99 price point seems perfect and for a color screen really seems too good to be true.
Now I know it doesnt have any flashy features, but I dont need another mp3 player or to go on the internet when Im grocery shopping.
Simply put Im looking for a basic PDA and up until now that has pretty much disappeared from the market. The only complain I have is I wish it came wit ha cradle for the computer. Maybe that accessory will come out in a few months, but I defintaly think I might pick this little baby up this weekend. How can you go wrong for $99?

Palm: Bringing you the power of yesterday, today!
I'm soooooo disappointed.

Poor Palm. They knew of Apple's event and went ahead and released THEIR white, electronic handheld. Those people at Palm (which could be anyone, they change every month) have no CLUE what they are doing.

#7: Yes, Palm released their white handheld, which ISN'T a competing product. Apple doesn't make PDAs (ahh, whither Newton?), Palm doesn't make exclusive media players. The worst one could say is that Palm's trying to emulate the i-whatever aesthetic. Given how well it apparently sells, can't fault Palm for that. Don't care for the look myself, but not a horrible business decision -- just maybe a slightly transparent one.

I have always been a palm fan, since the Palm Personal. I've had the Palm Personal, the Vx, the Tungsten T, and the LifeDrive(for 2 hours).
I bought a TX last night at best buy, and its a decent device but I am returning it tonight.
I wish it had the feel of the Vx, rock solid. Instead, its kinda creaky plastic. if you give it a squeeze, the plastic makes noise.
Plus, it kept dropping the wifi signal (while I was sitting right next to the AP).

wish TX had better battery life

["The z22 seems really intresting. The $99 price point seems perfect and for a color screen really seems too good to be true."]
Not really. The screen is small, low resolution, and passive-matrix (STN). It displays 4,096 colors (others display 65,535). Viewing detailed pictures on this (tested with the Zire 31, which has exactly the same screen) does not work well. It becomes a slight annoyance after a while of everything fading in and out on the STN screen.
It's an attractive price good for budget users, but not too good to be true.

The Z22 is wicked! I got mine friday and played with it all weekend and love it. You cannot get a similar handheld for that price. The screen is fine. No it's not HD, but that's 'cause it's only $99 -- what do you expect epp_b??
The software installed without incident (which is rare on a mac) and I have it syncing with iCal and OSX's Address Book flawlessly. Love the app that sync's the photo's as well 'cause it's just so simple and takes little time to use. The feature that most impressed the friends I've shown it to is the slideshow features in the 'Photos' app. It's a hell of a lot better than showing someone pics on your phone.
It's just meant to be a paper organizer replacement and it does that and more. I love the styling of it too. I love that it looks like an iPod. The back is dark, translucent blue plastic and it feels really solid and the buttons feel great and give enough feedback when you use them. I think it's going to do really well.

"The software installed without incident (which is rare on a mac)"
Meant the Palm Desktop software. It actually installs now. Only took them trying since 10.2 to get it right.

Any chance of a longer lasting third party battery becoming available for the TX ? It is the only drawback I can find...
